ResearchCode··on Financial literacy is a passport to financial freedom
I don't think those groups smoke less than the majority population. Perhaps more.
ResearchCode··on Rejected internal job applicants are twice as likely to quit
And full-on nepotism is known to be bad. My bet is that blind recruits would perform just as well or better as the family and friends of the recruiting manager would if you'd run the experiment.
ResearchCode··on John Steinbeck’s estate urged to let the world read his shunned werewolf novel
Societies with high human capital respect the dead and won't seize upon the first opportunity to rob their graves (rationalizing as "learning" or whatever doesn't cut it). There's plenty of other material that was willfully published to learn from.
ResearchCode··on Belarus 'diverts Ryanair flight to arrest journalist', opposition says
Not really. US using implicit financial coercion is no better than Belarus using their air-force. Clearly a larger display of corruption.
ResearchCode··on National hiring experiments reveal 2:1 preference for women on STEM tenure track (2015)
The thing is, if you instead did that the management would be more likely to pick up on the distastefulness and pass you over.

"Playing the game" appears to be a rationalization of favoritism. The game is rigged in favor of some people for whom "playing the game" is much easier due to socioeconomic background / ethnicity etc (which are the actual explaining factors for material success).

ResearchCode··on Microsoft Investigated Bill Gates Before He Left the Board (Report)
The anti-competitive behavior, surveillance capitalism, oligarch moves didn't tip you off?
ResearchCode··on Donation page "not compliant with Google Play Policies"
Don't think their infrastructure would cost 30% without their duopoly, e.g. ten non-colluding platforms of equal market share and abiding by interoperability regulations. 5% and no draconian content policy enforcement?
ResearchCode··on Elon Musk’s anti-union tweet from 2018 must be deleted: U.S. labor board
Your power in society is zero sum. Giving it all away to an oligarch in exchange for promises of cheap consumer goods is not an credible bargain.
ResearchCode··on What does any of this have to do with physics? (2016)
Late exposure to higher mathematics sounds perfectly plausible. Someone getting into sports at 15 is rarely going to compete with those that started at 10, assuming equal innate talent. The same principle applies to academics.

Would be nice to see some envelope math on the respective importance of IQ and socioeconomic background/nepotism in academia (many PhDs have parents with PhDs etc).

ResearchCode··on The technical interview practice gap
Yes, management consulting at the local offices of the "big 4". Starting comp in MC something like 60k/yr (whereas IB is double).

More high end opportunities than other career paths certainly, but it's much less top heavy. 7 figure income, a few CEOs make it but not common.

Kind of make sense though if local offices adopt some of the same rhetoric and marketing (elite selectivity etc) as the US head offices but with really different market conditions.

ResearchCode··on The technical interview practice gap
I keep hearing this but in my country iẗ́s just not true. Yes you needed to go to the right school (most difficult part but not difficult) an maintain a 3.5 (what they advertised) or even a 3.0 GPA (what they ended up accepting) and join a few student clubs (which nobody really cared about).

Maybe the bar is higher in the US.

ResearchCode··on Agent fired from literary agency for using Parler and Gab
Not in countries with functioning labor law.
ResearchCode··on New Intel CEO rehiring retired CPU architects
Stronger socioeconomic background, as with any success.
ResearchCode··on Local rules instead of global censorship
Not having some of the largest wealth inequality in the world (look it up).
ResearchCode··on Earnestness
I thought it was about becoming the next Steve Jobs, as in billionaire founder. They tend to grow up with great privilege. Evidently there are great obstacles for the middle class, such as favoritism for the already affluent. As in any country, it has little to with actual capability.

Surely Venezuela could have less social mobility, but it isn't actually that great in the west.

ResearchCode··on Daniel Ek commits to investing €1B in European ”moonshots”
Might have to pay "talent" more than $40k a year before aiming for the moon.
ResearchCode··on Assange Hearing Day 8
No normal person is investigated like that. Why make things up? Spending tens of millions on case of violating the ... Bail Act of 1976? It's obvious political persecution.

Dodging jurisprudence, that's rich. His Swedish accusers were not even investigated for blatant evidence tampering.

An equivalent claim could also be that some collection of 3-line Python scripts is among the most important accomplishments in computer science and engineering. Being clearly trivial, it probably isn't that great.

So another possibility is that there indeed is such a thing as an emperor without clothes, and he might show up in abstract art.
