PythonicAlpha··on No politics please, we're hackers, too busy to improve the world
I fear, you are right.

Every time, I speak out for the truth on HN, I am down voted continuously, only half-hearted tech-blabla is suffered here.

What adds up hat HN: Any discussion about important future stuff is instantly penalized by the system here. I really regret to have registered at all.

Just doing geek-stuff and enjoying the live as techie is just to hollow for me. It really makes me sad.

PythonicAlpha··on No politics please, we're hackers, too busy to improve the world
Just curious: Why I am downvoted here?

Any person with a little history knowledge would be able to say that everything is correct, I stated.

But people don't know about history any more, since they think, we are so different today.

We are not -- but who does refrain to learn from history, is bound to repeat it.

Now go on down voting me, and refrain from learning! This generation just builds up the ingredients for the next downfall of humanity.

PythonicAlpha··on No politics please, we're hackers, too busy to improve the world
The German army leaders thought straight this way.

This directly led to the 2nd World War.

PythonicAlpha··on US quits Paris climate pact
Just read the news (and not only HN, since here, the world view is harshly filtered to fit into some world-view -- also don't just rely on one parties supporting news channel).

You always can try to explain things away, but reality is harder.

PythonicAlpha··on US quits Paris climate pact
Might be.

I myself have US-citizen relatives and I know, that some great people live there.

But it is very difficult to be fond of people who elected such people and who (in big parts of the voters) greatly admire his "America first" propaganda.

I am sure, that this "America first" will harm not only the world, but many Americans and I am very sad about it. And I am sad, that those, that did most of the harm and made a profit from it, will get a free ride again, as it was 2008.

People just don't learn.

(BTW: I wanted to post this reply yesterday, but was hindered by this stupid regulatory system here)

PythonicAlpha··on US quits Paris climate pact
This is a bad day for the US, since by such a behavior ("America first -- ignore international pacts"), the other countries will less and less likely follow this country (with exception of Saudi Arabia, of course).

The Europeans are already drawn to China and India and this will grow stronger.

And Trump should not think, that European buyers will be more inclined in the future to support US companies by buying US products.

PythonicAlpha··on US quits Paris climate pact
If he did not do it, I would have to find a different car producer for my next car. So, I have to think about it.

I am not sure, if I want to support US companies in this "America first" situation. A country that so much indulges in egoism is really difficult to like.

The US produces Anti-Americanism itself.

PythonicAlpha··on Science was ignored today
Isn't that the organization, that mainly was crippled by Trump?
PythonicAlpha··on Science was ignored today
It is clear, which view Trump has: America first. When this planet is going dump, the American rich shall profit from it.
PythonicAlpha··on Science was ignored today
I am very sad, that it is possible, that one man brings us back into the dark ages of early industrialization with all its problems for humanity.

In the 90s we thought, that our generation is better and knows it better than any prior generation. Now we see, that humanity has not made much progress from the middle ages.

Today, we are worse: in the middle ages, humans had no science. But today we have it and ignore it, because it does not fit into our live-plans.

That is right. I just know, that many companies flee from GPL licenses (and more so AGPL). They omit any product involving GPL just to be sure not to get any juristic hassles (if rational or not).

Here is the culprit: When no other people invest in enhancements, there is also nothing that can go back upstream.

I like free software very much, but I also don't want to be forced to give things free, that I make. Problem is not the small enhancements I make to an OSS product, but when I link or use some OSS part in a bigger software that I made -- should I always be forced to give everything for free?

Particularly for companies, that is a difficult thing.

To be clear: Of course I would give away my contributions to an OSS product, but I also want to be free, to use OSS in commercial products without need to fear that I loose my own rights.

GPL here is just difficult and when lawyers have to decide about software, anything can happen (as in the patent-wars).

PythonicAlpha··on Inside VW’s Campaign of Trickery
I don't think, that E-Mobility per se is fixing the problem. I just think, that many things could/should be done, but most opportunities just where wasted for decades now, because of pure short-term profit thinking.

The other thing is, because the Germans waited so long, they are about to loose there own possibilities. Now other countries are far ahead -- morally and technologically.

PythonicAlpha··on Inside VW’s Campaign of Trickery
I am ashamed, that my government (the German one) has effectively helped to cover things up for decades now in the EU and they are still doing it.

They are still blocking realistic pollution regulations for cars in the EU and they help car manufacturers to come away with their manipulations in the EU without real sanctions.

In the US, buyers of such cars get a compensation. In Germany, they will never get a penny.

But what is worse, people get sick and die (+) because of air pollution in the EU and everybody knows it and they just ignore it or downplay the problem.

(+) the numbers of pollution related illnesses is on the rise and medical studies verify the fact that it is a problem.

In many cities now, we have regularly pollution values high above thresholds, but also here, the government and local authorities block effective countermeasures.

It is so bad, that (a newer study found out) cars which should be better in pollution because of EU regulations (so called EU5) are sometimes even worse than their predecessors (EU4), because the EU willingly puts a blind eye on real pollution values.

And it is all, because the German government wants to protect German car producers.

I hope, E-Mobility will kill German car manufacturers. And I know, that it will be bad for my Home-country, but they (the manufacturers) deserve it, since they did not care about real clean cars for so long.

PythonicAlpha··on Wikipedia blocked in Turkey
Hitler came out of largely "free" elections.

I don't think, that every despot is similar to Hitler, but still it is a despot.

BTW: How do you recognize a despot: He behaves like one. Just open your eyes!

PythonicAlpha··on Wikipedia blocked in Turkey
>Turkey is going through transformation, and it will come out of it stronger and mostly becoming pillar of Middle East.

Like Nazi Germany grew stronger and stronger and grew to be the leader of Europe (+)?

((+) until it was vanquished of course by democratic countries -- but where do you find democratic countries, when you need one?)

PythonicAlpha··on Kirby is a file-based CMS
That is, what I wanted to point out.
PythonicAlpha··on Kirby is a file-based CMS
The front page says:

    "NoSQL? Kirby Prefers NoDB!

Kirby is file-based – No database involved. This means first class performance,
version controllable content, simple backups and many other awesome sideeffects."
What other "awesome" sideeffects? I tried the link and found only a download page. I also scanned threw the documentation and found no further statements and no explanation.

Seams to me, that the claims are just made without any explanations or prove. Sad.

Edit:

The claims are nice, but many of those are rather thin. For example, content in a database is also version controllable. I see no substantial advantage here in content on the file system.

PythonicAlpha··on Show HN: JSONlite – A simple, serverless, zero-configuration JSON document store
I currently don't see the similarity to SQLite, that is implied in the readme.

SQLite stores all its data (every table and all entries in tables) in one single file. JSONlite does store every JSON entry in one particular file, as much I saw. So, JSONlite uses the file system (one directory) as data storage -- in contrast to SQLite!

PythonicAlpha··on Trump order strips privacy rights from non-U.S. citizens
The so called "Privacy Shield" was from the start just a renaming of the previous existing contract between the US and the EU. Thus it did not protect anything more than it was protected before.

Until the EU stops to make such "show politics" for the masses, nothing will change and we will get such contracts that essentially have no effect at all.

PythonicAlpha··on I Had My Electronics Seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection
When you compare things, you will end up, that today those people have for more elaborate techniques for spying on us. When the people which have done it in East Germany, look at what is done in the West today, they have tears in their eyes, because what they did was Kindergarden in comparison.
PythonicAlpha··on Diesel cars produce more toxic emissions than trucks and buses, EU study says
The sad truth is, that we would not need stricter standards, if the current standards would be met in reality -- that would be much better than another EURO 7 or 8.

The other sad thing is, that the praised German car manufacturers are about to loose against new comers from the US and China. Good for the environment and the health of the people of course .... but how said Gorbatschow: "Who comes to late ..."

But that is the trouble: Our ministers all have their fallback positions in the industry. Just have a look at the former Schroeder government and what happened to those people.

PythonicAlpha··on Diesel cars produce more toxic emissions than trucks and buses, EU study says
Because they actively blocked (and still do) any attempts in the EU to release real-life regulations (not measure pollution in artificial environments, but on the roads!) -- for many years now. And still, they hinder that car buyers in Germany get the same compensation as US customers do.

The German news where full of it.

It is not helpful, when the labs are cleaner during car testing, but at the roads the people suffer from the pollution. VW is not the only brand, that optimizes the emissions for artificial environments.

PythonicAlpha··on Diesel cars produce more toxic emissions than trucks and buses, EU study says
The other part is, that producing cleaner Diesel cars is just more costly -- that was the main reason for VW to cheat.
PythonicAlpha··on Diesel cars produce more toxic emissions than trucks and buses, EU study says
One of the reasons, I am not proud to be a German, since it was/is my government (shame on them all!) that actively prevents real progress in the area of emission reduction of cars.

Reality is, that ADAC or TÜV years ago already warned, that EURO 6 cars may produce even more emissions than EURO 5 cars. So, decades of EU environment politics where just Potemkin villages to please German car producers.

PythonicAlpha··on Rogue One – An Engineering Ethics Story
I don't know, which kind of ethics you would prefer.
PythonicAlpha··on Rogue One – An Engineering Ethics Story
Even, when you have a totally true and unbiased report of a true story, will it always lead to the right ethics?

I very much doubt so.

There where to many people living, that brought suffering to others without ever been punished. Many people that slaughtered others, where living a wealthy life till their end. And others, that did good, ended in poverty.

No, "true" life sometimes teaches the wrong ethics. Or should we find our ethics in slaughtering each others?

PythonicAlpha··on Rogue One – An Engineering Ethics Story
Fictional is not always "wrong" or "false" as you claim.

There are so many fictional books which have so much to teach.

You can think of Star Wars how you like, but condemning fictional stories as bad only because they are no "true" stories -- is very short-sighted in my eyes. (and in my opinion a totally wrong understanding of the principles of logic).

There are also so many "true" stories, where you can draw the wrong ethics from!! (newest events included!)

PythonicAlpha··on Lost Diamonds: How our current system is failing underprivileged talent
> if you know you have more than one shot, you're more likely to succeed on your first try

That is most likely also one of the reasons, why there are more (successful) Entrepreneurs in the US than in Europe. At least in Germany, when your first startup fails, you are broke and nobody will give you any funding any more (not to forget, that to get your first funding, is much harder in Germany).

PythonicAlpha··on A Letter to the Berlin Startup Scene
I like startups, because they are a way of bringing new thinking into the world, where dinosaur corporations rule.

But there has also settled some notion today, to make making startups like having an assembly line. It is no more about having new ideas or about solving worlds problems -- it is solely about burning more and more cash and making new cash-cows from it. The idea itself, the customers and the people working on it, have become second nature.

All of it is of course hidden by a geeky, hip culture, where everybody can feel fine -- if he does not think to much about it.

PythonicAlpha··on A Letter to the Berlin Startup Scene
I disagree. A startup should at least have a draft business model and also a startup should make sane investments in its personal (I rather dislike the word "human capital").

Just burning people like burning money to someday find either a big buyer or a sane business model -- really looks rather insane to me.
