Run_DOS_Run··on The FBI Identified a Tor User
>I ran a tor webserver for discussing geopolitics with friends on a pi for a few months before finding it had been compromised.

Not the fault of Tor. HSDir nodes could snoop on announced v1 .onion adresses. This isn't the case anymore for Onion v2 addresses. But even if an attacker has the onion address of your webserver, he needs a way to compromise it.

Either through a vuln in your website or your webserver.

Run_DOS_Run··on The FBI Identified a Tor User
That's why Tor is communicating mostly over fixed-size cells with a fixed size of 514 bytes (or 512 if tor version < 4).

There is also random padding added to cells, so that the cell content is unpredictable.

Run_DOS_Run··on Giving Up on Privacy (2011)
>So if there was anything I was considering doing where if it became public I would be hurt, I wouldn't do it.

Sounds like a pretty boring life and you will miss pretty much chances in life and also would be a nightmare for every buddy who has a premium account on fetlife.

Privacy is hard to gain these days, but it's possible. Some private data is safed on small book, which is hidden under my floor and some on an older laptop with Qubes installed and internet is only accessed over Whonix VMs. (Depends on the threat scenario)

>I might as well take advantage of it by making things public on my own.

This is a great way to make yourself an easy target. There's a difference if big tech & three-letter agencies have access to your private data and being totally exposed on the internet for every identity thief and Kiwifarms-Stalker. You should share as less data as possible or create as much fake data as possible about yourself. Fake shedule, fake pictures with fake exif-data, fake friends, etc.

>location based restraining orders can be automatically checked (automatically alert the police if this person comes within X distance of this other person) then keeping locations secret may become unimportant

Except the stalker is smart enough to follow you outside a big city (or wearing a mask) where no cams are placed and doesn't use a tracking device like a Smartphone. Also a data leak of the position data will happen. Stalkers will use these data to track their victims even better.

>parents that worry that the foolish things their middle schoolers write on the internet might come back to haunt them. Right now, their concerns may be correct. Longer term, our society has some adjusting to do to a world where more information is public

No, there will be always more boring people than you, who do nothing of that. These people will be the fools who get hired in future and you have become more boring like them to compete on the job market. This means no porn, drugs and politically-incorrect jokes with to your friends and family.

I would rather be dead than live in a world where the most boring people judge the most intimate moments of my life.

Run_DOS_Run··on Python malware starting to employ anti-debug techniques
Is this really worth an article? The anti-debugging protection just stops executables using a list of hardcoded filenames (eg. Wireshark.exe).

This is neither interesting nor new and was already implemented 20 years ago by script kiddies.

What's next? A VBS Trojan that takes commands via Matrix instead of IRC?

Run_DOS_Run··on Just a bunch of idiots having fun: a photo history of the LAN party
LAN parties weren't amazing. They still are amazing. My friends and me still have LAN-parties the whole night on weekends. We play classic games like Warcraft, Starcraft, CS GO and 1.6, but also play "newer" (needs ro run on every machine) games like Borderlands.

My girlfriend also regulary have LAN-parties playing Stardew Valley with her friends all together in a room like in the good old times.

All of us are 20-30 years old. Some take their laptop with them, some their tower + keyboard and mouse. The only difference is that we can play over Wifi (still works better over LAN) and have fast Internet for all these annoying updates.

LAN-parties aren't a relic of the past. They are still totally awesome and no online-game can compete with good friends playing computer games all night. ;)

Run_DOS_Run··on Tell HN: Cloudflare Is Blocking Piped
CloudFlare again.. Offering their service to crime forums, credit card fraud shops and phishing websites, while making usage of Tor and VPNs nearly impossible or atleast a pain.

Coupled with the hypocrisy of an open web and freedom of speech, it makes CloudFlare arguably one of the worst threats to the web as we know it.

Whereas the freedom of speech ala Cloudflare stops as soon as it can generate cheap PR, because then a website is quickly blocked after a few media reports.. or in case of Piped as soon as the content mafia is complaining.

Run_DOS_Run··on Ask HN: What do you do for online privacy?
I take privacy pretty seriously and to protect my privacy I do the following: * Use GrapheneOS on my smartphone with nearly no third-party apps * Use a VPN, because I don't trust my ISP * Use NoScript & uBlock * Use several ProtonMail addresses I change on a regular basis and use one-way trash mails. I also try to be on as few services as possible. If an email is leaked (didn't happened yet) delete it and create a new one. * Use Qubes + Whonix with FDE on a seperate laptop for things, which should stay private. I classify every other data from other devices as public. * Regulary check my home network traffic on my firewall. Especially when I do nothing on my devices or got a new device. * Destroy every camera and microphone in devices which can only be bought "smart" like every new TV. * Be aware that if I use an online service my data gets collected and act like someone is looking over my shoulder. Its not so bad, if you are aware of that. * Glueing my finger domes on a regular basis * Scan my house regulary for new WIFI and bluetooth devices in range
Run_DOS_Run··on YouTube confirms that it has removed the “sort by oldest/newest” option
I use NewPipe daily. It works pretty stable and the developers are working on it very active. As soon as Youtube breaks it (once every 1-2 months), the developers release a new version mostly next day.
Run_DOS_Run··on Tell HN: Linode's Abuse form is absolute garbage
Piracy is the smallest problem of Cloudflare. I run multiple honeypots and trash mail addresses for collecting spam and phishing mails and there is a huge number of phishing and scam websites which are protected by CloudFlare.. but that's only a small part: I did some research and found many ponzi-shemes, markets for stolen CreditCards and general crime forums which are all protected by CloudFlare for months or even years.

CloudFlare is pretty much the worst company I can think of. Blocking harmless Tor and VPN users through unsolvable captchas on every website they "protect", while talking about an open Internet and freedom of speech. These hypocrites only block websites if they get some cheap PR, in reality they give a shit offering their services to criminals.
