CoffeePython··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
Huge FastAPI fan here.

I use it for my projects (and one project even makes enough revenue that I sponsor Sebastián’s work through GitHub sponsors at $250/mo) and it for sure has increased my development velocity.

It’s an absolute joy to work with. The automated interactive docs are great for iteration. Type hints as first class citizens is an awesome developer experience that I didn’t think I wanted.

Using the auto generated OpenAPI you can even generate client side code and typings to interact with your API.

It feels like flask but with lots of quality of life improvements.

CoffeePython··on Show HN: Retrospective on having my “Show HN” on the front-page
The next thing I'm working on is a platform[1] that lets other developers create and sell interactive programming courses. At launch it'll have python and JS support. I'd like to add support to allow the ability to teach things like git or shell commands at some point too.

CoffeePython··on Show HN: Retrospective on having my “Show HN” on the front-page
This was so cool to read! I had a similar experience with my product[1] hitting the front page last week.

The high level stats for mine were that it sent 18k visitors to my site and generated $1815 the first day it was up.

The following day had 5.8k visitors and generated $1100 of sales.

The coolest part was getting connected with interesting people from cool companies. Got connected with a YC founder, a few folks at big engineering companies, and some fellow indie hackers.

It’s kind of nerve wracking posting a Show HN, but the benefits were great for me. Most of the comments were positive. Got some super valuable feedback as well that will help improve the product.

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
It was just a good domain name that was available and I bought it lol. Not sure why the trend exists.
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Hey, I just saw this. Please email me. Email is firstnamelastname@gmail.com

I’m Kenneth Cassel. I think the confirmation should have gone to whatever email you use for google.

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
I don’t agree with the viewpoint but the revenue here has helped me sponsor one of my favorite open source projects FastAPI at $250/mo.

There’s value in providing teaching on something that is free. I’ve bought learning tools/apps for many different programming related topics and loved the value they provided.

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
There’s been decent demand for some more advanced lessons. I’m considering adding more. Anyone who has bought already would get the additional lessons for free
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
I worked on this for 3 days. I've been getting around 1k on average visitors from direct traffic and twitter since I launched it into access around 10 days ago.

I'm going to work on SEO next for it :)

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Yes it does, all the exercises past the basic navigation one are real life use cases for how it can be used.

I need to add some better copy and examples on the landing page so people will know what they're getting.

Here's a video on twitter that demonstrates one of the exercises https://twitter.com/KennethCassel/status/1351178904686514178...

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
There are 10 exercises and 1 video that shows how I use vim in my normal development workflow.

The lessons are:

- Basic Navigation

- Command Basics

- Insertion

- Append

- Deletion

- Word Level Navigation

- Select Mode

- Advanced Word Level Navigation

- Yanking/Putting

- Matching within tags {} () "

Yep I’d definitely recommend the same, vimtutor is great.
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
I guess it does! Haven’t seen anyone do this before. I’ll look into fixing this though!
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Oh strange, I haven’t had anyone report this bug yet. I’ll look into it. Thank you for letting me know!
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Wow thanks! Learning vim is fun :) I’m glad to see so many people interested in it
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Oh this is neat! I haven’t seen this one around before :) I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing
CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Awesome, glad you got it working :)

I use vim inside of vs code and it’s been awesome for my workflow.

vimtutor is a fantastic resource and I’d definitely recommend using it for anyone interested in learning vim.

vim.so gives you more interactive exercises and helps to show you real life examples of where and how vim would be useful.

Thanks for checking it out!

CoffeePython··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
Hey y'all!

I built this interactive course after a year of learning vim and finding it to be extremely useful in my day to day development experience.

The course is designed to give you lots of interactive practice so you can develop the muscle memory needed to effectively use vim.

Would love to hear what you guys think about it :)

CoffeePython··on Show HN: Divjoy 2.0 – Build a SaaS app in minutes
This looks awesome Gabe. Is there somewhere we can see a roadmap of future improvements/features?

I'm currently building things with React, tailwind, FastAPI, and hosting on Render.

I'm thinking of buying it just to explore and use the codebase as an example of what best practices to use. (Seeing as the CTO of Stripe even mentioned the code quality on your testimonials haha)

CoffeePython··on Spotify’s big bet on podcasts is failing, Citi says
I just never go to Spotify to listen to podcasts. Spotify is for music is the mental model o have.

I listen to podcasts with the Apple podcasts app.

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: Part-time jobs to fund my startup?
Honestly the best ROI for part time work would probably be specialized high paid freelancing gigs.

I was able to get freelance gigs on upwork for $85/hr as a relatively inexperienced developer a few years back.

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: What are your favourite productivity tools?
My general tips are to introduce it gradually into your workflow over time, and to practice with it daily.

The best way to do this is to use vim in whatever editor you currently use.

I use vim inside of VS code. I started by adding the basics, HJKL navigation.

When I would notice that I would do a certain kind of editing often, I’d look up the vim command to do it faster. For example, I noticed I often needed to replace all text within {}. So I looked up how to do that, ci{ and made an effort to use it everytime going forward.

I built https://vim.so with that in mind. It’s a place where you can practice the commands which I’ve found are the most helpful when programming.

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: What are your favourite productivity tools?
Vim has been an absolute game changer for me. It's like learning ctrl+c , ctrl+v but x100. I use it in VS code, so I don't have to leave all my other favorite extensions.

FastAPI[2] for fast backend API creation. It has auto-generated, interactive docs which is nice and negates having to use postman to test endpoints. You can auto generate your client code for calling your API as well as client side types based on your API.

TailwindUI[3] for insanely fast front-end development work that looks good.

Render[4] makes it incredibly easy to do automated deployment and hosting with SSL for your web apps. It's an huge productivity boost over using AWS for indie development.

Disclaimer: I make a vim learning tool[1].

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
Yeah it's relatively common for companies to restrict and even claim any individual IP as their own.

Definitely double/triple check your employment contracts

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: What is the right way to test your product idea while having a day job?
I have a day job and just launched https://www.vim.so into early access. (Over 30 customers so far)

My day job is at a boutique consulting company that explicitly allows side projects in our employment contract. The founders are very pro-entrepreneurship with employees and encourage us to find and work on side projects.

My schedule is usually something like:

4am/5am-8am Side project work 8am-4pm Day job work

I usually take one of the weekend days off. The other one I may work an hour or two before my family is awake.

It helps a ton if your employer allows it. Seems like it might be hard to come by employers who do this though.

CoffeePython··on Attention Is My Most Valuable Asset for Productivity as a Software Developer
I’m a fellow musician and also obsessed with the idea of how music and specifically, deliberate practice, play into programming.

It’s a super power. I’ve also noticed musicians are usually terrific coders.

A big part of being a great musician is years of learning HOW to practice. Glad to see others interested in the space.

CoffeePython··on Launch HN: Cohere (YC S20) – Real-time user support for web apps
I didn't find the demo very easily but here it is for others[1].

Pretty amazing demo

CoffeePython··on Launch HN: Cohere (YC S20) – Real-time user support for web apps
Nice idea! I think this would be very useful for myself and other indiehacker types.

Is there a video of a demo of the product anywhere?

Also is there audio involved as well? How do you communicate when you're in a session with the user?

CoffeePython··on Stripe Climate
This is pretty awesome! How does pricing work for this?
CoffeePython··on Show HN: Online Activities for Remote Teams
Are these live events? I think they are from what I can tell on the site. I'd try to make that more clear.

I think a lot of teams would be really interested in this. You can only play so many games of Among Us as a team before it gets old.

CoffeePython··on Ask HN: What do you do as Team Building while on remote?
We have daily coffee chat optional sessions right after standup.

So far it’s been working pretty great. Most days we have at least 4 or 5 folks stay. We talk about anything (but try not to talk about work)

We also occasionally play Among Us as a team. I’m not a gamer at all but have really enjoyed playing a social game together.
