MathCodeLove··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
Instead of stating "I dont believe that" how about you post some data to the contrary?
MathCodeLove··on The data are clear: The boys are not all right
He does, but he's painted as some awful far-right figure head for daring to mention mens issues and protesting legally compelled speech.

Anyone who takes the time to listen to what he has to say knows his views are actually quite reasonable and mild.

MathCodeLove··on Early ‘lab-grown’ Covid virus found in sample lends weight to Wuhan theory
What is the xenophobia in that? Jokingly calling a virus that originated in China after a martial art that originated in China.

That's xenophobic... how?

MathCodeLove··on Early ‘lab-grown’ Covid virus found in sample lends weight to Wuhan theory
There are still plenty of people who will accuse you of sinophobia if you dare acknowledge the ongoing genocide happening in China.
MathCodeLove··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
Without which, you think personal computing would be in a much better place today. You have no way to verify that belief one way or another.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
You're arguing against yourself. I didn't say any of that.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
What's your point?
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
Did you see them also having hardcore sex constantly? Because that's the true equivalent here.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
Given the context of the conversation you'd have to intententionally misinterpret the message to assume I was talking abut breasts in a non-sexual context. The core takeaway is very much still the same: A child in 2022 will likely be exposed to extreme amounts of sexual content online, far more than most humans in history have had the ability to see their entire lives.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
Thats certainly not as bad as most mainstream pornography, regardless your argument is a red herring. Sexual content existing on one platform isn't an argument against restricting access to platforms made for sexual content.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
I could have easily replaced "breasts" with "intercourse" and the message conveyed would be the same. Children are being exposed to exponentially more sexually charged content in the first few years of their lives than most men historically have been in their entire lives.

This isn't a case of rampant puritanism, go to Pornhub (one of the milder purveyors) and tell me that most of their front-page content is a depiction of healthy sex between two loving adults.

MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
What's contested is if its the porn itself that causes the addiction or the feedback loop and easy access is what leads to compulsive consumption. No mainstream psychological organization is saying that there are no addictive or compulsive behaviors associated with excess porn consuption, just that it doesnt meet the critia as a medically diagnosed addiction and is closer to a compulsion.

For laymen however, referring to it as an addiction is what most accurately encompasses its impact on those who become compulsive consumers of it.

MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
True but I would wager that it certainly wasn't in the same context as often found online. That aside I could (and should) have just used "intercourse" as an alternative example to convey the same point.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
Glad you took that example and interpreted it in bad faith.
MathCodeLove··on Porn sites will be legally required to verify users' age using credit card
This is extremely dismissive of the issue, which does exist to some extent, even if its often over blown.

The problem isn't "13 year olds being traumatized because they see sex on a screen" but "13 year olds developing porn addiction alongside their burgeoning sexuality".

Porn addiction is a very real issue and todays youth is especially susceptible to it. Today a 13 y/o boy can see more breasts in an hour than every one of his prior-digital age male ancestors have seen combined. Its an absolute stimulus overload.

MathCodeLove··on Ask HN: How to raise funds for rare disease research?
Ah yes so China or Russia can invade and establish a totalitarian regime. Excellent idea.
MathCodeLove··on Gut microbe linked to depression in large health study
Personally I like to eat sliced green bell pepper, carrots, celery, and tomatoes with lite ranch as both a snack and often breakfast/"desert". Not entirely sure exactly how much fiber you get from any of those foods, but pretty sure the green bell pepper and celery are pretty high in it.
MathCodeLove··on The EARN IT act will ban LGBT-related content and discussions on the internet
What kind of ridiculously sensationalized title (and blog post) is this? The act is taking steeper measures again child pornography. Are you somehow trying to imply that this will harm the LGBT community?
MathCodeLove··on What the Omicron wave is revealing about human immunity
I'm not doubting this statement, but just am curious about the physiological machinations of it, how does a vaccine (especially one designed for a different mutation) help prevent the severe symptoms of the disease? Like whats going on in the body to make that happen?
MathCodeLove··on Can computers cope with human races? (1989)
But some do. Its easier to ask for race than it is to ask for genetic makeup.
MathCodeLove··on Why Quantum Mechanics?
I think your assumption that he meant the Christian monotheistic god may be the problem. Maybe that's precisely what they meant, but I find more often in these kind of discussions its meant as a placeholder for "The event/entity/unknown source of the universe."

I'm an atheist myself and find no issue in the use of the word God here. We don't know with any certainty how the universe was spawned into being, using God as a sort of shorthand to state as much isn't a problem.

MathCodeLove··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
Okay, good for you, that doesn't at all change my statement. A sitting president talking about "shit hole" countries doesn't equate to constant, enduring criticism from the rest of the world. Glad you can get one over on "other side" though. It's honestly people like you who drive the division that perpetuates the bipartisanship and make it even more difficult to pass legislature that could benefit the country. Before you criticize everyone and everything else, take a look at your own behavior and see if there's anything you can do to mitigate harm at your scale.
MathCodeLove··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
A lot of the world is also thrilled with the defense support provided to them by the US. We don't remain in countries like Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, etc by force. We do so because they couldn't defend themselves without us and they know it - so they request our presence. A lot of these allied nations are participating in those very wars you complain about, but naturally their involvement is usually much smaller since they lack the infrastructure to compete with the US.

When you say "a lot of the world" you really talking about a very specific subset of the world, while there is also much of the world grateful for our presence as we are the only real deterrent from NK, Russia, or China taking their country by force. Feel free to deny or say that I'm "othering" or am perpetuating a boogey-man, but there is very real data and intelligence to support these claims, I'm not just pulling it out of my ass.

MathCodeLove··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
If you're paying either way might as well take a trip to the US where the skilled medical professionals inevitably migrate.
MathCodeLove··on Ask HN: Who has moved from the U.S. to Europe?
I think getting upset comes from the fact that in addition to some very valid criticism, there is a tremendous amount of invalid criticism thrown towards the US. If Germany or Austria or the Netherlands were constantly being insulted on the world-stage then they would likely grow sensitive to criticism as well, even when it is occasionally valid.

Another reason could be the mindless, abject hatred you seem to have of the country. If you approached your criticisms rationally they likely would be better recieved. Instead it sounds like you're spouting what you've read on woke twitter and have left no room for compromise. Saying "The USA is a shithole" is akin to saying "Europe is a shithole". It's a blanket statement that it not unilaterally true for either. I lived in Europe myself for several years and there were things I both loved and hated. There were nice areas as well as shitty areas. After spending those years in the EU, I've come to prefer the US. You're entitled to your opinion, you're not entitled to generalize an entire country and it's population and then insult someone when they object to those generalizations.

MathCodeLove··on Amazon activist’s firing deemed illegal by labor board officials
Jesus Christ. I don't necessarily disagree with you but maybe you should tone it down a little pal. If you truly believe you're on the right side of this argument then argue with rationality and civility. This behavior does nothing to further rational discussion.
MathCodeLove··on Intel's $20B Ohio factory could become world's largest chip plant
I've actually been considering a move to Ohio this June. Any suggestions for whetr in Ohio I should look? My main consideration is low CoL as I work remotely but I'd like there to be stuff to do within a reasonable driving distance.
MathCodeLove··on French moratorium on prion studies after two cases of fatal brain disease (2021)
I didn't say it wasn't, just that it was a poor example of it as the vast majority of kids ended up okay.
MathCodeLove··on French moratorium on prion studies after two cases of fatal brain disease (2021)
I don't think there's any logical conflict. They stated that they thought the type of prion they were handling couldn't infect humans. They see now they were likely wrong.
MathCodeLove··on French moratorium on prion studies after two cases of fatal brain disease (2021)
This really is a poor example. The vast majority of children who grew up doing "dangerous" activities are still alive and well. Survivorship bias is more often used when the chance of surviving is statistically lower than most people realize.
