Selfcommit··on Advice for ambitious 19 year olds
I'm not sure I follow the distinction you're making. I can make things work, but I don't know if that makes them a good product.. I guess that's your point?
Selfcommit··on Advice for ambitious 19 year olds
I need to take time to build code I can actually show off.

The things I build now are essentially web interfaces sitting on databases. The problem is they aren't exactly.. or at all.. legal.

Great learning projects (putting my home video library into a web interface, with episode data from a TV series API) but not something I feel I can show.

Thanks. Can you provide a sample question? Or direct me to a good place to look?
Selfcommit··on Advice for ambitious 19 year olds
I have done much of that - except for the putting myself out there part.

Willing to move is no problem.

Thanks for the advice. I'm working my way through a Data structures course now, I'll look for the others soon.

Example scenario: If you ask me to solve a problem, I can intelligently talk to you about what a program that solves that problem is expected to do, and happily whiteboard a big picture idea. If I don't know the language required for implementation, that's ok because I'm pretty confident I can work out the basics and what I need to code.

To meet your points: A) I haven't really put myself out there in a while(over a year), I've been 'prepping' B) My algorithm's are poor. While I understand the concept of Big O notation, I can't readily look at something and say "oh that's a _______ sort"

Please understand that my intent here is not to begrudge you in any way - I think it's wonderful that you're working as an SE at such a young age - but.. I'm 10 years older than you. I code in the evenings, I spend my morning commute listing to any computer science online course I can find... I have over 5 years experience as a Systems Admin... I've interviewed with a number of big companies and startups but I don't feel nearly prepared enough to land an SE role.

How is it possible a 19 year old can?

I can accept that perhaps that 19 year old is just more clever than I am, but I'm a pretty clever guy. What am I missing?

Selfcommit··on How to fit 1,000 terabytes on a DVD
Would it really be so hard to engineer these "disks" with an outside layer of plastic protection?

I have a mock-up here: http://i.imgur.com/DbV5ByR.jpg

Selfcommit··on The Solitary Leaker
Brooks argues, "He betrayed honesty and integrity, the foundation of all cooperative activity. He made explicit and implicit oaths to respect the secrecy of the information with which he was entrusted. He betrayed his oaths."

This argument negates the trust and integrity the government discarded when it chose to implement citizen surveillance.

Further, Snowden took an oath to protect the US against all enemies, foreign and domestic. He broke no oath.

Selfcommit··on Larry Page addresses PRISM
I don't believe he can be forced to lie. If he was in that situation, I imagine he would simply not respond.
Selfcommit··on Robert Scoble and Jaron Lanier on wearable technology [video]
When you hand the type of person you described Google Glass.. they become a Glasshole. This might be the best definition yet. (Disclaimer: I LIke Glass, just not some of the fools who use it)
Selfcommit··on Robert Scoble and Jaron Lanier on wearable technology [video]
I agree I was probably a bit harsh on Robert.

I was a bit put off by the photo of himself in the shower.

Selfcommit··on Robert Scoble and Jaron Lanier on wearable technology [video]
I respect the right of those who can to downvote me, but I hope it's not in defense of Glass.

I love the product, I can't wait to get my hands on one.

Objectively however, the 3 speakers really offered nothing.

Selfcommit··on Robert Scoble and Jaron Lanier on wearable technology [video]
Total waste of time.

Lanier is obnoxious and comes off as a total clown. Paxman is not really interested in the topic. Scoble is just a Glasshole.

I'd like my 10 minutes back.

Selfcommit··on The Banality of ‘Don’t Be Evil’
That sounds quite a bit like a "Good Intention"

There's a saying about a road covered in those...

Selfcommit··on Soylent Campaign
Anyone else pick up on the fact that they claim to be allergen free? They use whey protein in the drink, so way are they even close to allergen free.

They also have a poor understanding of what constitutes an allergen.

Selfcommit··on Can gaming be the turning point for Linux on the desktop?
With Adobe's planned move to a web based suite, this point seems moot.
Selfcommit··on Ask HN: Building a Game of Chance Website
How liable is a programmer in these situations?
Selfcommit··on Tesla Raises $1B from Stock and Bond Sale
The moment you begin building teams to sell.. you become Ycombinator. I think it's clear that's a full time business, not something you do to generate cash.
Selfcommit··on Australian government tries to block two sites, takes down 1,200
This sounds way to much like Ameristralia
Selfcommit··on US Lists Ukraine as a “Priority Foreign Country” for Trade Sanctions
Came here hoping the comments could do a better job explaining what I just read.
Selfcommit··on U.S. Government Fears End of Megaupload Case
Yes. Is that really such a bad thing?
Selfcommit··on Norton Ghost discontinued
Free? (Does not make it better but it's a good start.)

Some high points:

-Records and inventories all systems it contacts -Has a windows client piece capable of domain joining/restarts/running 'snap-ins' or executables deployed from the FOG server up to 8M -Very supportive and helpful community

Selfcommit··on Norton Ghost discontinued
Another (And better) alternative.. http://www.fogproject.org

Selfcommit··on Taxi industry lawsuit against Uber transferred from state to US court
These guys are making some serious disruption in a terrible market. Good for them.

I wonder what this lawsuit would look like 10 years from now, when Uber Drivers are replaced by Uber leased "Google Cars" that pick you up?

Selfcommit··on Comcast injecting JS
This is exactly who wrote this code. I nearly accepted a job with one of Comcast's major consulting partners. My first hint should have been 2 technical interviews in which they were impressed that I used linux... and couldn't tell me a thing about what their day to day looked like. "Oh it's always different"

When I was issued my company laptop, the software had been installed by hand (OS and all). I offered to setup an imaging system for them... but the "IT guy" from the "IT consulting firm" wasnt exactly sure what that was and needed to find out who to get approval from first...

Selfcommit··on Stackoverflow rolls out "Chat with an expert"

Selfcommit··on A scientific accident that could change the world
Yeah, I don't understand the down votes honestly. We've seen this - not just a few months ago.

Why is it ok to post again? Should I have provided the HN link?

Selfcommit··on A scientific accident that could change the world
Anyone else remember when this was posted a few months ago? (I wish my account was named pepperidge farm, just for occasions like this.)
Selfcommit··on Google: Do what you want with Reader, but don't kill CalDAV
So then the Google calander API has always been used, but the data is delivered in CalDev format?

This move would then represent Google refusing to accept that format?

I didn't read things that way.

It makes good business sense - look at Maps API. You can get X number of free calls, but if you go over a certain limit you need to pay (That limit is pretty high if I recall)

So now fast forward to Microsoft and Others incorporating that API into their products - am I understanding correctly Google could charge for API calls similarly?
