RubyPinch··on Hyper – A terminal emulator based on JavaScript, HTML and CSS
TermKit's last update was late 2011 with the following line in it's readme

    Warning: Alpha version, still under development. Nothing works yet.
Maybe if it was built on powershell (or on its own underlying system) it would have more hope, but *nix is far too heavily text centric

notty seems to be trying to push that text-centricness as far as possible however

RubyPinch··on Dear FetLife (And Other Kinky People)
I got that read via "[...] you probably deserve to lose access to FetLife.", "everything you do is a political act", "everything you do is a political act in bold", "You are saying 'please eradicate kink and make me unemployed'". etc etc.

Its shaming, forceful, and trying to use negative emotions (fear specifically imo) as a call to action.

I am not commenting on if the justifications are valid or not, just the tone.

I think aggressive, passionate calls to action are pretty great! However I don't feel that being a downer is the best addition to a call to action!.

Political inaction might very well be shameful, however it doesn't mean that shame must be seen as a point to capitalize on like that.

RubyPinch··on Dear FetLife (And Other Kinky People)
For a community that is supposed to be positive, respectful, n' the like...

This article kinda really really reeks of shaming and negativity.

And its got a bit of a forceful tone as well (your inaction makes it your fault! you are telling the big baddy trump that you want to have your stuff closed down, good work!).

I really don't see this being a practical or effective call to action. Encouraging people to speak up about something seen as shameful, seems more useful than shaming people to speak up about something seen as shameful.

RubyPinch··on Astronaut – YouTube videos with almost zero previous views
Short view times (e.g. opening a video, watching X seconds of it, thinking its going to be boring, and switching away from it) actually count as a negative in terms of youtube's internal rankings

(though this is just what I remember from a pewdiepie video on the topic, I may or may not be remembering correctly)

RubyPinch··on Alphabet Says It Shut Down Titan Drone Internet Project
My favorite feature of reader was:

You go and add a feed, and then you don't just get the latest 20 posts. Instead you get all the posts since the beginning of the feed, since google saw it then during a crawl and decided to watch it ever since.

That is something that is a fair bit harder to provide by any competitors

RubyPinch··on Reasons not to use Skype (2012)
Via your mouth (for phones) or your browser (for the internet), you can control what information you give/send properly.

If you have code executing on your machine, you can not control what information that code will take (unless you know that it is 100% safely sandboxed)

And AFAIK, Stallman doesn't spend a lot of time "directly" connected to the wide web, as tracking leads to forcing the user to give information they don't want to give (short random distinct interactions with the internet are fine, as long as they are short enough to not allow for inferences to be made)

RubyPinch··on Internet Archive’s Trump Archive Launches Today
I completely agree with that.

However, I do think the current situation is valuable regardless. As long as we have some people on each side, doing whatever they can to attack their enemies with truth.

It might not inform us of how great each candidate is, but will give us a pretty good idea of how bad each candidate is.

- - -

Non-partisan truth finders are obviously better, but only if they are actually non-partisan! People who control the truth without making it obvious they do, I'd find more concerning!

RubyPinch··on Internet Archive’s Trump Archive Launches Today
Its quite interesting

Anti-Hillary has gone about leaking private correspondence and documents to "attack" her

Anti-Trump (which I'm considering Archive to be, considering their prior reactions), has gone about collecting and documenting public data to "attack" him.

As a nice side-effect, it does mean that (for the most part) truth is being used as the weapon of choice, which I think is pretty great. I hope the act of publishing truth as a political tactic becomes more of a thing over time, even if partisan.

RubyPinch··on Goodbye to GNU Libreboot
more near a 10th of the story

Neither side wants to put up any substantial verifiable information about it, so there is nothing to talk about on that front.

RubyPinch··on HDMI 2.1 Announced: 10Kp120, Dynamic HDR, New Color Spaces, New 48G Cable
mirroring what the other person said, its more useful for anything which isn't video

A good example to consider is mobile phones and how sharp and precise the UI can be, with lines almost at hair thickness. Anti-aliasing is almost useless on phones already, and its all due to their pixel densities.

(of course, not so useful for 60" screens!)

RubyPinch··on Kaspersky: SSL interception differentiates certificates with a 32bit hash
Its not a mistake or a vulnerability either.

Incorrect cache hits are fine, as long as there is some checking following the cache hit

    hash(A) == hash(B) && A == B
> I wasn't aware they were checking the commonName sent with SNI.

If I'm not mistaken, it does sound like they were doing some checking after they pulled the generated cert from cache, but it obviously wasn't enough checking

RubyPinch··on Baidu and KFC’s new smart restaurant suggests what to order based on your face
That is a bit unimpressive, right?

They could just randomly pick anything from the menu, and say it was because of the scan, and it would still have the same PR effect, wouldn't it? (since no one would suspect it of getting it perfectly right in the first place)

RubyPinch··on Ruby 2.4.0 Released
I'm pretty sure that is a mirror

https://www.ruby-lang.org/en/community/ruby-core/ suggests that the main repo is a self-hosted SVN

RubyPinch··on Ruby 2.4.0 Released
Just with the python/ruby comparison

I kinda feel like the reason for that is more due to the fact that if python users want change in their language, they really need to either construct their own pre-parser and deal with a lot of potential issues, or post a change, hope it becomes a PEP, and hope it gets accepted. There is very little ways other than that

In ruby, you are enabled to fix so much more of the language to your own liking, so there is much less of a need for the main language to change.

I'm not saying that ruby isn't underfunded, just that it doesn't need to grow as fast as python does

RubyPinch··on Maya – Python Datetimes for Humans
probably would be easier to hide it away in a small class with `__contains__`

    event_datetime in daterange(timedelta(hours=1), before=datetime.now())
RubyPinch··on Maya – Python Datetimes for Humans

    <MayaDT epoch=1481850660.9>
not the most human readable is it?

I guess it would help with like, "X happened before Y" situations, but I don't think I'd trust my eyes for that!

I think I would of preferred the "this happened in X month" case instead, I find it easier to trust my eyes for that, instead of trying to look for differing digits!

RubyPinch··on Using iframes and document.write to improve navigation performance
well, blockquote, ol, ul, aside, etc etc, are all flows, and as such are not permitted inside of p, which can only have phrasing content

right?

RubyPinch··on [dead]

> not so fast, the spec is still very much work in progress, lots of holes in there... but it's a start, I've put quite some effort in it the past few days

So the title might be worth changing?

RubyPinch··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him

I know its considered wrong to mess around with the structure, but this is reversible, looks neater, n' can be hidden (after verification) by third party tools with a simple "is this PGP-like, if yes, delete element" instead of mucking around, splitting arbitrary html

RubyPinch··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
I do think relegating it to

    ${message}

        ${message sig metadata}
        ${message sig}
could be done easily enough, and would look okay too. and then allow people to install an extension to verify automatically or the such
RubyPinch··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him

RubyPinch··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
Its in the link, isn't it?

> As much as we try to maintain a good relationship with you all, it does get old getting called a pedophile constantly.

constant fighting and complaining with other subs as well (which normally they would just shut down, but (un)fortunately, the r/the_donald mods are doing all they can do prevent that being needed, so its a constant minor (but active) problem, instead of being a large one-time problem that they can just ban)

Its the whole concept of poisoning the well, you have some people acting bad, and then the other people act bad in return, and then everyone watching just feels bad for watching it, and it makes everyone feel shit

RubyPinch··on Reddit CEO admits to altering user comments that were critical of him
there is already a system in place to have verified comments

should people have freedom to drive however they want, on roads used by plenty of other people too?

that seems like a good way to increase road fatalities

RubyPinch··on Do not change Linux files using Windows apps and tools
the system attribute is that better defense, changing explorer's options to display such files results in the following warning

RubyPinch··on Reasons not to use Uber
I think it'd be a mix of a couple things, it keeps things lighthearted for him, and it allows him to not have to keep typing out the name of something he dislikes very much.

He ain't writing strict legal discourse, he's writing out his own feelings in the way he feels most enjoyable. Personally I respect that.

For myself: I don't like using words like f*, and I prefer to censor them if I do use them, and I'd rather call someone a goob, instead of an idiot or a moron. My intent isn't to be mean!
