RubyPinch··on Google foobar
who knows what google might do with google's information.
RubyPinch··on Some thoughts on asynchronous Python API design in a post-async/await world
> On a real computer, my X1 Carbon Gen4, I can create and join over 110,000 threads per second.

is that C, or python's multithreading?

RubyPinch··on Time to Dump Time Zones
at a guess, its kinda the key size for hours

12/2=6, 12/3=4 work well, (with /4 and /6 being repeats of those)

24 hours doesn't add much on top of those divisions (you get /4 with a repeating /6 I guess)

RubyPinch··on Why I won't recommend Signal anymore
are you part of that knife fight? calling the article writer a hipster in this comment, and what seems to amount to "It's not wrong to criticize Signal. but don't because telegram is worse and more likely to win" in your other comment (since they arn't asking for libresignal to take over, just for a decent alternative to exist which currently probably does not)

It seems a really strong and a bit aggressive of an attitude to have against a person's opinions

RubyPinch··on Switching from macOS: The Basics
For me it feels a bit different

I can throw $XX at a linux distro, pray that it goes to the right things and gets improved proper, and then wait until it becomes good, or I could throw $XX at a closed source solution, and have something that works good right now.

Its all fine to donate $XX, but buying for $XX to get something significantly worse than its competitors is a bit weird, and can only really be justified through "I support free software even if it has binary blobs", which is still a bit weird

RubyPinch··on Am I wrong in hating React JS?
> at the time, if I had asked you if those were a fad

I still wouldn't call jquery a fad, just obsolete

RubyPinch··on Applying the Linus Torvalds “Good Taste” Coding Requirement
> it's just hiding the complexity in syntactic sugar.

And that complexity is only written once, instead of multiple times for a single project

You can have as many FOR and IF branches that you want, but only if they are all bugless!

RubyPinch··on A Quick Logic Lesson for Confused WikiLeaks Haters
So much passive aggressiveness at the start and end of the article that anyone sent this would roll their eyes and close it.

So who did the author write it for? Themself?

RubyPinch··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
https://i.imgur.com/SCxAk0V.png is what I get if I try to add two fac to my account, doesn't seem to be any way around it
RubyPinch··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
2FA requires a phone number (for google accounts)
RubyPinch··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
>You can get someone via IM almost instantly and they also offer phone/email support. As a Fi customer, that would be my first stop if I was locked out.

if you were locked out of your phone (plan) & email, would you be able to contact them?

RubyPinch··on Google Pixel: the Android iPhone you've been waiting for
Honestly I'd imagine its more of an issue of, with encrypt then send, the only way you can browse your remote files, is to download them and then decrypt them

so that means no browsing thumbnails of what could be a large collection, no viewing dates or other information on those files (since that is information leaked).

the only real way is to cache all that information on each device that would want to access those photos, which is doable, but it would feel a bit awkward, especially if sharing any of the data with other devices

RubyPinch··on Show HN: CSS ICON, an icon set crafted by pure CSS
https://codepen.io/anon/pen/xEykRg?editors=1100 in retrospect probably not a complete solution in of itself, but if doing the top 3 borders, with a :after with a gradient background image, should work for all colors
RubyPinch··on Show HN: CSS ICON, an icon set crafted by pure CSS
its mostly pretty avoidable, border-image with a gradient solves it a majority of the time
RubyPinch··on Show HN: CSS ICON, an icon set crafted by pure CSS
by my opinion

if you want something found on a CDN and as a result more likely cached in browsers (or pre-loaded via an extension), font awesome is a safe bet

If you want the most pure option, SVG (hint, change the background of the css icon boxes to see why, the usage of background-colored boxes everywhere is pretty damaging if you want to use it on anything other than flat colors)

if you want the icon to interact with your content (want text in a speech bubble? changing numbers? etc?) or to be quickly tailorable, then probably CSS icons

RubyPinch··on GitHub censored my research data
I don't believe that gitlab's offered service is "DDoS Protection"
RubyPinch··on GitHub censored my research data
a lot of non-normal consumers can end up making a lot of noise, sometimes its enough to cause change to happen

as was noted, 600 sites have already cleaned up their act

> Update Oct 14: 631 stores have been fixed, good work everybody!

So is it really as useless as you claim?

RubyPinch··on GitHub censored my research data
I think responsible disclosure would be to the people who would most be affected

businesses who have insurance for things like this, and possibly have software to reduce any issues that they would be directly affected by

or users who could lose a significant (and damaging) amount of money if they arn't careful with checking their statements?

It seems silly to support the scammers in this case?

RubyPinch··on Static types in Python
I find it a bit easier to treat it as documentation, instead of literal types

mypy will then tell you if you used your documented code wrong, according to your documentation

also sum excludes summing of strings if I remember correctly, so its any object that has an __add__ and __radd__ and isn't a string or subclass of string. which is just a bit insane to try and express on one line!

RubyPinch··on Static types in Python
there is at least this, others might also exist https://pypi.python.org/pypi/sphinx-autodoc-annotation
RubyPinch··on Show HN: Forgiva – Never saves your passwords but regenerates them
assuming combined correctly

A( B( C(X) ) ), if A becomes broken in the future, its still

B( C(X) ), as opposed to just revealing X straight away

RubyPinch··on Show HN: Forgiva – Never saves your passwords but regenerates them
the salt gets changed

so, either password database + master password gets stolen, or salt database + master password gets stolen

RubyPinch··on Microsoft Delivers Another Broken Windows 10 Update
benefits such as spending hours trawling through forums trying to find out why stuff is broken with no answer, no matter what you type into a little text box?
RubyPinch··on UnGoogled Chromium: Chromium with enhanced privacy, control and transparency
Could probably make use of the .invalid TLD for this. Should definitely result in less confusion, and it provides something a bit more searchable if people are concerned

    - doubleclick([A-Za-z\-]*)\.net#60u613cl1c4\1.qjz9zk
    + doubleclick([A-Za-z\-]*)\.net#doubleclick\1.g.invalid

RubyPinch··on UnGoogled Chromium: Chromium with enhanced privacy, control and transparency
qutebrowser? its mainly hotkey centric (vim-ish specifically) but its pretty nice
RubyPinch··on UnGoogled Chromium: Chromium with enhanced privacy, control and transparency
well there was a privacy bait-and-switch with Allo, wasn't there?

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12547130

RubyPinch··on UnGoogled Chromium: Chromium with enhanced privacy, control and transparency
something seems off about that

Looking through the previous year's results, it doesn't seem like firefox has done especially poorly?

And as noted in https://redd.it/45epd7, firefox multiprocess is sandboxed, and it does have security features that other browsers don't have

so... IMO it doesn't seem like the reason given is quite genuine?

RubyPinch··on UnGoogled Chromium: Chromium with enhanced privacy, control and transparency
> even if you have JavaScript disabled, if it's embedded in the HTML code.

how so?

RubyPinch··on Linux RAID is different from Windows for sound technical and historical reasons
> The Linux RAID history is different because unlike Microsoft the decision was made to integrate software RAID properly with the OS.

Well there wasn't really a choice was there?

RubyPinch··on Startup School Livestream
Sometimes I wonder if the world from a startup's point of view is limited to America!

The stream is near unwatchable in Australia!

edit: even going as far as using mpv to help alleviate the issues, but stuff dropping still isn't helping!
