PythonicAlpha··on Cython 0.23 released
To answer the question, that came up:

Yes, the 0.x number also put me down at first. But I am using this tool now several years, since 0.13 or maybe earlier and did never find a bug or problem.

Cython is great, in-spite of its version number!

I also inspected the generated code several times and it looks rock-solid. Also one big advantage (for me): It can produce code that runs equally on 2.x and 3.x versions (there are some limitations, though, like several really outdated versions are not supported any more).

Thanks for the info! Currently, I never worked in the gaming industry and I believe not many big studies are located in Germany. There are some online game studies in Germany, though, but I think, they pay a lot less than the big AAA studios.

Wow, nice photo with Richard! Now I saw, you already have your own Wikipedia page ;)

I really want to have more time, to play U5 again ...

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep ...

Ultima V is still my favorite ;)

I guess so. But it is a little difficult to get data from veteran people, since those figures are most often negotiated in silence. All I can see are the entry level offerings and they are in deed often below those for web-developers. I think, it is similar as in other areas -- when you manage to be seen as key-developer, you are in a much better negotiation position -- but for that, you must be either a star from the beginning or done some real great tasks in the company.

Thanks!

To make it short: I am currently building a strategy online game as a browser-game (only a current browser and JavaScript is needed). I think, that currently most online games lack strategic/tactical depth and rely on almost all the same mechanics (city-building and build up the biggest army), with only small differences (topic, graphics and some minor mechanics are different, the basics are mostly the same).

I hope, that I can convince enough grognards that online-gaming can have depth.

Thanks, Randy, for sharing your thoughts, too!

As aspiring indie-developer myself, I always love to read about those that already have marketed their first games and can share their experiences.

I hope, your game will be a success! I saw, at Steam the reviews and images look very good!

Oh, of course there are some areas. I also can name the one or other. But when you want max-out your chances, to get hired and are not a star-programmer in such an area, you will possibly find yourself in some dull and boring area, how I found myself one day (I must admit, that I had total different expectations about the job, but that is a long story by itself ...).
PythonicAlpha··on Five Years of Being a Full-Time Indie Game Developer
I did not want to touch that topic, since there are different things to consider and experiences can differ.

I mentioned only working in a company, since from that what I saw in my country, compensation for ordinary developers in a company are far less than when working in other sectors as software developer (in deed, I do not know any sector, where payment is less than in the Gaming industry). At least one plus is that the Gaming industry is more likely to take people without formal education (which might also be connected to the lower wages).

Of course, when working in a company, you are less likely to not be able to pay your rent any more.

PythonicAlpha··on Five Years of Being a Full-Time Indie Game Developer
> both in terms of compensation and technical & creative challenges open to solve

Can you name other "career paths" where are more technical & creative challenges open to solve?

I am working on an indie game project right now and worked for a big corporation in a total different sector before and I must say, that when you talk about compensation, you might be right (at least, when you are working in a company), ...

... but when thinking about technical & creative challenges, game development always wins for me hands-down in my personal experience.

PythonicAlpha··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
The oil crisis and recession of the 70s has nothing to do with the situation today, at least not directly. More important where the political decisions that where made in this time. Of course they where not all made by Reagan alone, but he was one of the major breaches.
PythonicAlpha··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
Participation of women was invented, not because it was needed, but to compensate for (relatively) reduced wages of the workers.
PythonicAlpha··on Why Rent Is So High and Pay So Low
Reagan ended the Golden years and turned the US around from worker friendly to money-friendly. The result are low taxes for income generated from pure money, high speculation, bailouts for the big corporations and the decline of the US middle class.

Many of the other "western countries" just copy this trend and get the same, just with a few years between.

PythonicAlpha··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
In my country, it is quite different. And I will not speculate further about a country, I don't know. I just wanted to say, that even when the authors of the study do not know the other variables and interconnections, there might be some.
PythonicAlpha··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
> After controlling for family medical history, age, education, diabetes, smoking and many other variables

Did not convince me.

And as I stated, I read a different (German) source, where definitively other possible correlations where named -- when one group contains clearly more rural people as the other, the whole statement that "no clear rationale" can be found, is questionable in my opinion, even when it is not political correct in some countries, that urban people are living less healthy lives.

This has nothing to do with click-bait or not. It is just very questionable to me, that the study is methodical clean.

PythonicAlpha··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
I don't understand. As much I saw, this was a Chinese study and I also guess that most participants if not all, are Chinese.
PythonicAlpha··on Eating Spicy Food Linked to a Longer Life
As much I read about this particular study, in the group of the more spicy eaters, there where plenty of rural people and in the other group more urban people. So, this sounds to me, that there are different factors inside the study which are interconnected and the "evidence" could also be linked to some different factors, for example more healthy lifestyle of rural people (particular in China: I assume healthier air). In the article, I read, they even suspected, that more tea consume of the spicy group could also cause the positive effect.

So, every study should be taken with a grain of salt, particularly when the exact circumstances are not told.

PythonicAlpha··on Why shooting to wound doesn't make sense scientifically, legally or tactically
But I did and that is what is happening. And just keeping quiet about it, does not make it better.
PythonicAlpha··on Why shooting to wound doesn't make sense scientifically, legally or tactically
They should protect themselves, but not protect themselves and forget to protect others. So, they become a part of the problem.

Even, when you expect everybody to have guns, it does not justify shooting others into the back.

PythonicAlpha··on Why shooting to wound doesn't make sense scientifically, legally or tactically
> as long as police act lawfully

I knew, there is a glitch!

PythonicAlpha··on Why shooting to wound doesn't make sense scientifically, legally or tactically
Maybe, I am from a different planet, but sometimes I heard, that police should protect people, but currently some policemen are more caring about protecting themselves -- and they are trained exactly that way.

This at least, as an European, goes threw my mind, when I read such descriptions and some news from unarmed people shot into the back.

PythonicAlpha··on Ask HN: Do you work in a company that will fire you for average performance?
The question is also very much, how performance is measured. I saw performance measuring that was on the level of "solved tickets" -- with some special cases: E.g. when you did all the research and somebody else closed the ticket (with minimal effort), it was his.

There where plenty of fraudulent abuse of this system and in the aftermath, I guess it would have been better to flip a coin!

In such a system, the performance measuring as such, is undermining the corporate culture.

PythonicAlpha··on New Trans-Pacific Partnership Leak Means ‘Significant Overhaul’ for Canadian Law
Those "partnership" treaties are ultimately used by big corporations and other "big pockets" to annul democratic decisions and processes.

This is seen at the current TTIP negotiations and even more at the results that already in-place treaties have. Look at Mexico and its treaty with the US. The small farmers are the losers of this treaty and corporations are the winners. And not only on the Mexican side are the losers -- also the workers on the US side are losing because work gets cheaper and cheaper and even more important, health and environment standards are undermined!

With all those treaties (which are currently planned or already signed) in-place we have a capitalistic utopia with all the gains of society of decades annulled. Back to the capitalism of robber barons and uncontrolled exploitation (of humans and the nature).

PythonicAlpha··on Flash: An efficient and portable Web server (1999) [pdf]
Might be a good product, but the name "flash" is a little burnt regarding web and web-development.
PythonicAlpha··on German prosecutor sacked over Netzpolitik treason probe
The problem, in my opinion, when I see what is going on in different countries, is that even the constitutional rights are no longer a security belt. This belt is cut by different means. Just change the wording or invent special exceptions or find a loophole, where not enough people go against ... The ways are endless, how constitutional rights are torn apart and I fear this is only the beginning.
PythonicAlpha··on German prosecutor sacked over Netzpolitik treason probe
The NSU case is rather different. I have difficulties to see how all belongs together, but I am also not sure, that incompetency is the only problem. We in Germany have a long history of blind eyes on right-wing criminality. I think, at least it is often covered, for prestige reasons.
PythonicAlpha··on German prosecutor sacked over Netzpolitik treason probe
It might look so, but that is a wrong interpretation. There might be some friction between different parties, but all in all, the system "Merkel" is unbelievable stable, since it is carried by the blind masses, that just don't want any change and are ready for that to swallow nearly anything, this system is throwing at them.

On the other hand, it is a very bad sign for the democratic system of the this country, when now even a warning from the OSZE has arrived in this topic. I remember years, when only third- and fourth-world or Eastern Bloc countries got such warnings and in the German tv it was shown, so we Germans could smile and say, that we are better than "those".

PythonicAlpha··on Defending the One Percent
"In absolute terms" -- you currently know, that there are more underdeveloped countries in the world than so called "first world" countries? And when you also count in countries like Russia than you get a feeling, what is compared to.

Once, the US prided itself to be the most developed nation, today it must compare itself with Uganda and other countries.

Compare tax rates of today with those after the 2nd WW -- the era, where the US flourished most. Today, only the banks of the US are flourishing. When you are no banker and earn below 7 figures a year, you should start to think.

The sentence about "honesty" I will not comment!

PythonicAlpha··on Defending the One Percent
So, your claim is, that Buffett does not know how much taxes he pays? If this would be true, I would wonder, how he got all his money in the first place.

>the United States have a very progressive tax system

Compared to which system? The system of Sweden or of Uruguay? You of course can find dozens of third world countries, with dysfunctional tax system.

I guess, they are similar studies as can be bought (in dozens) in the country, I live in.

PythonicAlpha··on Don't test with SQLite when you use Postgres in Production
Some comments on the arguments:

(1) SQLite did never claim to be as "complete" as other databases -- it is and will be a "lightweight" database.

(2) Everybody with marginal knowledge of different databases should know, that using different databases always puts you on risk and needs extra testing. You would also not recommend to develop your application on Linux, use a crosscompiler and ship the product on Windows untested. And with that said, most of the arguments can be deleted.

(3) When you are using an ORM, most of the arguments are obsolete, too.
