That seems like a harder thing for the advertisers to measure than impressions or click-throughs and incentivizes the sponsor of the ad to lie about units sold.

That bothered me too, and seems like a bad analogy on top of it all. It presented the idea of an arms race between the bacteria and mosquitoes. Is there actually evidence that bacteria have altered their quorum sensing mechanism due to mosquitoes sensing it as well?

To expand on your comment, it seems to me that the method by which they tested only gave results for which target they found more attractive. "Silencing your bacteria" would still result in non-zero attractiveness due to other factors such as warmth and CO2. It presumably would therefore not actually repel mosquitoes, and you would still be bitten in the absence of better targets (this is especially true if the other nearby targets used the same approach).

Reddit would have had my support if they enforced the rules as you say. Unfortunately Reddit chose instead to enforce the brand new harassment rule, ban the sub, ban the mods, and then ban any sub that even looked like FPH.

It would have been a far, far more effective message if they said "We have banned FPH and the moderators due to their brigading and doxxing. Let this be a lesson to all subs: if you do these things, you will be disbanded." and then left alone all of the other subs that superficially looked like FPH but didn't engage in that specific behavior.

Instead they got a minor revolt, and the latest revolt seems like a manifestation of a lot of the hard feelings from that attempt.

Design decisions and reasons for why you wrote the code the way you did are hard to encapsulate in test cases. Describing the limitations of the obvious method which made you use a less obvious method is pretty instructive for the next person left scratching their head at your implementation.

I currently use T-Mobile, and welcome any advice you have regarding the choice of operators. The question you pose is a sticky one, and why I note that privacy and mobile phone usage are antithetical. I understand that the metadata/content of voice/mms/sms communications, location info (tower info), and the content of your data communications will always be the domain of the telco and there's no solution to that problem other than abstaining.

I'm not sure how I feel about that thorny issue, and it is almost enough to make me forgo a mobile phone. However, I believe that I derive more value from the ability to communicate than I lose by making that data available to the telco and anyone they cooperate with.

Therefore my goals for privacy are to accept that landscape but try to limit which arbitrary other entities get additional data from my mobile phone usage. I attempt to limit the following things where feasible: oversharing from applications, tracking by other entities such as Google/Apple/etc, installed applications to those providing the best tradeoffs, and the amount of plaintext communication from the phone.

I wish opportunistic end-to-end voice/sms/mms encryption was mainstream, that alone would mitigate a large amount of privacy concerns.

I appreciate the reply, but we don't currently have transparency. We have the aggregators and the aggregated, and those doing the aggregating jealously guard their own privacy. If transparency was truly a reachable goal I would embrace it, but I don't find it to be realistic outcome.

Is RP not being maintained then? :/ It's one of the tools that makes me actually like FireFox.

Ghostery should be blocking that sort of content (that's the point), but I really like NoScript and RequestPolicy in conjunction with each other for the control it gives me. Configure firefox to ask to allow flash, and you've got a pretty complete privacy toolset.

It's cool, they'll get a basic income too. ;P

Check out RequestPolicy sometime if you're concerned about GA and other tracking and went through the trouble to bit bucket it in hosts; it's really nice to be able to set which other sites any given site can contact, and I trust it more than the other curated options like Ghostery etc. since I can see for myself where each site is allowed to go.

My first approach for this is to POST to a reboot/ resource which gives you a reboot/123 ID that you can continue to do a GET against to see the status of the reboot (did it start OK? Is the machine back up?).
