PythonDeveloper··on Help What should I do in this situation?
Do you exclusively control the github repo? If so, cut off access and don't give it until payment is made in full. You have an implicit copyright on the code, and he has no right to it until he's paid you in fill.

I'd go a bit further and tell him that if he doesn't pay you within 15 days, the "interest" is $100 per week. No reason you should not get interest on your debt.

Just FYI, I always let customers see "features", but not code, until they've paid in full.

PythonDeveloper··on GoDaddy Bye Bye
Just remember, you can't move domains within 60 days of expiration, and if you let them expire, GoDaddy will snag them through one of their "partners" that they sell expiration data to.
PythonDeveloper··on Can we glimpse God through programming?
Very well put. I have lost entire days in the 'zone', starting at 10am and ending after dark, not even realizing that other in the office have left.. It's kind of like time travel :)
PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: VPS benchmark one-liner with comparison table (updated)
Looks interesting, but isn't number of cores, OS, 32/64 bit, and swap space configuration/hit ratio information pertinent to this benchmark to make it usable?

At the very least, I'd like to know what type of Amazon instance is being used.

PythonDeveloper··on "They're Made out of Meat?" Short first contact sci-fi story
All rightie then.. I think I need to step away from the keyboard and pay attention to real-life for a bit... :-|
PythonDeveloper··on "They're Made out of Meat?" Short first contact sci-fi story
Keep going!! It's like a sequel to the Twilight Zone "How To Serve Man" episode... very cool. Lots of places to go here.
PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: Hello Python, my book about learning python, has just been released
Looks awesome!! I've already recommended it to three friends who are learning Python.
PythonDeveloper··on Should Americans Care About Apple’s iPhone Factory Conditions?
Inasmuch as the thought of it, and the guilt you feel for supporting it, affects your decision to buy, yes. Otherwise, no.

The USA is NOT responsible for the working conditions in any other country, even though Apple clearly condones it. If Americans really cared, they'd eschew Apple for other brands, but they'd probably find pretty quickly that those other brands have similar work situations in their suppliers camps.

Additionally, even though China is not as freely capitalistic as we are, those workers still have the God given right to not engage in that work, or to seek work elsewhere.

Based on what I've heard from friends in China, the workers know going in that they will be pretty much held hostage working for just enough to pay for food and housing provided by the companies they work for.

Choosing to do so is still a choice, and if they have choice, they can still say no.

PythonDeveloper··on You're offered $10mil right now to quit programming for good. Do you take it?
Yep. I love coding, but there are MANY more things in life than programming.

I'd spend a year building houses with Habitat for Humanity and finding a cure for Cerebral Palsy, which my daughter has.

PythonDeveloper··on The AMD Fusion is not my ideal machine.
I have two of these machines. One is a quad-core laptop, and the other is a dual-core E-350 server.

In both cases, the driver provided by AMD was horrific. The drivers that came with LinuxMint and Ubuntu (not the non-free drivers, the default ones) were fantastic and very fast.

I am very happy and run both machines on dual 24" monitors @ 1920x1200 and they scream.

PythonDeveloper··on Amazon sells the Kindle Fire at a loss because it makes so much money on media
I believe it.

It's a rockin machine, and when EVERY other Android device was sold out at Christmas, Best Buy had hundreds in the store.

I've spent probably a hundred bucks this month on Kindle Fire media.. books, movies.. I love it.

That said, it sucks as a development device.

PythonDeveloper··on Goodbye, Apple... forever... mostly...
Tried that, but not all the recipes I need are supported... I suspect there are just not enough users on OSX needing more vanilla Linux solutions.
PythonDeveloper··on Executive Pay Watch
Agreed... they are not publicly traded, but they shouldn't be pointing any fingers.

As for the politics, shouldn't one who cries fiscal foul be judged for their own fiscal idiocy? I'm suggesting you consider the messenger when you look at their purely marketing-message-related website.

PythonDeveloper··on Executive Pay Watch
For what it's worth, the AFLCIO doesn't list themselves in their list. Their CEO, Richard Trumka, makes over $300K/year... More than 5x the average worker, and he got a $50K raise in the past 3 years while his memberships incomes lagged.

How much does the Economic Policy Institute pay him to be on the board of directors?

How much is his net worth?

How is it possible that the AFL/CIO represents their membership, when 100% of 2010 political contributions went to Democrats, and none to Republicans? It's not even statistically possible that it MIGHT be representative. (source : http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/pacgot.php?cmte=C00003806... )

PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: Convince My Friend To Learn Ruby, Not Java, As A 1st Language
Suggest Python... it has the benefits of both.. You can get Ruby-like efficiency in web development, and you can build robust desktop apps using WxWidgets and other similar gui libraries. An added bonus over Ruby, it's readable ;-)

Of course, I'm biased...

PythonDeveloper··on What is a 5% non active equity stake?
It means you don't get a board seat, and you probably get common, non-voting stock.

Sadly, it probably comes WITHOUT an anti-dilution clause, meaning that any new stock allocated will dilute your 5%. As a company progresses through its capitalization phases, new stock is likely to be allocated, usually in new classes that offer more protection to the investors, and less protection to the "monkeys" like us.

Your "5%" will likely be converted to a number of shares at the time it is executed, and that number of shares will likely NOT be 5% of the total number of shares available when a liquidation event (IPO/Buyout) occurs.

PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: Object Oriented databases?
db4o is not unique in the claims it makes. I can store objects from any language in any database. The only requirement, and the reason why db4o only supports java and .NET, is that the language must support serialization of the object in both directions.

I have used this methodology along with Memcache (as a real-time database) in C#, PHP, Python, and Java, as well as storing those objects to PostgreSQL databases.

That said, I don't think I would use db4o simply based on it's claim to be able to store serialized objects. PostgreSQL, my database of choice, has trillions of user hours on it and is well supported by hundreds of thousands of users.

NoSQL databases store the tuples (or tuple-like structures) in indexed form, which is convenient but can be inefficient. I prefer to store only the pertinent tuples for indexing, and the serialized blob by itself as a non-indexed element.

PythonDeveloper··on Where should I move my domains?
I've used 'em all... I like GoDaddy, but their UX is very confusing. Name.com ( http://www.name.com ) is my choice of late. No crap, easy UX, and they actually have an awesome DNS management tool.
PythonDeveloper··on Why you shouldn't buy from Walmart.com(tm) for Christmas... or ever..
Thanks. Tried that. Wells Fargo(tm) states that until it clears, they cannot (read "will not") do anything.
PythonDeveloper··on Kickstarted: How one company is revolutionizing product development
I see your point, but the same quality filters could be had simply by assigning tags, and allowing members to upvote projects.

Let me see what the staff decides is tagged HOT. Don't decide FOR me what is hot and what is not by exclusion.

PythonDeveloper··on Who can explain what the python lines at the end do?
prints the following: "Simon Tatham"

Specifically, it takes a power mapped string sequence and shifts the values off. Each set equates to a line of #'s and spaces. Pretty ingenious, actually.

PythonDeveloper··on Guy Makes $55,000 / Year Selling Candy On The Subway
Nice story... but it doesn't scale :)
PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: Ideas For Implementing A Simple Web App?
The best tool for the job is the tool that lets you finish and ship a product.

Try Python ( http://www.python.org ).

It's free, easy to learn, uses the latest in methodologies, has massive community support, and you can have an app up in 10 minutes.

You can also add django if you want a very well thought out framework with scaffolding, enhanced models, etc.

Check it out on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKTZoB2Vjuk

PythonDeveloper··on World’s first Android 4.0 tablet- Ainol NOVO7. Any reviews?
SOLD! I want 10 units RIGHT NOW.
PythonDeveloper··on Yahoo's WHOIS records borked?
no, it's not. That's a digest response. You need to redo the lookup as =yahoo.com to get their record:

#whois =yahoo.com

(scroll to bottom for yahoo.com listing)

PythonDeveloper··on The last PHP wrapper for MySQL you'll ever need
One non-obvious benefit of PDO is that it lets you separate data from the query, making it much more secure to SQL injection attacks.

Also, as a rule, never put SQL in the page you're rendering... you want it in another class, away from your code so that you only have to write it once if it's used in numerous places.

PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: Please review my landing page
I like... One thing though... If your artists use samples from other licensed music, the RIAA will come after you personally.

* NOT LEGAL ADVICE * I see you have your domain info hidden using WhoisGuard. Good idea.

Better make sure that WhoisGuard won't give you up if they receive a demand letter from RIAA's lawyers. * NOT LEGAL ADVICE *

One last Q... If anyone can listen for free, how will you stop people from downloading what they listen to without paying?

PythonDeveloper··on The last PHP wrapper for MySQL you'll ever need
Ok.. constructive criticism here... not trolling...

A) Not a class. Who writes non-oop PHP anymore? B) Globals. Seriously? What if I need 2 connections in a page load? This won't work. C) Use PDO.

I see the value of the exercise, and I applaude you for it, but PDO has TRILLIONS of sql queries under its belt.

You should use PDO.
