MIT_Hacker··on Thiel Fellowship Applications open for 2014
Remember that this isn't an incubator, so a lot of them aren't making startups. For example, Dale Stephens is doing http://www.uncollege.org/ (Organization aimed at promoting lifelong learning through "bootcamps") and Laura Deming is doing http://longevity.vc/ (VC firm aimed at funding companies trying to solve aging)

I know of a couple of exits, but I'm not actually sure which are public so I'm trying to find articles.

Some of my favorite current projects are Charlie Stigler (http://www.zaption.com/), Dylan Field (http://figma.com/) <-- Look at TC coverage to see what they are making, and Clay Allsopp (http://usepropeller.com/)

Again, the Fellowship is not an accelerator, so judging it based off successful exits is a terrible criteria.

I hear typing gets a little slower when you're over 20 ;)

I find this post to be a little bit uninformative. Sam is making the argument that the most successful companies are those that bridge the physical and digital world and increase a human's efficiency to complete a task. The startups that do best are those that focus on this.

This seems like a bit of a trivial statement in my mind. Is this not what most startups are trying to do? Solving an inefficiency in the world.

Before the last five years, it has been difficult for PG's definition of startups to focus on the physical world, because of our discomfort with putting parts of our physical world online. Most successful startups up until now have helped build up an infrastructure that has allowed new startups to emerge that tackle physical problems.

I.E. Uber required Apple to develop the iPhone and a lot of startups rely on Heroku and Parse as a service.

I really enjoy Sam's writing, and I was excited for a post dealing with the advent of hardware startups with the success of 3D-printing. I didn't find this post to be up to par with some of his other posts.

It's just "man"
MIT_Hacker··on Here is a puzzle entitled "lowercase"
Welp. Brute-forced and got all the single-word answers, but some of the answers are multi-word.
MIT_Hacker··on Here is a puzzle entitled "lowercase"
We just got that last one but haven't been able to advance!
MIT_Hacker··on Uber is Hiring
Uber wasn't YC

Edit: And thus can't use the official jobs board

MIT_Hacker··on Here is a puzzle entitled "lowercase"
Let's hope HN can help me with this. Trying to go through the puzzle and brute-forcing with a dictionary.
MIT_Hacker··on Show HN: I built an app to manage your meds
Hey Pradeep!

The only reason why I haven't published it internationally was because of language issues. Drop me a line at delian@nightingaleapp.com and I can figure out where it would be appropriate to publish.

MIT_Hacker··on Show HN: I built an app to manage your meds
JQM actually!
MIT_Hacker··on Show HN: I built an app to manage your meds
Hey guys,

My friend and I built this over the last couple of months and have been having a ton of fun testing this out with some elderly users! Feel free to drop us a line at founders@nightingaleapp.com

Thanks!

MIT_Hacker··on Ask HN: What should I do?
There's actually a great company called Balbus Speech which develops mobile apps for speech therapy. I've watched someone go from being unable to speak to perfectly flowing English while using their solutions.

MIT_Hacker··on Build an AirBnB Clone in a Day
Thanks! Haha, the only reason I recognized it so quickly is because I use their tool so often.

It's really awesome and deserves a mentioned wherever used.

If only you could attribute your images properly. I can't find an attribution or mention of PlaceIt or Breezi anywhere.

MIT_Hacker··on Filepicker.io Launches new Mobile Web experience
Just poking around with the Android library, this is a huge step up from where the library was when I used the beta over the summer.

The native camera integration is a LOT cleaner now.

MIT_Hacker··on How Square taught me to be an entrepreneur
Aww... I don't understand why this got flagged.

MIT_Hacker··on Speak in French: Mantaphrase, an app that enables language foreign conversation
Good ol' wlue. This is one of the few apps I continuously suggests to my friends.

I'm a lover of languages, but it can be really daunting to go to a new country, even though it's the best way to learn.

Mantaphrase breaks down that barrier.

MIT_Hacker··on Students helping students launch startups
As one of the partners of the team, I'm really excited to see this finally launch and help the Boston student entrepreneurs.
MIT_Hacker··on Show HN: Mantaphrase, an app that lets you converse in a foreign language
So legit. I'm taking Chinese right now and not only does this let you converse in a foreign language, but it can help you learn the characters for everday sayings along the way. Great design and I'm excited to see that it's launched!

Probably has nothing to do with Starbucks. Just bad timing with a company that needs a lot of 9s of uptime.
MIT_Hacker··on Square introduces monthly pricing
I think it's the perfect response to the Starbucks deal. It shows that Square is still keeping small businesses as their top priority.

MIT_Hacker··on Improving HTTPS Performance with Early SSL Termination
This post shows off how engineers aren't the best at showing off their work. I think if the author abstracted this post and didn't dive so far into the technical aspects of the problem, it could appeal to a much wider audience.

For example, the discussion of nginx could be abstracted into a discussion of graph theory, where a handshake has to occur with a secure cluster of nodes.

This is all just IMHO. Great post though!
