CompuHacker··on IPFS, The Interplanetary File System, Simply Explained
In the process of researching and writing a one-line quip about FTP and Gopher, I found that Google Chrome will tell you not to enter credit card details or sensitive information over the insecure connection... to an FTP server.

That being said, FTP though.

CompuHacker··on Google wants to get rid of URLs but doesn’t know what to use instead
Chrome and Firefox developers have been actively pushing the trimURLs concept for years and will actually fight you about it, claiming that users won't care or understand.

Misrepresentation of URLs by default is becoming increasingly common. The URL doesn't have to fit in the box on every device, and if I don't know what resource I requested and how I can't troubleshoot my problems.

CompuHacker··on GlobalEntry.gov has invalid SSL certificate
Some National Guard sites seem to have a similar problem lately.
CompuHacker··on Disable SMT/Hyperthreading in all Intel BIOSes
With two $5k cars, you can guarantee safety by having a leader car clear the road while you follow at very low speed.

Is there a hyperthreading joke here somewhere?

CompuHacker··on How air-conditioning created the modern city
"Energy management" can replace "Shelter", especially with climate change and space exploration.

It is necessary to move heat around to get useful work done. More people will have to become familiar with this idea personally to maintain their way of life.

CompuHacker··on Traveling to the Sun: Why Won’t Parker Solar Probe Melt?
One of the outer solar system probes had a radio that had enough built in logic to accept software updates and maneuvering commands independently of the two redundant on-board science computers.

Lights-out management indeed.

CompuHacker··on Hottest Rain on Record: Rain Falls at 119°F in Imperial, California
Fahrenheit and Celsius have a thing where one degree in Celsius equals about two degrees in Fahrenheit. I think your car computer prefers Fahrenheit and misrepresents the exact values.
CompuHacker··on Computer Virus Cripples Several Taiwan Semiconductor Plants
Looks like XP Embedded.
CompuHacker··on Sending Cat Pictures Over The Phone (2015)
Robot36 and SSTV Encoder are simple, ad-free, free (Apache License) Android apps for decoding and encoding SSTV with a complementary and extensive mode-set.

That said, Dial-A-Cat is a bit blurry due to Martin 2's short transmission time and the cellular connection. There might also be a frequency shift preventing header detection in Robot36.

CompuHacker··on Unclaimed Baggage Center: The Shop for Lost Luggage (2015)
Equipment there occasionally have phone numbers and other identifying marks in non-obvious spots. Multimeters have traceable calibration certificates and flash drives and laptops are wiped by hand by something called "Operations", a separate part of the business. They are incapable of handling SAS drives, and they are sold unwiped. Don't worry about that.
CompuHacker··on YouTube and Reddit roll out new restrictions including channel and sub bans
Not to offer a complete solution: Lasers, and pervasive societal warnings about the danger of lasers.
CompuHacker··on Nanowire arrays restore vision in blind mice
Squint and you'll find that vision is heavily reliant on contrast between light and dark rather than color fields.
CompuHacker··on Smartphone sales fall for the first time, says Gartner
Any apps you have shouldn't rely on access to the Internet; they should make use of the hardware and resources you have. Remote into a "real computer" to do the important things.
CompuHacker··on Winter Olympics was hit by cyber-attack
Having not read the article and based on your comment alone: Could there have been a successful or in-progress content/data breach that was mitigated by pulling the plug entirely?
CompuHacker··on Firefox bullshit removal
I added an exception and read the page I received. A single author describes changes he made to his Firefox options from 29 onward. There is no plural "they", and, to my understanding, the information is not current.

Should this information become inaccessible because certs weren't paid for?

CompuHacker··on FCC won’t delay vote, says net neutrality supporters are “desperate”
<speculation> Use an educational or national institution for an Internet connection, bypassing commercial networks.
CompuHacker··on After 37 years, Voyager has fired up its trajectory thrusters
If it's anything like my old Chevy Nova, it'll light up the night sky.
CompuHacker··on “We have obtained fully functional JTAG for Intel CSME via USB DCI”
It's likely an internal microphone and speaker; the sound card may not support input through that interface. What you're saying can be true for many other modern computers, though.
CompuHacker··on Ex-NSA hacker drops macOS High Sierra zero-day hours before launch
Encrypt your credentials at rest and aggressively purge them from memory when any are decrypted.
CompuHacker··on The endgame for cameras is having no camera at all
Not enough people are photographing every flat surface they can see to get texture details, much less publishing the results or the compositions and designs of their expensive buildings.
CompuHacker··on Man jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives loses appeal
Improbable.
CompuHacker··on [dead]
I concur.
CompuHacker··on [dead]
This article mentions a breach in TeamViewer's security, but references an article stating that no breach exists.

It also meanders about, over-describing the history of networking and giving short, vague lines about AI powered workstation troubleshooting.

CompuHacker··on Show HN: TCP over sound on Android
Vacuum-gapped computers, anyone?
CompuHacker··on The Cuban CDN
Cubans would benefit from infrastructure in Cuba.
CompuHacker··on Hewlett Packard Enterprise to buy SGI
I'd like to see a new PC with the SGI name on it, or maybe a laptop. And a 4k successor to the 1600SW LCD display.

... I'd settle for a mousepad, though. Or maybe a mug.

CompuHacker··on Should All Research Papers Be Free?
It's better than nothing.
CompuHacker··on Court says aquitted man must tell police if he is going to have sex
"Any female." "Any phone."

Something's wrong with this.

CompuHacker··on Doomsday planning for less crazy folk
BaoFeng UV-5R and its newer variants.
CompuHacker··on Microwave Ovens Posing as Astronomical Objects
No, it's full power, for the full duration that it takes for the door to swing from fully closed to engaging the switch that kills the microwave.

But exposure to a fraction of a second of microwaves is not dangerous, to the best of my knowledge. It just annoys astronomers and keeps microwave designers up at night.
