In The Handmaid's Tale it's even worse than the quoted commenter described: the packaging and all the signage in the store is all pictures and no text because handmaids aren't allowed to be literate.
TurkTurkleton··on USB-C Has Finally Come into Its Own
Supposedly, though Nintendo's USB PD implementation in the Switch is a little jacked, as long as you use a charger that implements its PD support with an actual dedicated PD controller, you should be safe. The Nyko travel dock that infamously fried Switches faked it with a microcontroller which could sometimes overvolt one of the pins and fry the Switch's PD controller, rendering it unable to charge... at least according to this analysis by an engineer working on a third-party dock: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/ckaiiv/an_e...

Not all splitters are surge protectors, but most surge protectors are splitters (though single outlet surge protectors do exist). It is likely that when OP said "surge protector", they meant something like this: https://imgur.com/qHR9UFu
TurkTurkleton··on How I finally won my name from domain resellers after nine years of waiting
I have $FIRSTNAME@$LASTNAME.me. Not only do I get people being like "...dot me ...dot com?" when I speak it aloud, I've actually encountered one municipal government whose email address validation _actually rejects it_. Thank goodness I also have $NICKNAME$LASTNAME.com, although that has its own problems ($LASTNAME[0] == "Y" and $NICKNAME has a common hypocoristic form ending in "y", so people sometimes misread it as ${NICKNAME}y$LASTNAME.com).

I was going to say "found the Velcro employee"-- excuse me, I meant "employee of the company Velcro BVBA"-- but surely a Velcro employee would know that Velcro BVBA makes Velcro-branded hook-and-loop-fastener cable management products.
TurkTurkleton··on Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles
Ten years ago was 2009, dude. I definitely had an Android phone and used apps for navigation and music back then. In my car, even! Just via an aux cable instead of Bluetooth and Android Auto. (Of course, now I have a Mazda 3 and an iPhone and I use CarPlay...)
TurkTurkleton··on SerenityOS – a graphical Unix-like OS for x86, with 90s aesthetics
> Windows 95 didn't need a special 'dark mode' supported by the OS, because you just changed your colors in the GUI tool for changing colors and fonts and you were done.

You're over-romanticizing the past. There were plenty of apps even in the Windows 95 era that drew their own widgets and only half-respected the colors you set in the control panel, and that consequently looked like pureed ass if you changed the colors from the default.

Like tjalfi said, it's SAIL [0]. It was an ALGOL derivative.

TurkTurkleton··on Productive on six hours of sleep? You’re deluding yourself, expert says
> taking an excellent bowel movement in one's own toilet

On the other hand, as the saying goes: I make a nickel, boss makes a dime; that's why I poop on company time.

TurkTurkleton··on iPhone X
The corollary to "tak[ing] good ideas that were never implemented properly and do it properly", clearly, is taking good ideas that were implemented properly and completely fucking them up.

TurkTurkleton··on The Forgotten World of BBS Door Games
> In door games, turns were limited to prevent players with more spare time from dominating the game

And to prevent them from tying up what was very likely the BBS's only phone line.

TurkTurkleton··on Running the Let's Encrypt Beta
I didn't have any problems using StartSSL for any of my domains, and they all have whois privacy.

> I don't think BMW, with their slogan "The Ultimate Driving Machine", shares your notion of what it means to be German, then.

Or maybe they understand that different marketing approaches are required in different cultures. The slogan BMW uses in German-speaking markets is "Freude am Fahren" (roughly, "driving pleasure", or to be somewhat more literal, "pleasure while driving"), which is a bit more modest than "The Ultimate Driving Machine".
