I loved "Algorithms to Live By" by Brian Christian and tom Griffiths. It's not quite as focused on the technical side of things as the books you listed, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

Do you think the monolith approach is simpler than a front-end first approach with BaaS for backend stuff?

One more suggestion that would, IMO, be fairly simple. Tell the user to write in their subject line a {accessKey: 'someKey'}. The access key is given to them at the time of creation and can be regenerated as often, or rarely, as the user prefers. If they want update it weekly to provide an extra layer of security they can, or they could keep it the same forever with it just bein a handy backup in case they do link the random email. Just a thought.

Instead of a permanent IPv4 ban consider issuing a temporary one just long enough to dissuade the aggressor from continuing their behavior. This would be just as effective, and is far less likely to impact others down the road.

I don't buy this in the context of advertising. If a company selling do-rag's or haircare products for the hair type found in most black people targeted primarily black Americans would that be racism? No. Not in the malicious sense of the word at least. That should be perfectly within their rights as an organization.

You can report them fairly quickly, there should be a "report" button directly on/under the ad itself. I'm not sure how effective it is at stopping these sort of ads, but it is a step you can easily take.

So the law should be against deceptive, false, or otherwise misleading ads. The law shouldn't be against targeted advertising based on age or any other socioeconomic grouping.

What does that statement have to do with the comment you're responding to? Yes cops should kill fewer people, but as the person to whom you replied mentioned, police violence is far from the most serious issue facing the US currently. Let's get outraged at the obesity epidemic, let's revolt against black on black violence in the inner cities, let's "defund" platforms which encourage division and turmoil.

Even my comment is derivative, the point is that news and media outlets are able to control public opinion even by being honest and factual. By simply ignoring some facts it's trivial for these outlets to skew their audiences perspectives on current events. The whole "left vs right" ideology is toxic and cancerous to a healthy society and it sickens me. It's increasingly difficult to hold a moderate opinion about a subject without being demonized by one group of extremists or another.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, I agree entirely about the reward in finding a sense of agency of ones own life. The mentality I wrote about has a way of robbing us of our independence and leads to a deeply rooted unhappiness. I truly believe it to be a major contributor to so much of the turbulence in the world today.

Ditto to the other reply to your comment. RoR is extremely well recognized and widely praised. It's fallen out of fashion in the past few years, but I don't know anyone who doesn't recognize it as a great piece of technology.

One would think that the multitude of already established terms for this symbol would, if anything, vindicate the use of the term "hashtag". It demonstrates that there is already a historical precedent for contextual consideration when naming the # symbol.

What an individual may find objectional and what an organization with a founded interest in maintaining a positive public image in the todays political turbulence may find objectional are very different things. It's far too easy to stray on the wrong side of the masses for even the slightest perceived misstep.

I think that this quote, while well meaning, misses what being lower class is. It's about the constance worry and anxiety over being able to provide. It's being terrified of every accident or potential set back. It's about constantly sacrificing wants for needs. Being even upper middle class alleviates many of these, and being rich alleviates almost all of them entirely.

I'm not going to create an account with the WSJ just to read that article, but from the opening paragraph I don't see how it support your claim. It appears to be talking about something AT&T did?

Not Chinese, I also care. That comment is an example of subtle racism.

Image the following comment: "You better buy a good bike lock, else you're at risk of having it stolen by a black man."

A comment like the one above would spark near universal outrage at the commenter, and with good reason. It's racist, and the original comment here is the same. Unnecessarily racist.

Not really very obscure. It's an incredibly popular show and I would be willing to bed that at minimum 50% of coworkers would understand the reference.

I don't think it's very difficult to use context to understand what's being said by the commenter.
