CompuHacker··on Apple announces first states to adopt driver’s licenses and IDs in Apple Wallet
There is a distinction between

- having a valid drivers license document during a police encounter

- having a malicious device making (maybe) license related claims on your behalf during a police encounter

edit: More specifically, and more to your point, there is a distinction between being licensed and being able to produce proof of licensing.

CompuHacker··on Apple announces first states to adopt driver’s licenses and IDs in Apple Wallet
So far as I know, Apple can change arbitrary bits in the memory and file system of any online device they make. So, they can turn it off, change files, change the functioning of processes and apps, including removing any particular app. They can cause an iPhone to not display an image of or transmit the details of a drivers license, even if one is stored in the device, despite the effort of the user.

But the status of being licensed to drive is kept in one or several databases controlled by one or many states or agencies. Similarly, the status of having a credit card is kept in a database controlled by at least one credit card company. Licenses and payment accounts can be verified for everyday use with less than 100bits even without a physical or digital representation of the card face available.

If Apple can stop a device from transmitting or displaying license details, then I guess you'll... need either a physical copy or the license number.

CompuHacker··on NSA Mobile Device Best Practices
If every NSA employee has a perfect security posture, any adversary is going to have to take more extreme measures to get information. Better to let them have the occasional un-updated iPhone.
CompuHacker··on Starlink Satellite Data Centers
A petabyte of flash memory consumes several hundred watts and is susceptible to damage from particle radiation. A cube shape allows compounding damage.

Perhaps several Starships could be put in a medium Earth orbit, filled (or refilled over several missions) with a liquid for radiation shielding. The shape of the data storage array is decided such that one linear event cannot strike all of three redundant devices.

Windows 10 is in fact doing something when you click the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar. That's the moment it chooses to actually poll for networks. This ties up your Wi-Fi card and dramatically increases ping for about two seconds, in short pulses.

I'm not sure this disease metaphor is appropriate. Lots of people have STDs, and lots of those people get married, and, as I understand it, many of those people have a lot of safe sex.

And frankly, I don't trust many of my own devices not to fuck me. (figuratively speaking)

CompuHacker··on Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results
Are you suggesting that Google would censor Google Search search results relating to Google's censorship of Google Search search results? If so, could you provide a source?

A quick search I imagined doing (I even imagined that I used a VPN) turned up 10,000,000 results, 49 of which were news articles from the last 15 years detailing what, but not how, Google Search search results were censored. When I imagined clicking "Next" to see the rest of these results, I imagined that I was presented with a No CAPTCHA, asking me to identify which colored block of visual noise most closely resembled hell itself.

Edit: Oh, and then I did the search for real, and got 4.95m results of similar composition.

CompuHacker··on Change your MAC address with a shell script (2019)
I chose Silicon Graphics (08:00:69) and it's fascinating to see that anyone else did, for any reason. For reference, my ISP hands out 2-8 IPv4 addresses, expiry indefinite (unless I power down), to clients connected to the cable modem. So my stack looks like

[Motorola Surfboard]->[4p 1GbE Switch]->[Linksys E3000 (08:00:69::)]

Depending on the mood of the ISP, I can have several other networks running from the 4-port switch. If I spoof those MACs repeatedly, I can get an arbitrary (within range) block of public IPs, and there's some seriously weird behavior in allocating those IPs (change my MAC 48 times in a row, end up on the same IP I had just lost from a power outage?)
