DoingIsLearning··on Gene therapy allows an 11-year-old boy to hear
Question for the Bio people, from what I've seen gene therapies so far target very narrow scope sometimes rare diseases. Is there any 'broad spectrum' type gene therapy currently in the pipeline of any company out there? (not specific to audiology)

And is the narrow scope because it is easy to control in these early days or is that we simple don't know enough to make more complex gene therapeutics without understanding collateral damage, side-effects, for example?

Is 700k the manufacturing cost or a retail price? I thought they were close to 2M on the higher res end.

DoingIsLearning··on Electric cars suffer 'unsustainable' depreciation in secondhand market
I think the business model will have to change for this barrier to disappear.

Most likely in the future you will buy or lease the car. But you will never buy the battery only lease it.

When the battery is fubar the manufacturer will recycle or resell for utility storage and replaces your battery pack.

Much like Auto companies went into Financing business to boost sales they will likely go into Battery management businesses to boost sales.

I can't see another way for long term.

DoingIsLearning··on TinyML: Ultra-low power machine learning
Just emailed you. Thank you.
DoingIsLearning··on The failure of self-checkout technology
Yeah the Decathlon ones really bamboozled me.

Does anyone know how are those achieved (from a technical standpoint)?

DoingIsLearning··on TinyML: Ultra-low power machine learning
Ok since we are at it, in your opinion:

Is it feasible for someone with a SWE background with fair amount of industry years to transition into ML without a deep dive into a PhD and publications to show?

I am considering following the fastAI course or perhaps other MOOC courses but I am not sure if any of this would be reasonably taken seriously within the field?

DoingIsLearning··on PIDs: Creating Stable Control in Games
For every PID write up that reviews the theory we need an equally length follow up on the practical aspects of PID tuning and problem modelling.
DoingIsLearning··on ALOHA robot learns from humans to cook, clean, do laundry
I am pretty sure I've seen videos of commercial robots power washing public bathrooms. Probably not a solution for normal bathrooms with wood furniture and fabric items but it is definitely possible today.
DoingIsLearning··on ALOHA robot learns from humans to cook, clean, do laundry
Perhaps I am not updated with the times but last I checked combo machines have no proper lint filters and are a lot more messy in terms of end result dust/fibers.
DoingIsLearning··on ALOHA robot learns from humans to cook, clean, do laundry
Slightly off topic, is there an open source robot today that could transfer clothes from a washing machine (Front loading) to a dryer autonomously?
DoingIsLearning··on TinyML: Ultra-low power machine learning
As someone not in ML but curious about the field this is really interesting. Intuitively indeed it would be natural to aim for some sort of inspectable composition of models.

Is there specific tooling to inspect intermediate layers or will they be unintelligible for humans?

DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" came to mind from your description, very interesting.
DoingIsLearning··on The US grid battery fleet is about to double – again
BYD, Hitachi, Siemens (energy).
DoingIsLearning··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
Thanks. Off-topic I naively assumed from general news that BYD was just in the auto business. Interesting to see all the sectors they are in.
DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: Who else is working on nothing?
> It was a time were ecclesiastes from the Bible resonated a lot.

As an open minded agnostic who has not read the Bible or the Tanakh I am curious, what about the Ecclesiastes in particular resonated with you?

DoingIsLearning··on ‘This Has Been Going on for Years’: Boeing’s Manufacturing Mess
Boeing's (aeronautic business) end-users are millions of passengers, Lockheed Martin's end-users are Defense and Intelligence. No need for damage control if mum's the word.
DoingIsLearning··on Remote Workers Are Losing Out on Promotions
Off-topic, is archive.org no longer able to scrape these subscription articles?

Seems a considerable loss considering they sometimes change and retract articles. With no other result cached, it seems harder to keep newspapers accountable.

DoingIsLearning··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
In this project they are using "158 Tesla Megapacks". Is there any utility level battery storage (commercially available) that is not using Lithium?

I remember a while back a stream of projects using molten metals to create (less energy dense but more affordable) batteries for utility scale. Has anything like that come to life?

DoingIsLearning··on A battery has replaced Hawaii's last coal plant
> increased Wind power

It will depend on what kind of storm are we talking. Depending on wind speed, wind turbines may need to lock their gearboxes to avoid falling apart.

But arguably yes, increased wind power before and after a large storm perhaps.

DoingIsLearning··on Bottled water has 'up to 100 times' more bits of plastic than previously feared
> the most commonly detected plastic was polyamide, a material commonly used in water filtration systems and "the most popular membrane material used in reverse osmosis … a common water purification method shared by all three brands [of water tested]

Is this inevitable with a polyamide membrane RO system or is this wear and tear with insuficient maintenance/ part replacement?

DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: How many of you are consciously downsizing your devices/going retro?
Slightly off topic questions: - You are running Debian 12 on an Android tablet? - Can you specify the tablet specs and what sort of battery life you get out of it?
DoingIsLearning··on Lancet journal retracts article on hearing aids and dementia after prodding
Yes it is true.

But Jennifer Ann McCarthy and Oprah Winfrey were a lot more pivotal in starting this problem with real and avoidable children deaths more so than a fraudulent RCT from a now unlicensed charlatan.

I believe it is important to remember people's contribution to problems and where they sat on which side of history.

DoingIsLearning··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
That's not realistic. Not always possible depending on routes.
DoingIsLearning··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
Question to the Airline people on HN:

I recall that following the 2019 deaths that Boeing was going to rebrand the Max with some number series or similar, so that passengers didn't get nervous flying in it.

How do I as a passenger identified all the rebranding permutations of the Max so that I make sure my family is not flying in them?

DoingIsLearning··on Zeiss's "Holocam" turns glass windows into cameras
Yes I interpret it as guiding light inside the glass such that the sensor is on the lateral aspect of the glass embedded in a glass frame perpendicular to the target image.

Sounds like they embedded a light splitter with some sort of periscope style lense inside a glass pane.

So not actually bolted oblique to the glass as GP suggested.

DoingIsLearning··on American cars are huge and unsafe, but automakers don't want the simple solution
Indeed yes, the ones that started the trend of oversizing pickup trucks and have the best selling models in US for the past 20 odd years.
DoingIsLearning··on American cars are huge and unsafe, but automakers don't want the simple solution
You might want to read up on Clotaire Rapaile, who is the de facto father of the modern SUV and record margins per vehicle for american auto brands.

One could argue quackery but this is C-level paying millions in consultancy fees quackery.

"Rapaille no longer sees patients. He doesn't need to, because he's paid well to supply his insights to corporate America - and lives in baronial splendor outside of New York City.

Apart from Ford, GM and Chrysler, he's advised companies like Kelloggs, Kraft, and Proctor & Gamble. They pay him to get inside the deepest recesses of our brains. In fact, he's known as the "car shrink" in Detroit." [0]

"The notion of need is very, very interesting. Because what do we really need, you see? I need food, I need water. I need shelter," says Rapaille. "And you know that, but then there are other needs, needs of identity. Needs of communication. Needs of being loved, being respected."[0]

"Why do you buy a car that doesn't even make 10 miles per gallon, doesn't fit into your garage? Do you really need that? And you don't need that intellectually," he says. "But at [...] the deepest part of you, the gut level if you want, you feel like you need that."[0]

"I don't believe what people say. They have a good alibi. They have a way to explain things to make them feel comfortable about what they're to do anyways," says Rapaille, who believes it's now considered hip to appear ready to take on anything.[0]

DoingIsLearning··on 40% of US electricity is now emissions-free
Indeed "Wet-bulb temperature" is likely to be the thing that will make several densely populated places in Asia uninhabitable.

Bangladesh alone is +170M people. Dispacing these people will be a refugee crisis on an unseen scale.

DoingIsLearning··on American cars are huge and unsafe, but automakers don't want the simple solution
No, you have been socially conditioned through media that they are not aspirational and they do not transmit power and prestige.

If you are the man you must buy NewAuto TM, you wouldn't want to look weak.
