ResearchCode··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you deal with socials, blogging, etc
If that looks "suspicious" to an employer, you don't want to work there.

Say no and find a better job if your manager doesn't like it.
ResearchCode··on Shopify tells employees to just say no to meetings
But a project is. Get rid of the sprints.
ResearchCode··on Shopify tells employees to just say no to meetings
Scrum is kind of a big red flag these days. One technical status meeting a week is plenty (as you'd have pursuing a PhD).
ResearchCode··on Shopify tells employees to just say no to meetings
Just get rid of the "sprints".
ResearchCode··on Deep work. Essentialism in asynchronous culture
Daily "check ins" is way excessive. One status meeting a week is plenty.

If they're also should-you-be-fired-today interrogations, then it appears that the organizations real problem is toxicity.

ResearchCode··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
It's maybe a marker of the (western) petit bourgeois. Upper class put up with it less.
ResearchCode··on “Laws” of software estimation for complex work (2021)
Software estimation doesn't work for non-trivial tasks (and trivial ones should be automated, making them non-trivial).

It's like asking a mathematician to "estimate" how long that theorem is going to take to get proven.

ResearchCode··on As unions decline, inequality rises
"Yah". Few generations ago, you could buy property cash in a "NIMBY hellhole", that is a place where you can find gainful employment, on a few years worth of savings. Not the case anymore. Property prices inflated much more than CPI.
ResearchCode··on As unions decline, inequality rises
Compare to 30 years ago instead. Wealth in terms of being able to buy property is decreasing in many countries, which can be more significant than any increased ability to buy consumer gadgets (that will spy on you). And the countries with less wealth inequality don't in principle have less wealthy common people.
ResearchCode··on Peter Norvig critically reviews AlphaCode’s code quality
What other profession? When and if it can actually write code, making a ppt or sitting in a pointless meeting is a long solved problem.
ResearchCode··on Ask HN: Will AI put programmers our of work?
It will put everyone else producing ppts and excel sheets out of work first.
ResearchCode··on Ask HN: Will AI put programmers our of work?
Then we'd automate the non-programmer first.
ResearchCode··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
Sure, show me the two-day course I can take that enables me to work in a hospital micro-managing the doctors.
ResearchCode··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
Software engineers already automated that. We know if the server is down.
ResearchCode··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
Daily interrogations by someone who finished a two-day "agile" course. Doctors don't have to put up with this. Or you could always get a better job that doesn't do "standups".
ResearchCode··on 83% of Developers Suffer from Burnout, Haystack Analytics Study Finds
Forced full-time "pair programming" might by itself cause burnout in a lot of people.

I wonder how many mathematicians would put up with something like that. Full-time pair proving.

ResearchCode··on Ask HN: Again: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma
Also known as a to-do list outside of Japan. It's a valid tool, mostly unlike the corporate agile insanity that often comes with it.

ResearchCode··on Programmers should plan for lower pay (2019)
In 2015, fully autonomous driving was a year away. We will see. Though I don't mind copilot automating simpler plumbing tasks personally. To replace human programmers, it'd have to replace mathematicians first.
ResearchCode··on Programmers should plan for lower pay (2019)
Copilot hardly replaces a human. It might replace making a Github search manually.
ResearchCode··on The SAFe Delusion
Imagine taking a two day course and then going into the office of a law firm or a hospital and micromanaging the staff. Tragic that software engineers put up with this.
ResearchCode··on The SAFe Delusion
Are employees looking for "agile" companies? Seems more like a red flag for micromanagement nowadays.
ResearchCode··on The SAFe Delusion
How does SAFe reliably identify "low performers"? Top companies tend not to do SAFe, I don't see the issue this solves. But I'd easily see SAFe creating low performers.
ResearchCode··on I Am a Programmer – No, I Don't Want to Be a Team Player
> at the standup

"Standups" are micromanagement. Which other high level profession does this. Doctors are not interrogated daily by some charlatan with a certificate for a 2 day course. PhD programs in CS/Maths tend not to do "standups". Asynchronous communication could replace most meetings at your regular CRUD sweatshop anyway.

ResearchCode··on I Am a Programmer – No, I Don't Want to Be a Team Player
You should ask (and preferably asynchronously, not by having random long meetings). Spending 7-8 hours working out a solution is however normal (on working with actual complex systems, like during a PhD, you might go a week between meetings but varies according to actual needs).

You seem to be describing micromanagement.

ResearchCode··on Manager's Handbook (2020)
There's nothing rude about non-video calls. They are frequently carried out between heads of state or royalty, that is at the highest level of politeness.

If people are disinterested, you might want to invite less people to your meeting or use email.

ResearchCode··on My take on Elon's offer for Twitter
Sure there is. On your theme, say Woody Allen.
