GenericDev··on Indie Game Dev: Assessing Risk
I've played a lot of Spelunky. I mean, I have played A LOT of Spelunky. I consider Derek Yu to be a great designer.

I also think Spelunky classic was the best version of his series on account that the aesthetics and soundtrack were so banger.

That's why I wanted to preface everything before I made this statement. Spelunky 2 is one of the "worst" games I have ever played. I mean this in a very nice way. However, I consider it incredibly disrespectful to the players.

In order to see the "true" ending of the game you have to do an insane number of really esoteric tasks to get to what is called The Cosmic ocean. And, in this Cosmic ocean you then spend 99 levels working in what is arguably arbitrary hell to complete it so that you can finally "beat" game.

https://youtu.be/UbTW3F2F4PI

What I find so disrespectful about Spelunky 2 is that the experience is frustrating as hell. And, that's intentional. He has designed the game in order to elicit that response, but that doesn't mean that's necessarily a good thing

And in one of his axes he lists broad appeal, however there is no way any person in the general population can even remotely approach the skill level required in order to enjoy this aspect of the game. And, some people might say "get good", or "you need to learn to play the game", but I don't find that to be a sufficient explanation or sympathetic response to those who really do enjoy the game, but are locked out of really interesting parts of it based on tedium that requires incredibly long playthroughs that require incredibly difficult tasks to be achieved in order to see it.

And, I get it as a designer he made the choice that this is how the game should be played, but I cannot really ever get over how the game has changed between Spelunky classic versus Spelunky 1 versus Spelunky 2. And, how much he made a point to enforce that experience through design decisions.

I'd also like to touch on the fact that each following iteration changed from interesting to an art style that felt more like McDonald's art instead of sticking close and cute like the original Sprite art that was created.

I have put so many hours into Spelunky and it's crazy because I would expect to have nice things to say about a game that I spent so much time playing, but for me I really wouldn't suggest Spelunky to anyone because of the design decisions from Derek Yu. In fact, it's my top choice for games that get in the way of themself to the detriment of the player.

So I guess all of this rambling is to articulate that Derek Yu does know some things, and he has been successful, but I don't consider his opinions to be very valid regarding what makes a good game for the general audience.

I love you. Thanks for making the web feel like the web again <3

I'll meet you halfway and say that only people of Polynesian descent can live there.

White people in Hawaii kills me because they're only there due to the great 3 c's of capitalism - colonization, cannibalization, and commodification.

It's a huge bummer what foreign intervention has done that island. Obligatory fudge America.

I am unfortunately not notified when people respond, which is why I'm late to responding ;)

GenericDev··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Oh! I didn't know that. I'm really new to how to interact with AI. I'll try that out.

Please please please keep it in Japanese. Phonetic english for Japanese is awful. Hiragana only for Japanese is really not ideal.

The current output is absolutely perfect.

Also, I think it's really cool I don't need an account to try that out. Very cash money of you.

GenericDev··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
This is really slick!

I really appreciate you having Japanese as a language choice. I've been dying to hone my japanese skills with AI in lieu of reading grammar/vocab books etc.

I definitely intend to use your product more, because it is definitely scratching that itch!

A couple of things that might help me personally would be the ability to cancel my current response and redo it, as frequently I will stutter or pause on a thought and wish I could restart over.

In that same vein I would love to see the output of what I'm saying in real-time. If only to gauge and understand what the application "thinks" I'm saying and to potentially correct and miscommunications from spoken input.

I would also love the chance to role play or have the tool help me learn contextual role playing. For example in Japanese keigo is a skill I just haven't mastered. I would love a tool to help put me in positions where I need to use keigo, and then be corrected where I'm failing.

Regardless, this is absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing! You're awesome :)

Wow! That sounds really cool. I'd love to hear more. Would you want to talk outside of Hacker News?

@jojohack This is really cool!

One of my billionaire fantasies was to one day archive all of TV Guide and then use that to line up airing blocks for each decade at the start of every decade and then have it available as a streaming option.

Either way! Thank you so much for this!

I'm a user. I want a device that's fair, controllable, extendable, customizable, and lets me control my own data.

GenericDev··on Show HN: Manabi Reader – Learn Japanese by Reading on iOS and macOS (SwiftUI)
For what it's worth "offline first" is a big win in my opinion and would sway me to switch to Manabi. I tried it previously, and the changes you mentioned are something I'm interested in.
GenericDev··on I miss the internet.. A love letter to webmasters and – by Joan Westenberg
Me too. I don't know if it's ever coming back. And I'm not sure how to bring it back.

I still choose to create and share information, but the barriers are so much higher and noise is drowning the signal.

It's a bummer having seen the Internet go from nothing to the current state of things. There was a golden age and we're losing the good parts from it.

GenericDev··on My Deep Guide – Boox Tab Ultra C Review of Best Color E-Ink 10.3 Android Tablet [video]
I'm a big fan of e-ink, and the color e-ink technology that's finally hitting the market is getting me very very excited.

I just found out the new Boox Tab Ultra C just came out, and if I didn't already get the Nova Air C I would have gotten this instead! A little bummed hah.

Same. It doesn't seem like there's a lot of ownership with the device.
GenericDev··on 32“ E Ink screen that displays daily newspapers on your wall (2021)
I would love to buy this so I can put up classic newspapers and read them. Such a cool idea.

A bit of a side tangent, but I have been trying to locate newspaper archives, and I just can't find them anywhere for download outside of newspapers.com, and even then they rate limit the hell out you. There is not effective way to bulk download these artifacts so I can peruse offline, which is typical :(

Does anyone know where to find bulk old newspaper downloads?

@marginalia_nu if you're reading this, please know that you're an inspiration and that I crazy appreciate what you're doing.

We need people like you in the world pushing to make interesting things that aren't necessarily profit driven, but instead seek to help add flavor and interest back into the world.

Your search engine is the kind of technology that reminds me of the technology ethos from the 90s and it's so amazing to see you get the chance to actualize it! Don't waste this chance!

No matter what, know that this is the right decision. You have fans, and we're rooting for you!

Thank you for making cool stuff!

GenericDev··on My 24 year old HP Jornada can do things an iPhone still can't do
Dang. This is the future I wanted to see for mobile devices.

Really bummed where we're at right now in the mobile ecosystem. It's crazy to me that even now iOS/Android still obscure your directories from you, and navigating them is treated as something to hide from the users despite being an integral part of the operating system.

Really wild how these companies leaned into disrespecting their users. A lot of people might say "It's to help the users and remove touch points they don't care about", but the truth is that in making these decisions they have trained users to ignore these mental models and completely hidden or removed the opportunity to normalize these aspects of the operating systems and the device.

Really wish it wasn't this way.

The fact that they've shipped two devices says otherwise? What are you trying to prove by being contrarian? They've shipped products that people are using.
GenericDev··on I wore the Apple Vision Pro. It’s the best headset demo ever
I said this in a previous thread and I'll repeat it here again.

Magic Leap[1] did it years ahead of them, and in my opinion better.

I mean - they're doing pass-through AR which is silly. There's all this work being done to emulate people and faces when they could just build lenses.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills watch everyone get so hyped over this, because there's literally better devices already out on the mark. This is effectively a $3500 Oculus device. Like what the heck? I know it's just because Apple made it, but still. This is pretty weird to watch the reaction.
