Learning and desperately trying not to forget much of it ...

RandomInteger4··on Rise of Bitcoin Competitor Ripple Creates Wealth to Rival Zuckerberg
People are obsessed with cheap shit, because they took one logical step and said "if this goes up $1, I make more than if Bitcoin goes up $1", but then they leaped over the next step ignoring it completely, which says that there are 100billion XRP, so the likelihood it will go up in price by $1 is rather low.

Granted, enough people bought into the flawed logical to see it happen a couple times over, not realizing that there's no reason for XRP's existence.

What kind of backwards bank do you bank with that doesn't allow transactions to be made from their web portal?
RandomInteger4··on Not only is it possible to beat Google, it could happen sooner than we think
Thanks for the heads up on this. I'll give it a spin.
RandomInteger4··on Not only is it possible to beat Google, it could happen sooner than we think
(1) Is it really that hard to implement 2FA, and (2) Did you just implement the same insecure SMS nonsense that's been getting people's accounts compromised for a while now?, and (3) Did you bother putting anything in your UI saying "Hey! Over here! Look at this new feature!"
RandomInteger4··on Not only is it possible to beat Google, it could happen sooner than we think
Perhaps it's canvas fingerprinting. [1]

I saw an article from 2014 saying ghostery works to defeat it, but haven't looked further and I don't use ghostery, so not sure if that's true still.

You can test it here: https://browserleaks.com/canvas

(1) My impression from using Google is that it's really great for technical / scientific first page search results, but pretty horrible otherwise.

(3) No, I'm pretty sure users want more knobs or at least filter options. Hell, even a simple domain blacklist feature would be amazing so that I could get the woowoo psuedo science cruft -- which has been SEO'd to the front page -- out of my results, so I didn't have to put any mental effort into visually filtering out multiples from the same site. Hell, they could even collate results from the same domain into a single grid folder to optimize the time I spend searching through the search results.

Don't conflate Google's lack of innovation for an optimized experience simply because it's Google. I love Google, but there is a massive amount of improvement that can go into their search user interface. Same for every other search engine, but Google is the leader in this space, so they get the brunt of the criticism, and should they change, then others can follow suit.

When you say fraud, do you mean theft or identity fraud? 2FA is extraordinarily relevant when it comes to theft with regard to online banking. The purpose of 2FA is mostly to prevent automated attacks or remote account entry via password resets by email or something similar.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Europe has proper 2FA in the form of a dongle type device, and not this SMS BS many companies in the US use out of laziness. They also need to use this device for not just online banking, but basic everyday transactions.

RandomInteger4··on Exercise is good for boosting memory and thinking skills, new guidelines say
Yeah, I experience that same heat related exercise induced insomnia in the summer. Even in the summer though, I absolutely must have some blanket or something, or else I feel weird. Counter intuitively, I feel cooler wearing a shirt to bed in the summer as well, even with a blanket.

Right now though it's so cold where I live that I can just dress warm and cover up with the comforter, whilst saving money on heating.

RandomInteger4··on Exercise is good for boosting memory and thinking skills, new guidelines say
6-8 hours, depending on your body, unless people who say they're fine on 6 hours are just lying to themselves and others.

From what I've experienced, I think the time of day you go to bed matters as well, meaning even with a full fresh perfect feeling 8 hours, your body doesn't enter REM the same or produce the same amount of growth hormone or clean out the brain properly if you go to sleep everyday at say 6am vs sometime shortly after sun down. I guess it has to do with the light levels you experience.

RandomInteger4··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
On YouTube in particular, I'd be mostly fine with pre-roll ads if it weren't for those World of Tank ads above the recommended sidebar. Those ads slow my machine down to a crawl some times. No clue why they allow webgl animations in their ads.
RandomInteger4··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
Do you not know how to read? Unusable means not usable, as in dysfunctionally slow. Literally can not use the web in many instances.
RandomInteger4··on Many major websites are taking silent anti-ad-blocking measures
I use an ad blocker, because otherwise the web is unusable.

Maybe if (1) fewer ads pumped up CPU and memory usage for a page, and (2) companies didn't give their non-technical asshole free reign over placing scripts on the page, then maybe many of these sites wouldn't be so bad to visit without an ad blocker.

RandomInteger4··on Toilet Paper History: How America Convinced the World to Wipe (2009)
An abundance of anus hairs in my case. Top to bottom (back to front) aligns the hairs in such a way that they don't end up stuck in the anus hole, which I've experienced leading to itching and irritation. However, at least one front to back (bottom to top?) is mandatory in the middle of the loop for increased cleanliness, as either the skin folds or anus hairs obscure some fecal matter that the top to bottom (back to front) directionality doesn't pick up.
RandomInteger4··on Toilet Paper History: How America Convinced the World to Wipe (2009)
From reading through some of the comments I really have to ask, is wiping ones ass really that complicated?

Get some single ply (not the cheap shit in public bathrooms, which is often like 0.25 ply or whatever the fuck ... fucking wax paper or some shit), fold it sheet-over-sheet using 5 sheets (defined by the perforation) for the first wipe, use 4 or 5 sheets for the second wipe, then finish off with a third wipe at 4 sheets. A wipe is one iteration through the ass_wipe_process loop, which has 2-3 sub-wipes depending on how comfortable you feel folding in half the 4-5 sheet-over-sheet folded unit.

I'm a dude, so I wipe back to front the first few sub-wipes, with a front to back followed back a back to front mixed in there somewhere. The reason for this directionality has to do with the length of my anus hair, which depends on when I've groomed it. The longer the anus hair, the more likely a front to back sub-wipe will lead to anus hairs in the butthole, causing itching and irritation. For some reason this doesn't happen with the back to front sub-wipe, so that is mandatory after a front to back, in order to realign the anus hairs.

Pro-Tip: Only groom hair close to the anus, otherwise you might end up with an ass-cyst from sitting on a groomed region where the hair can't properly grow out due to the pressure from sitting. Generally there's less constipation after grooming as though the hairs themselves bind the anus closed or some shit.

I mean seriously, just fucking take this shit seriously and do it right so you don't end up with shit in your undies stinking up the place or spreading fecal matter all over the place, getting people sick.

RandomInteger4··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
Understood, and that's generally what I've been taking away from it, but I have a mind towards security and while I don't need to fully understand it to be a developer, I must understand it for my own purposes, as I would (1) feel completely ashamed of myself for blindly following tutorials, especially on this topic, and (2) would not want to adopt the liability that comes with implementing an insecure system for a client that has a bigger wallet than me and wants to crush me financially even further for making a mistake that harmed their customers or business. Is such a scenario likely? I don't know; doubtful, but still, I'd feel like an impostor.

Truthfully, the spec itself doesn't seem too difficult to understand; it's mostly my inability to stay focused that causes me the problems I deal with when studying and coding. Perhaps the true culprit of our times are browser tabs; the more I have open, the more overwhelming it becomes to consume them.

As for caffeine and anxiety it's better than the depression that I feel with a lack of caffeine. Caffeine also has a kind of analgesic effect, or rather maybe the lack of caffeine causes me to have more pain in my spine for some reason. Sleep isn't too difficult with chronic melatonin use. Your body never adapts to melatonin as with other substances, so you can maintain the same dose (5mg in my case) with consistent efficacy. I'm out within 30 minutes after taking melatonin.

RandomInteger4··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
No, actually it isn't, please go fuck yourself and your assumptions, jesus fucking christ. I've been interested in software development my whole adult life and have just had a series of unrecoverable bad decisions.

God, seriously, go fucking fuck yourself. It's so fucking insulting to have those kind of asinine assumptions thrown my way.

RandomInteger4··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
Danke. I'm cool for the most part right now. I've come to embrace my anxiety to an extent. If I'm able to type, then that means it's mostly not affecting me at the moment. Late night just has me feeling a lack of inhibition and dis-concern for my privacy on these matters.

As far as caffeine goes, I don't know what I'd do without it. Up until recently I was on 2 doses of 3 cups (measurement unit) of espresso per day, but I've realized that I needed to up the dosage, or at least the source. So I went down to 1 dose of 3 cups of espresso + 1 caffeine pill later on, 1 Monster Energy (lowest caffeine content of all my sources I believe), and 1 cup of green tea. This also has the side benefit of pain relief from the muscle tear issues.

As for software development, I'm in the process of learning the ins and outs of OAuth and OpenID Connect prior to implementing a sign up and login. Using Node, so it seems like there is a wealth of tutorials out there for passport, and apparently many of them are insecure (or so I've read), so I want to fully understand the concepts behind the most commonly accepted as secure protocols for Authorization and Authentication. Please correct me if I've said anything gibberish; still learning.

Politics? Que? I didn't mention anything political.
RandomInteger4··on Modern life is lonely – We all need someone to help
Best solution to loneliness is to gain massive debt, become dirt poor, and battle daily with attention deficit issues while you struggle to learn and become productive enough to get a job in the software industry with a pretty horrible work history, an incomplete bachelors, and a near worthless associates.

Living one rung lower on Maslow's hierarchy makes you forget about the desire to be around people, or even leave the house (father's) all that often (2% of the time).

Granted, I think maybe my concern for my health (irrational or not) has been exacerbated, so I've traded loneliness for frequent panic attacks concerning whether or not I might have cancer or a heart defect. On the plus side, I know for a fact that I've torn back muscles weight lifting, so all I really need is the medicaid office to get back to me after submitting my 4th application with no phone calls or emails as to my status.

RandomInteger4··on US prosecutors move to cash in on $8.5M in seized Bitcoin
Hypothetically, assuming he did contest the sale and Bitcoin went up, they would have to give him back the amount of bitcoin that they sold, since technically Bitcoin is an asset and not a currency in the eyes of the government, correct?

EDIT: Also student loan debt ...

The ability to take a diverse sample from their interviewee pool and not just take the top 10 perfect looking resumes from recruiters for people they choose to spend time interviewing.

So many diamond-in-the-rough developers out there that would make good team members, but simply lack prestigious resumes or failed to put skill points in "Job Search" or attribute points in Charisma.

RandomInteger4··on The FCC Still Doesn’t Know How the Internet Works
Isn't that a rather pedantic swipe? How many machines do you know which are still big-endian?

DNS resolution is done by your operating system; just because ISPs provide DNS servers doesn't mean that's a service they're solely responsible for considering you can switch DNS servers at any time, with the exception of ISPs who wrongly prohibit such things. In many cases DNS resolution is sped up by changing DNS servers; weird that eh?

It's a signal. Signals are important even if futile. Without such signals, we can only make assumptions concerning where the minority party stands on whichever issue.
