JSONderulo··on Ask HN: IT stories I cant sell

JSONderulo··on Ask HN: FOMO by working in startups only vs. Big companies
I've done both and there are pros/cons for both tracks. Currently at a startup - it can be total chaos with crazy highs and ridiculous lows. You have to love solving problems and particularly the problem your company is solving. You realize at big companies you have more resources in theory but while there's a department or someone to do whatever you need, there's also internal politics that tends to come w/ bigger orgs to access the resources, move up etc. At a startup you figure out how to help fill those gaps and do things that aren't in your job description because everyone has to just figure it out and yeah that can be exhausting, but it can also feel really good when you get stuff done. If your bet pays off, it can really pay off but it's important to take a hard look at the risks the company is up against to make sure the upside is there and realistic. I'll also add, my closest friendships in business have been from my startup experience.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: How do you structure your to-do lists?
I've used a single Notion doc with toggles for the months, weeks, and days. I'm keeping it as a single doc to track my progress for the year.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Where do you go to meet interesting people (not engineers)?
The gym can be helpful. I would go at the same time and eventually befriend the regulars.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What's Up with Google?
Same, I've found you.com much more useful than DDG, especially for code related searches. Been using it for a month and haven't gone back.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Best site(s) to look for freelance illustrators/animation artists?
Dribbble
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: My coworker doesn't work. Does it make sense for me to say anything?
Been there. literally used to keep a running list of the excuses from a coworker on my team. totally demotivating for the rest of us busting our butts. I was young and didnt call it out. Guess i thought our manager would notice. Maybe they did but they didn't do anything. I didnt stick around.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: My coworker doesn't work. Does it make sense for me to say anything?
Fact.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What do you snack on while coding?
Just coffee these days. I feel like I stopped snacking in the last 2 years. I snacked much more when we were in the office. lots of trailmix, wasabi peas, M&Ms, and bowls of cereal. I always had wet wipes lol because of snacks.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: For normal sleepers, what is your sleep experience?
I still struggle with sleep, have for years. I have tightness in my chest and the negative thoughts come up too. I think it's worse in the wintertime for me. I'm trying a new thing to just get outside and get 15 minutes of sun right in the morning with my coffee... not always easy though.
JSONderulo··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
same, but lately been I've doing technical searches on you.com
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Falling Asleep to Podcasts
Depends on the mood. I can't sleep without a podcast or audiobook now. I use airpods but they fall out during the night. and I get bummed if I wake up and can't find them or need to listen to something else to fall asleep again at 4am and the battery is drained.
JSONderulo··on You're missing out if all you negotiate is money
Always equity.

But to add to your list of ideas: New one in remote work a WeWork membership or some sort of coworking office space membership just to get out of the house.

JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Is Web3 real or marketing hype?
Probably a bit of both. That said, I think it could be huge. The web we know now was created via protocols that enabled what we all experience today in terms of connectivity, social media, ecommerce, apps etc (Web2). Blockchain technology and the associated protocols bring a new overlay that will enable us to build really interesting businesses, experiences etc that are enabled by trust / logic etc being built into the code. Altering and in some cases eliminating the role of many intermediaries while creating opportunities to build innovative / new business models. Feels a lot like it did 20 or so years ago when people were super excited about the possibilities of the Internet but we didn't really know what was going to work out vs flame out etc. Safe to say this will be something that will take 10+ years to play itself out.
JSONderulo··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
I've been playing around with you.com after someone mentioned on HN. I dig the layout/quality of results. It's kind of interesting to have it feel like you're netflixing your search results by source (reddit, stack overflow, etc.) I'm still toggling back and forth on you to google because i feel like i might miss out something. Surprisingly some the results have exceeded my expectations. We'll see.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: How do you force yourself to do boring tasks?
Force myself and time box it. Set up my workspace, pour myself a coffee, listen to classical music, and give myself a hard deadline. Not easy, but I find having the right set up gets me in that mentality to get it done.
JSONderulo··on University Requiring Use of VPN
Same. My university required it. I just turned it off when I wasn't doing school-related stuff.
JSONderulo··on How do you deal with rejection?
The first thing is to sleep before sending any email back to the person who rejected you. Take some time to breathe and have someone you trust give any draft you write a read through before sending. It never helps to go negative.

Afterward, I take the time to mourn and process the rejection. It sucks and that's very human. I've been rejected more times than I can count, and at times, I was overly confident that a job was going to be mine during the interviews.

I've learned to keep going and put myself out there over and over regardless of what happens. I'm doing this right now for a job that's really calling me, like one of those 'I don't want to wake up at 60 with regret if I don't at least try.' You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

JSONderulo··on Ask HN: How does my Instagram keep getting compromised?
Halfway through this pod. This is terrifying.

Her Instagram Handle Was ‘Metaverse.’ Last Month, It Vanished.

JSONderulo··on Ask HN: How do you produce product/feature demo videos?
Motion Array is pretty great for templates for showcasing an app or website. I've made a couple using those templates and Adobe After Effects.
JSONderulo··on How to build my own information feed / front page?
Been trying out mailbrew for a couple of weeks now. I'm liking it so far. Increased productivity.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Favorite Purchases of 2021?
Same. Used to think they were ugly. Now they're my go-to shoe.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Truth is one, paths are many.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: Where are you getting your money's worth?
Patagonia. Money-back guarantee, super high quality. Completely committed to the environment.

Certain publications (Economist) and Substacks.

JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
Psychology of Money from Morgan Housel was a game-changer. Highly recommend.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What's Your Opinion on Web3?
Can't help but pay attention to the recent conversations over the last 3 days between Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, Chris Dixon, Marc Andreessen, and Balaji amongst others. True decentralization and blockchain enabled business models are fascinating.
JSONderulo··on Ask HN: What is the best podcast you listened to in 2021?
All-In pod has become a ritual for me. Also love The Knowledge Project w/ Shane Parrish.
