InfamousRece··on Is GPT-4 Worth the Subscription? Here’s What You Should Know
No
InfamousRece··on OpenSUSE Linux gains momentum
I moved from Kubuntu to OpenSuse Tumbleweed after Firefox snappification. I’m quite happy so far. KDE Plasma experience seems to be better than Kubuntu. On the other hand it is a less popular distro so less hand holding is available - most tutorials and blogs assume Ubuntu so I can’t follow them blindly anymore…
InfamousRece··on GPT-4 performs significantly worse on coding problems not in its training data
Sentience is just the capacity to experience feelings and sensations. Goldfish can do it and AI can’t (so far).
InfamousRece··on Design of GNU Parallel (2015)
moreutils have its own parallel utility that I actually prefer to Gnu parallel.
InfamousRece··on Laptop Brands with GNU/Linux Preinstalled
They probably have an agreement with Microsoft to ship windows on everything.
InfamousRece··on Noncompete clauses: Companies say they need them, research shows that’s not true
You have to be careful with that. Sometimes unenforceable non-compete can be amended by a judge and become enforceable. I believe the term is “blue pencil” rule vs “red pencil” rule.

InfamousRece··on OldLinux: Ancient Linux Resources
What finally came true? That the RISC took over from 80x86?
InfamousRece··on Smartphones and social media are destroying children’s mental health
Smoking reduces your chances of getting Parkinson’s disease so it is probably less than 100% bad.
InfamousRece··on Ask HN: Why are Windows and macOS upgrades so terribly slow compared to Linux?
Some modern linux distros use snapper to create a snapshot prior to upgrading. This snapshot can be used to roll back the upgrade. Not only in case of power outage but also if the upgrade introduces bugs or other issues. The upgrade is still fast, so it is the best of both worlds?
InfamousRece··on A cruise company offers remote workers to sail around the world for $30k a year
Presumably their internet access is provided by the satellite connection? Will this be good enough for a zoom meeting?
InfamousRece··on Testing multiple Python versions with nox and pyenv
I was told the opposite - that the current mess is because the “Python team” did not sit down to consider deployment setups at all.
InfamousRece··on University administrators used ChatGPT to write email following mass shooting
I guess a ChatGPT generated apology is in order.
InfamousRece··on Google's Go may add telemetry that's on by default
There is lots of tools written in Go these days, so this can potentially have wide reaching consequences. Prepare for your friendly docker executable to start shoveling telemetry to Google.
InfamousRece··on Tell HN: Microsoft classifies own emails as junk
It’s possible that many users classify them as junk and so the Bayesian filters learn from that. Plus they might actually be junk. The filters are usually content based.
InfamousRece··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
I had an offer from robotics company: 80k and no benefits. I’m not sure where to find good paying C++ jobs outside of finance.
InfamousRece··on Ask HN: Reject/ghost on all job applications with 8 YoE, what am I doing wrong?
Cover letters are a waste of time. You‘ll spend lots of effort writing to 10 companies or so and then they will just ghost you. Applying for a job is a numbers game. Send 50 resumes and get 1 phone call. Or maybe use your network if you have one. Nobody reads cover letters.
InfamousRece··on We asked ChatGPT to write layoff memo, it turns out this is 'a difficult time'
Dear Brent

Due to firm's restructure, tough biz decisions had to be made. We regret to inform that we must let go some staff. Our aim was to make cuts in a way that affects biz min. The team will be leaner, but still strong. We are grateful for all you have done for the firm. Your last day will be next Fri.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

InfamousRece··on Meta prohibited from using personal data for advertisement
They like personalized ads because they work for ad tech.
InfamousRece··on Can’t Hear What Actors Are Saying on TV? It’s Not You
And it is fun when the movie has some foreign language dialogue with subtitles but the subtitles are covered by “[SPEAKS MANDARIN]”.
InfamousRece··on Visa changes chargeback dispute program
Cancellation is not always easy. Any “recurring” charge will helpfully reopen your closed account. I guess it’s better to just use prepaid gift cards for subscriptions.
InfamousRece··on Religious Discrimination at Google
In what way are they different? There is no evidence any divine entities are real just like there is no evidence that Santa is real.
InfamousRece··on Gitea – a painless self-hosted Git service
Last time I tried Gitea, it was surprisingly difficult to migrate existing git repos. I hope they made it easier.
InfamousRece··on HP Dev One Laptop with Pop_OS
I can definitely see myself using this machine. 16GB is enough for me as I don’t use electron. 8 core Ryzen is decent too.
InfamousRece··on Tell HN: With IPv6, hosting from home is trivial
Do you have static IPv6 address? In my case the prefix changes once per week or so. And that change is quite disruptive because it causes all devices on my network to completely change their addresses.
InfamousRece··on Fedora 36: Fonts in GTK 4 apps look different, more blurry
Gray blurry text on gray background is a pinnacle of modern design it seems.
InfamousRece··on Why can an ad break the Windows 11 desktop and taskbar?
$139 for Windows Home and $199 for Windows Pro. Where I come from this would not be called giving away.

Official MS pricing: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/windows?activetab=pi...

InfamousRece··on What Happens When You Try to Sue Your Boss
The other party would then file Motion to Compel Arbitration. This will usually result in the dismissal of the lawsuit.
InfamousRece··on Windows 98 Icons are Great (2015)
It's possible to get Solaris CDE working on Linux [1]. I'm not sure how usable it is though.

InfamousRece··on Avoiding a transit of the United States
They haven't (as of 2018 at least).
InfamousRece··on Ask HN: I need to make extra $20k for a mortgage balloon payment. Any advice?
You can use Plastiq (https://www.plastiq.com) to put it on a credit card, but this comes with a 2.5% fee (which will be $500 in your case, so quite steep).
