CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: How much gas we could save in EU if we reduce our heating temp by 3°?
This actually great advice. There's always been the idea that we should heat people, not places. With improvements to battery technology I'm going to have to investigate heated clothing. Any recommendations?
CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: How much gas we could save in EU if we reduce our heating temp by 3°?
I've not researched this - only read reports on the MSM - that installing an electric heat pump in the UK is thousands of pounds.

If that's true then it's completely unrealistic for heat pumps to become mainstream anytime soon.

We need to find alternative sources of natural gas, fast. Fracking may be a good choice at this point in time.

How do you live without a fridge?

Where do you put all your cheese? :)

You wear IFF coloured bands. From photos I've seen the Ukrainians are using yellow arm bands, and Russians white leg bands.
CodeGlitch··on Stop Putin, Block Russia from Swift
Russia is playing a game of chess. They have several moves ahead mapped out and an overall strategy.

The West came to the game thinking it was tic tac toe...

I don't think blocking swift will achieve the expected result, Putin will have a move against this.

CodeGlitch··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Yes I can. A "modern military" isn't a guaranteed victory if your enemy is fighting in it's own turf in difficult terrain. The best armies in the world have failed to do this in Afghanistan (several times now).
CodeGlitch··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Also agree. It's also an alliance mostly built on trade and laws, with some intelligence thrown in if the parties feel like it. The EU has stayed away from military allegiance.

I believe Finland has a compulsory conscription system for all males over 18:

https://puolustusvoimat.fi/en/finnish-conscription-system

Therefore I do not think Finland would be a walk-over for the Russians...not to mention what happened last time Russia fought Finland:

CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: GDPR pop-ups are getting so annying, what should we do about it?
That's just for rendering though isn't it? Brave are free (and do) add any features they like on top of that.

So I only linked to that BBC article to give some context... As you say it has nothing to do with Twitter, because as I said it's hard to give examples of people being blocked on Twitter for having perfectly reasonable and mainstream views.
CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: Can we ban Twitter links, please?
Yeah the browser plugin route looks like the best solution for now. Cheers.

Plus gaining territory = more access to raw materials and labor. Perhaps that's Putin's plan?

CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: Can we ban Twitter links, please?
Thanks, but dang could do a search and replace if that ever occurred?
CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: Can we ban Twitter links, please?
Perhaps HN could automatically convert Twitter links into nitter.net?

You're right in that comparing modern antifa against 1940s Nazis, but I was comparing the modern incarnations of both (which wasn't clear in my post). As had been mentioned, the actions of both groups in current times is what I meant.

You've actually brought up a good point, with the overuse of the term "Nazi" it's hard to have a meaningful conversation about the far right and their deeply unpleasant beliefs. Simply calling them Nazis is lazy and unhelpful.

By being open source = democratising

Bad actors start using ai to do bad things. Good actors use ai to counter bad actors.

Or is that not what you meant?

Perhaps will see the equivalent of the Twitter "blue tick" for stuff posted to YouTube?

Anything related to the trans row will get you banned from Twitter. Obviously it's quite hard to give examples, as you know there not in Twitter anymore.

This lady is quite famous in the UK and is banned from Twitter for her not so extreme views:

Fortunately I think the age of social media might come to an end soon. When ai is strong enough to pass as a human (online) what's to stop the majority of accounts being ai-controlled by bad actors? We're already seeing the start of this and it's only going to get worse. This will force the social media companies to place very heavy restrictions on accounts. Twitter for example requires a user to have a valid phone number, but there are ways around this. More and more of their energy well be in combating these bad actors, placing a large financial burden on running the business.
CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: What was better in the past in tech?
> Programming nowadays feels more like an exercise in importing other people's code correctly. I feel like it's mostly writing something that takes data format X, converts it to format Y for library Z and then 'just works'[sic]. The 'heavy lifting' is usually not happening in your code, but in one of the libraries/full-on programs being pulled in, and your code just happens to be calling it with the right parameters.

AKA "plumbing". Yes I agree this is pretty much all I've been doing the last few years.

> This isn't all bad, in that it allows ideas to be tested and products to be created in a testable (and sometimes even shippable) form in a ridiculously fast amount of time, but then you're also far more prone to discover some library in your stack had a breaking change a few versions ago and you suddenly don't know when your upgrade will be delivered because you don't know if it's just a 'legacy=true' parameter that needs to be passed in or they redid their core somehow.

I know it's a buzzword but it shows how important DevOps is in modern development. It's something I need to spend more time on...

> and the majority don't want these Nazi flag waving idiots distrupting their lives.

Slightly off topic but the inconsistent treatment/reporting of these protestors and BLM is what gets me. BLM protestors flying "antifa" flags (let's be honest Marxists) are just as bad as Nazis in my book - seriously misled people with unworkable ideas about how the world should be run.

Anyway if you're coming down hard on protestors who are causing disruption but not to protestors who are setting fire to buildings then there's something seriously wrong.

CodeGlitch··on Marxism vs. Liberalism: An Interview Between J.V. Stalin and H.G. Wells (1934)
Yes this is why anything to do with ai should be open source. It can be too powerful in the hands of bad actors.

> What sort of basic checks should one perform after provisioning a server or making a service available?

Automate everything, as in the provisions. Even if it's a one-shot job. This way if something does go wrong you can go look back at the script and it will give you an idea of where things went wrong (misconfiguration, etc).

Yes my bad. I read an article about it the other day but linked to the wrong one.
CodeGlitch··on Ask HN: How Is Your Neck?
Pull-ups. If you work from home you can get bars that attach to doorways.

If you've never done pull-ups before, you won't manage to actually pull yourself up. However you can "hang" which stretches out the shoulder and kneck muscles.

Once I managed to do a number of pull-ups, all my kneck and shoulders pain vanished.

> Also, the global oil and gas prices will increase,

It did cross my mind that perhaps we might start to see energy rationing, something that was used in the UK not too long ago.
