Perfect branding lies in the sweet spot between unique and recognizable (or self-explanatory for domains, see my post on this http://t.co/ecbsWcp), but it depends on mindshare.
"GMail" is in the sweet spot between the faceless title "Google Mail" and the unrecognisable "Jabberwocky". YouTube won the mindshare landrush for consumer video and became a household brand name. Rebranding it would be dumb.
Picasa, on the other hand, is similar to "Google Reader" in that it solves a smaller problem in a highly crowded market. Smaller brands with multiple competitors strengthen the core "Google" brand by living under the umbrella as "GPhoto", "Google Brush" or "Google Reader", for example.
Would like to hear counter-points.
That aside, any blogger that tries to convey their opinion by starting with "Don't get me wrong," should be dragged online and shot. But not before asking about the appropriate type of buckshot on the Guns SE.
Before that I was using LINQ-to-SQL with a repository layer and StructureMap, but I spent way too much time writing repository methods and mapping columns manually. Do yourself a favour and try NHibernate without the XML mappings.
My best antidote: have your IDE ready to work and close all your browser tabs at once.
P.S. You know you read too much Hacker News when you wake up from a dream in which PG rejected both your startup ideas for funding.
However, if you feel the potential to gain traction outweighs the threat of losing an edge (or a paying customer, since they can just use your code), open-source the engine, but hold back on the parts that are unique to your offering and/or make your engine easy to work with (like a GUI, simplified wrappers or builds for different platforms), though this depends on the nature of your product.
