Senior Web Developer or "Full stack developer" by today standards, better-know as the "unpopular opinion" on several threads.

The current state of web development makes me sad, mostly because it's all fault of all the die-hard javascript developers, you know what f*ck all javascript/ecmascript/typescript/node developers.

SadWebDeveloper··on Modern SPAs without bundlers, CDNs, or Node.js
> without bundlers, CDNs, or __NodeJS__

> When I need to add a dependency, I invoke download-package and then declare it in the import map. I like this setup because it feels like I’m only using the bits of the NodeJS ecosystem

Thats using node/npm but with extra steps...

Anyway kinda like the importmap thing, it would have been better if he didn't reference solidjs but thats life.

SadWebDeveloper··on Ask HN: DNS redundancy, how to do it right?
Are you getting "DDoS'ed" from the DNS Server or from the HTTP Server?

Usually the later is more common since DNS tends to be a quite robust software to handle some levels of heavy the traffic (and the protocol being _lighter_ than HTTP).

Anyway you should separate the DNS Server from the Web Server, for this particular case personally i recommend "DNS Cloud providers" like AWS Route 53, they give you by default 4 different geo-located points and provides an API if you want to fight back the DDoS'ers (by changing your DNS records to 127.0.0.1 or 255.255.255.255 for a short period of time), usually these solve the email issue.

As for the web server, this is tough a well placed DDoS won't be stopped even Cloudflare have been hit with huge attacks that they couldn't handle (despite what their PR department says, the fact that even a bigger network than Cloudflare like Akamai couldn't protect Brian Kerbs tells you a lot about how tough these space is), best way is null routing the bad actors and spreading different ways to access your services like asking customers to go to frontendXYZ.mydomain.tld.

SadWebDeveloper··on Tailwind is a leaky abstraction
"Tailwind is how _twitter_ Bootstrap was originally conceived"... Change my mind.

But eventually people started pushing their agendas into the code/styles and we end we a bloated solution that works for everyone except those that want things to go back to slim. If tailwind continues to please the crowd, it is going to get bloated just like every other major attempt to murder Bootstrap did: RIP UIkit, Bulma, Skeleton, etc.

SadWebDeveloper··on Is there too much CSS now?
This is half-empty vs half-full glass of water problem... let me explain.

CSS is bloated because it needs to be bloated, do you remember the days before CSS? no, well we use to relay a lot from the HTML Spec (thats why some ppl kept pushing for some weird things like xhtml), we had to put in the all the elements HTML all the styles for every element on the website (and it wasn't like today that you put style tag and of you go), we had specific pourpose html elements (marquee, center, etc) to do certain things and it was a mess, as soon as CSS was available every developer started demanding it, Microsoft/IE couldn't keep up with the other browsers so he delivered a half-assed implementation (because they were pushing for activex/com shenanigans), that's were the infamous "css hacks" were born, because every major browser were luring users with features that devs had to support if their website aimed to be worldwide accessible, m so old for this shit that i remember Opera being loud on the ACID thing, it even went to my school to promote the CSS level support.

Now lets get back to 2022, all browsers politically agree to implement the things everyone wants, there are still half-assed solutions and workarounds (for older browser support, mainly Sucksfari), but the browser wars are over the winner was webkit=>chromium, now we live in the post war era, nobody wants to touch anything old because it might break the internet (and start another browser support war), so they keep pushing for new things build on top of old things (thats why we have a confusing state of what is better flex vs grid or the fact that we still need a css reset) because some old website (facebook, google, microsoft, etc.) has a vote on the w3c/whatwg table.

The solution? you might not like... lets break the internet, start deprecating the things and start promoting the new ones. Lets get rid of Safari!

SadWebDeveloper··on Dotfile madness (2019)
You are not gonna like the solution to that problem: Windows Registry like configuration file.

Centralization solve the problem in this case but have the downside that the central configuration file will become bloated and requires more memory in the long run.

SadWebDeveloper··on Webalizer Demo (1999)
Why? GDPR only affects if you use the data for 3rd party market research, storing the data for your own debugging purposes is not covered in.
SadWebDeveloper··on Flyweight: An ORM for SQLite
Kinda prefer Prisma when working with js/node or ts /deno but might try it if i need something more lightweight than prisma for a new toy project.

As for the ORM debate, not applicable for SQLite but if m using a database with better support for stored procedures (like sql server, postgresql or oracle), i just prefer a minimal DAO or an ORM that just built from stored procedure calls.

Unfortunately sometimes, specially in a big diverse team we do prefer an ORM so devs focus on other things a let the DBA guys try to guess why my code calls select everytime it refers to "entries" object just to get one entry.

SadWebDeveloper··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
Recently took on the challenge on learning Hugo, its quick but his learning curve is high (compared against Jekyll and Gatsby), specially because the docs seems to be more curated towards content management and how to deal with markdown limitations rather than web/front-end design, therefore there is no tutorial hell for "how to design your own theme", you have to look at how others solve it to give you and idea and once you get a glimpse on how they do it, you can go fast without using shortcodes, partials and other "weird things hugo have".

Only thing i will change in Hugo is how unopiniated tries to be, it always has at least 3 to 4 ways to the same thing and configurate the same thing with json, toml, yaml, etc...

SadWebDeveloper··on Our screwdriver took three years [video]
Seems like the juicero for screwdrivers... over-engineered tool that without the "LTT" branding could probably sink in the stores.

Personally i like my tools rugged, kinda like Klein does it because "on the job" i tend to thrown them away either on purpose or by accident, this tool looks fragile, if little margins stuck the ratchet mechanism i can not wait what is going to happen when it suddenly falls from the 2nd floor while installing an Access Point or Security Camera.

SadWebDeveloper··on Gov.uk drops jQuery from their front end
When you are dealing with less than 5 "interactive things", jQuery is awesome... beyond that it might be better to consider a front-end framework.

Jr devs have the tendency then to discard jquery because "is old" not because it isn't working anymore.

SadWebDeveloper··on Use of Google Analytics declared illegal by French data protection authority
Here is another a privacy-first alternative that works with a cloud subscription: https://awstats.sourceforge.io/

If your needs exceed the data analyzed by it then you should consider rethinking your "analytics model".

SadWebDeveloper··on Zuckerberg wants to be the hero of the metaverse because Facebook is boring
299 for the basic module without battery packs that raises the costo to 400 and at reatail prices for the USA, outside the USA is hitting the 400 usd without the battery packs... it's still a really expensive device, the "metaverse" is going to be for the rich kids.
SadWebDeveloper··on Zuckerberg wants to be the hero of the metaverse because Facebook is boring
Everytime someone mentions VR, i got reminded of the same scene of hbo silicon valley sitcom on why VR tech won't work unless there is a significant breakthrough: It needs a 1000 usd dollars rig to run smoothly plus the VR equipment.

What facebook is doing is preparing for the inevitable... they are going to break his company for monopoly reasons, therefore he needs zuckerberg to be seen as the CEO of something else, kinda what google does with alphabet were the founders basically run alphabet and have someone else run google in case they need a someone to put the blame on why "google shows first the image of trump when searching for idiot".

SadWebDeveloper··on 1.1.1.1 for Families
This is really need awesome kinda like opendns.
SadWebDeveloper··on I was rejected by Codecademy three times, so I built my own
Oh nice fainlly a place to test my sandbox escapes... get ready to pwn!
SadWebDeveloper··on AWS is playing chess, Cloudflare is playing Go
Most ppl use CF for toy things they don't test if their infrastructure is reachable at all times, but CF fails a lot, at least twice a day.
SadWebDeveloper··on My framework for building side projects as a solo developer
Thank you!... m not the only one feeling this was BS rambling, that could probably be someone making an article out a twitter-thread.

Article felt pointless, maybe someone venting his frustration on how to pursue new things during or after a burnout.

Probably he needs a friend(s), at least a chocolate one (https://youtu.be/CISFw4o0j4U)

SadWebDeveloper··on Did iOS 15 kill Google AMP
You are looking at the problem from a developer perspective, not from a user/reader or content creator, your article just gives tops 1 paragraph to the issue at start talking about syntactic validation and micro-optimizations that the user/reader doesn't care. The point is we don't need AMP, we can deal with caches and the bullshit micro-optimizations ourself, ppl don't care if the page loads instantly or in 4s-6s, despite any claim Google does.
SadWebDeveloper··on Did iOS 15 kill Google AMP
That is exactly the type of example/article/blog OP didn't wanted, too technical, TC article is about AMP for email but first its describes what AMP is and does, why is bad and why google is pushing AMP for literally everything it can. It's less technical more down to in tone for less technical savvy readers.
SadWebDeveloper··on Did iOS 15 kill Google AMP
Techcrunch usually has this type of articles: https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/13/amp-for-email-is-a-terribl...

Since this is site is usually read by C-levels and some VC's, the language is less technical but somewhat editorialized.

Anyway AMP is bad because it proposes an Internet without the freedom to push dynamic content (JavaScript, webassembly, etc...), cached at "google servers" for fast delivery but with features specifically built so Google Analytics and others can keep working, it doesn't solve anything that a good css style wouldn't solve plus content creators lose control of their data.

SadWebDeveloper··on Reclaim Windows10
I like this one mostly clean code (a little repetitive with those disableXXX/enableXXX functions but not a mess of regedit commands), obviously not for the default choices with are kinda weird and old becase wifi sense has been removed since 1803 (afaicr) but its definitely a lot nicer.
SadWebDeveloper··on Reclaim Windows10
People have spoked with their wallets, they are starting to buy Apple because "its better, more easy than windows and has resale value" but the reality is that apple does the same or even worse than microsoft, the main difference is that in Windows there are still ways to disable this functionalities in Apple they are tightly integrated on the macOS and can't even disabled without crippling your user experience.
SadWebDeveloper··on WordPress 18
Stop using shady shared hosting companies, self-host everything and harden php/apache/mariadb deployment not just Wordpress.

Wordpress is pretty secure but putting everything in a shared hosting with lax security like dreamhost or hostgator et al its asking for trouble.

SadWebDeveloper··on Print Debugging Should Go Away
Setting up a debugging environment is painfully difficult and time consuming that even the most pro-efficient devs (testers/qa) on debugging don't even bother wasting time.

This is the only thing that visual studio does better than any IDE on the market... zero-config debug, even some mature IDE's like jetbrains ones still to this day don't have zero-config debug, it always take some external and obscure configuration to get things right.

SadWebDeveloper··on How to arm Caesarean babies with the gut bacteria they need
wait... what?
SadWebDeveloper··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
Whats the best book for learning about electronics, soldering, pcbs, fpga... m looking for something more project based rather than here is 500 pages of theory and some illustrations (like most of the books outhere) better if start slow (with protoboards) and ends with fpgas.
SadWebDeveloper··on A dark web tycoon pleads guilty, but how was he caught?
afaicr the bug used was the one reported as MFSA 2013-53 aka CVE-2013-1690[1] but someone correct me if m wrong.

SadWebDeveloper··on Cloudflare CTO: “If we did [take on GitHub] what features would you like?”
Please no, as a TOR user f*ck Cloudflare.
SadWebDeveloper··on Show HN: Scar – Static websites with HTTPS, a global CDN, and custom domains
Anyone have an a average monthly fee for using these as hosting solution? last time i ran the numbers using all that services go from 5 to 10 USD per month and was better to use amazon lightsail (3.5 per month) or other cheaper alternatives at lowendbox
SadWebDeveloper··on The iPhone XS and XS Max Review: Unveiling the Silicon Secrets
> Apple is about to take the single thread performance crown from Intel

I believe they already have that crown have for mobile/low-power, but for desktop/servers nop... not even close considering the microarchitecture their processor are being designed they won't even be close to what intel already does with a single instruction.
