Learning and desperately trying not to forget much of it ...

RandomInteger4··on JavaScript Fatigue or My History with Web Development
Ask your boss if you can get a promotion / raise and if they deny you that, then ask if at the very least you can have a new title, then use that on your resume for your next job.

Pretty neat, but would be even nicer if display of the points could be turned off, so that you could see just the resulting shapes, especially with the motion feature.

RandomInteger4··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
Then I would get the call no? VM isn't the problem. The problem is the ringing.
RandomInteger4··on You can probably use deep learning even if you don't have a lot of data
It might be that people want to learn to use deep learning, but they find the NIST AND other sets boring and want to learn on a problem they find interesting, but still produce something that seems to work.

Plus, learning to learn how to learn on less can only help the field of learning. That's the goal of one shot learning right?

RandomInteger4··on The Wonderful WiFi232: BBSing Has Never Been Easier
This site could do with a responsive redesign.

EDIT: Redesign is the wrong term, as that implies that it would take any effort at all.

RandomInteger4··on Ringless voice mails from telemarketers
In a way, this is a huge relief. I never listen to voice mails, so not having to be bothered by my phone ringing for something unimportant saves me a bit of time and anxiety.

Now I just have to worry about people I know, phone interviews, and debt collectors (who seem to be harassing me less often via phone these days).

RandomInteger4··on How to Sleep
For the most part, my diet is generally on the healthy-ish side; brown rice, beans, eggs, protein shakes with lactose-free milk, oats, cocoa powder, and activia.

Veggies include onions, carrots, cabbage, split peas, lentils, and broccoli / collard greens.

Also natural peanut butter and sunflower seeds to varying degrees.

RandomInteger4··on How to Sleep
For caffeine, I'm probably consuming way too much. I use french roast (less caffeine + less acid) with an espresso machine (course grind folgers rather than fine grind). I think it comes out to roughly slightly less than 1.5 cups (12 fluid ounces) per dose.

I take a dose within about 1 - 1.5 hours of waking up and another dose half way through the day. I need to start taking the second dose earlier so 1) I don't experience the mid day crash and 2) there's less in my system when I go to bed.

For melatonin I take 3mg about an hour or two before going to bed and another 3mg right before going to bed. Sleep is generally good, but not as much as I would like, which I think is partly due to going to bed too late, thus light entering my room due to insufficient window blackout methods.

Something weird I notice about melatonin is that it helps me get work done just before bed, because my mind thinks less about it and just does it, but this probably isn't the best way to work.

RandomInteger4··on Lessons I Learned from the Dotcom Bubble for the Coming Cryptocurrency Bubble
It depends on how big the derivatives market for cryptocurrencies is; i.e. how much is leveraged in bets related to cryptocurrencies.
RandomInteger4··on Lessons I Learned from the Dotcom Bubble for the Coming Cryptocurrency Bubble
Your statement indicates that you don't know what a pyramid scheme is, or that you do and you're expanding its definition to generalize its negative connotation to something else that doesn't fall under the proper definition of a pyramid scheme.

A company using credit card technology in combination with bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is simply leveraging existing technology interfaces for companies that want to accept cryptocurrency without said companies having to deal with alternative payment systems. The payment system handles everything related to the cryptocurrency and the payee simply sees the USD (or other fiat currency) value in their accounts.

The market cap doesn't take into account the cryptocurrency derivatives market.
RandomInteger4··on How to Sleep
Something along these lines I recommend is a loud HEPA filter fan, so you get fresh air + white noise.
RandomInteger4··on How to Sleep
I'm not sure what the long term effects of chronic melatonin supplementation are, but I'll find out eventually. I've been taking between 3-6mg of melatonin every night for the past few years (2011?) It's almost required. Without it my sleep cycle seems fine at first, but then gets out of whack as I can't seem to keep a circadian rhythm in line with the rest of society / the earth's rotation.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I can't function mentally without caffeine. I tried going off caffeine a few times, and while the withdrawal effects were horrible, they eventually passed and everything felt great except my ability to concentrate on anything. Sadly I can't afford to see a doctor for my ADHD meds. While caffeine helps, it still leaves much to be desired.

Exercise helps immensely, both in terms of sleep and ability to concentrate, but at some point I injured my upper back (rhomboids and rotator cuff muscles), so I can't get the same level of exercise I had before.

RandomInteger4··on How to Sleep
I've seen a good number of data points to the contrary in one particular situation. There was an article about a vibrator alarm clock promoting starting the day with an orgasm, and pretty much every women commenting on the article mentioned how stupid an idea that seemed because they said it would put them right back to sleep.
RandomInteger4··on How Sharing a Bed Changed My Sleep
I'm 31 and I've never had a partner, but every time I've had sex, the experience of sleep (or lack thereof) that follows fills me with dread concerning what life will be like in a relationship.

RandomInteger4··on Coinbase adds support for Litecoin
World tensions are high. Apparently whenever there's bad news, the cryptocurrencies spike? It's kind of like a safety net similar to gold.

The current thing driving it might be a combination of factors, among which is the North Korea situation with chinese investors moving funds into cryptcurrencies?

RandomInteger4··on Universities finally realize that Java is a bad intro programming language
How would I be joking? Do you even program with JS or are you basing your opinions on hearsay and a bad introduction you had one time in the past and haven't looked at it since?

Last I checked, Javascript is Turing Complete and has most of the common features you'd find in every other language. Just because it doesn't have OS interaction on the browser side doesn't mean it isn't a general purpose language. Have you ever even heard of Node.js? Have you not seen the wealth of great things implemented in Javascript?

Where does your claim that Javascript is not a general purpose programming language come from is what I'm asking. I can't seem to grok how one could come to that conclusion, which is why your comment doesn't make sense.

Don't get me wrong, Python is a great language as well, but outside of a slightly more preferable syntax, I don't see why you seem to think Javascript is such a bad language.

Javascript (in Node.js 7.9.0) even seems to have better benchmarks performance than Python 3.6.1 [1]

Please elaborate rather than making snide replies.

RandomInteger4··on Universities finally realize that Java is a bad intro programming language
Javascript is a general purpose programming language and your comment doesn't make any sense.
RandomInteger4··on Universities finally realize that Java is a bad intro programming language
As a beginner in java, you really just need java, javac and a text editor. The problem is less the ecosystem and more just the language isn't a good starting point for a beginning programmer in a formal education setting.

RandomInteger4··on In response to “Electron is flash for the desktop”
This is something so obvious that it doesn't need a citation, but I think it's misunderstood.

It doesn't mean that the quality of the product decreases, but that the average quality of whatever is made with the product decreases from a user's perspective.

Just take a look at WordPress; I'm going to assume that over time the product itself has gotten more secure and usable due to more eyes being on it and it's adoption rate increasing, but being secure in itself doesn't mean that it can't be used insecurely.

On the plus side, it's responsive, so there's that I suppose.

The thing that bothers me most is that near the top, the header title isn't aligned with the first section title. Not so much a design thing I guess, so much as it's just something that makes my eye twitch ...
