RandomInteger4··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
Lootboxes aren't a form of dishonesty. It's a form of gambling. Gambling needs to be regulated, because that specifically does abuse psychology, whereas when you're buying a product, you know exactly what you're getting. There's no deception there, unless there is, in which case we have laws against it, because it's called false advertisement. We have laws against gambling, because we know how math works and the human mind doesn't by default.

Are they harming you buy talking about this frequently? If not, then who cares? It's their personal quirk. Play along. Let them own this one thing that they have to talk about. Maybe they're insecure and not good with social interaction, but they feel like they have to talk about something.

If you're honestly annoyed by it, then complaining on some random internet forum about it isn't going to fix the situation. Confront the person and tell them directly that they need to find new experiences to talk about or that it's getting on your colleague's nerves.

Stop being a coward around your coworkers.

Citing human psychology is a sad excuse to excuse one's self from personal responsibility. You are the final arbiter of all decisions that you make. Nobody else. You are the one that is ultimately responsible.

If this were loot boxes, then maybe we'd be having a different discussion, but unless they're tricking you into something other than what is advertised, then the onus ultimately falls upon you to control your desire to purchase something.

Forcing them to cross deserts while sick with no food or water?

Oh, wait, no, that's what their traffickers from Honduras and elsewhere are doing as they claim that those children belong to them when they reach the border so that they can receive higher priority treatment, whereupon they enter and recycle the kids back across the border.

Those statements say nothing about the product they're selling to you.
RandomInteger4··on How e-commerce sites manipulate people into buying things
There goes that nasty evil capitalism, "It wasn't my lack of will power and cognitive short falls that caused me to buy these things ... it was capitalism's fault. I'm completely innocent and would never make bad decisions of my own accord ..."

Balding and hair length are unrelated.
RandomInteger4··on Slack Wants to Replace Email. Is That What We Want?
How easy is it via email to contact a person outside of your company? Do people actually answer emails from random strangers? Seems like an easy way to become a phishing or social engineering victim.
RandomInteger4··on Slack Wants to Replace Email. Is That What We Want?
What are the upsides of email? Spam?
RandomInteger4··on Ask HN: How would you teach teens to code in 2019?
While I agree to a certain extent with the point you made in your first paragraph, I'm not sure why you doubt quoted coding with regard to Minecraft and Roblox. Both games have Turing complete languages. Roblox uses Lua.

Minecraft uses javascript on Bedrock, but also has a command block scripting language along with redstone, which together form a unique and mentally stimulating coding environment.

This isn't even mentioning mods which add different languages (Forth or Lua) or modding the game itself, which isn't that difficult to stumble into these days.

Better yet, why not just scrap the whole system and implement IP addresses and security certificates for the phone system. We seemed to have already solved pretty much every analogous situation there that the phone system is dealing with.
RandomInteger4··on When we work out rigorously, our bodies limit our ability to expend energy
No, complete opposite. I lose weight (muscle glycogen probably) when I miss workouts, because my appetite decreases significantly.

RandomInteger4··on Student Loan Debt Crisis Is Bankrupting Millennials
Why do you people always assume that the degree we chose to pursue was useless? I chose to pursue Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. I had to leave school prior to completion due to financial circumstances beyond my control at that time and have been unable to get my foot in the door without a degree since then.
RandomInteger4··on Student Loan Debt Crisis Is Bankrupting Millennials
"Student Loan Debt Crisis is Bankrupting Millenials"

Technically incorrect, since we legally can't file for bankruptcy on this debt except under very particular circumstances.

Fabric bags are worse for the environment than plastic bags, so they cost more, because of the process to make them.
RandomInteger4··on Is it time to treat sugar like smoking?
No, it's not. This is ridiculous.

Sugar is bad in large quantities, but there's no such thing as second hand sugar consumption, which is the main reason why anybody wanted to regulate smoking, since nobody wants to get lung cancer from working in a place where everyone else is doing something harmful.

What we need to do with regard to sugar is get people to have some got dang self control, which starts with proper education K-12 and decent menus for school lunches.

RandomInteger4··on The Business of Health Care Depends on Exploiting Doctors and Nurses
That's not exploitation. Exploitation is the admin side doing great and still demanding long hours and minimal staff.
RandomInteger4··on The Business of Health Care Depends on Exploiting Doctors and Nurses
I completely agree to be honest, but it seems like when you see Doctors and nurses complaining on social media, it's almost like they do it as a badge of honor and not because they actually want fewer hours, given the implications that come with fewer hours (i.e. lower salaries).

That's assuming hospitals are actually operating on a tiny profit margin, but if the margin is huge, then there should be more demands. I mean, there's the nurses union at least, but what about the doctors, or the various technicians.

Either way though, the system is still broken with respect to how much the patients have to pay.

RandomInteger4··on The Business of Health Care Depends on Exploiting Doctors and Nurses
Does it though? Given how much they charge, does it really depend on exploiting those folks? Are they really being exploited given how high their salaries are?

Like, just for patient safety, I agree, these folks should not be working the ridiculous hours they work, but would they really agree to that if it meant a salary decrease?

RandomInteger4··on The Science Behind Why Some Are Shy
> ... put their foot in their mouths ...

Sounds mighty judgmental rather than empathetic if you ask me.

RandomInteger4··on The Science Behind Why Some Are Shy
It is something that you have control over though. Unlike an amputated arm, you have the ability to make a choice to eschew shyness in favor of some outgoing mode of interaction. It's not going to be pleasant initially if you're not used to it, but you still have the choice to take that action. You might even choke up due to a nervous system response that actually is out of your control, but that response can be dampened with practice.

I say this as someone who generally has difficulty socializing, but I try regardless. It gets easier.
