VBprogrammer··on Uber's $1,500/month AI limit is a useful signal for AI tool pricing
I think we're all past the "bet-money-can-buy" stage. The most expensive models are an order of magnitude more expensive than the middle ground ones, so you need to be selective about what you run where.

And with a bit of careful routing - there isn't a lot stopping you sending the hard stuff to a cloud model and the average stuff to an on prem model.

I'd think for most companies the pace of change is too high at the moment. Give it a few years, a bit of a plateau in the improvements in frontier models and I can't see how many of these companies don't implode under the weight of competition on inference prices.
VBprogrammer··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
Or, in the real world, running a limited liability company could come with some sensible reporting requirements?
VBprogrammer··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
What are the arguments against public reporting?

As a consumer you are often sending deposits or even the full cost of goods to companies some time before you receive those goods (in effect you become a creditor). You are also dependent upon some of those companies for service and repairs. It seems reasonable that you can check the finances of a company you are creating a business relationship with, I know in the past I've checked company statements.

You are unlikely to have significant enough sway to force that kind of disclosure. Small businesses as consumers have less legal protection and are similarly unlikely to be able to make disclosure a precondition of a deal.

VBprogrammer··on Air France and Airbus found guilty of manslaughter over 2009 plane crash
Not if the Cessna is a King Katmai 182...that would have room to spare.
VBprogrammer··on Air France and Airbus found guilty of manslaughter over 2009 plane crash
I don't know if you can claim one is more straightforward. Sure a Cessna flies slower and has relatively simple aerodynamics. However, you could also be operating it out of a 400m sloping grass strip with a mountain off one end.

An A320 might be flying 3 times faster but is generally flying between relatively flat, straight runaways several miles long with approaches typically flown on a stable instrument approach from several nautical miles away. It's control laws mean flying straight or maintaining a particular bank is as simple as letting go of the control stick. If anything the stick and rudder skills in normal circumstances are much less involved. Systems management, obviously the autopilot, but also environmental, hydraulic, navigation an the operational concerns are obviously vastly more complex.

VBprogrammer··on Google Cloud Fraud Defence is just WEI repackaged
In a world where everything is shit, could I at least take away some solace in this helping to reduce Cloudflares hegemony?
VBprogrammer··on Ombudsman column: The Pentagon is trying to silence me
People say shit about Muslims and our country being full all the time and nothing happens. The law does make it illegal to insight violence though so if you publicly suggest buring down a hotel you might find yourself in trouble.

It makes a lot more sense than being investigated by the FBI because you wrote a negative article about the head or being charged for reposting some cryptic numbers.

VBprogrammer··on Ombudsman column: The Pentagon is trying to silence me
You did a good job of walking the line here. A tiny bit less over the top and I'd have not been convinced it was satire.
VBprogrammer··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
Yeah, for some reason the knot broke on the inside rather than at that connector.
VBprogrammer··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
My son recently broke the string on the light cord in the bathroom. I opened it up in perhaps the naive expectation that someone would have designed that in such a way that the string can be reattached. Sadly it wasn't.

In fact when you open the interior plastic piece the whole thing springs apart and everything from the clicking mechanism to the electrical terminals explode in different directions.

Thankfully, someone had uploaded a video of a very similar switch and, after a few cross words (man I hate assembling mechanisms with springs), I had a new overhand knot in the string and all of the contacts, springs and terminals back in place.

I would, without doubt, drive down to a shop and buy a new one next time...

VBprogrammer··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
A little bit off topic but our company recently enforced Microsoft Authenticator for account login. Which I was mildly annoyed about but now I'm super pissed off because they have started abusing the notification permission granted to allow authenticator to work to push out ads for Microsoft 365. It feels like we've gone back to 90s Microsoft when everyone hated them.
VBprogrammer··on Jury finds Meta liable in case over child sexual exploitation on its platforms
I feel uncomfortable about the idea of controlling children, even my own. Certainly there is a requirement to protect children from others but I feel like putting in guard rails to prevent children from themselves only leads to making things taboo and, as a result, more interesting.

Or Blockbuster being a massive real-estate company. Or McDonald's for that matter.
VBprogrammer··on Waymo Safety Impact
We're not even a decade beyond some poorly conceived software crashing two otherwise functional aircraft into the ground and now it's going to save us all...
VBprogrammer··on Layoffs at Block
I'm not sure it was a brain fart, more I was expecting an area of industry rather than geography.
VBprogrammer··on Layoffs at Block
Not being obtuse, I even googled it, but I have no idea what SFBA is in this context. I'm assuming it's not to do with windsurfing in the San Francisco Bay Area or some kind of insulation. Could you elaborate?
VBprogrammer··on So many trees planted in Taklamakan Desert that it's turned into a carbon sink
I live in the UK. Most of our farmland is divided into relatively small parcels owing to geography and history (they were divided long before mechanisation).

However, when you come across a field of wheat, rape or corn it's notable how little diversity there remains. A complete absence of birds or insects for example. The agricultural deserts, I believe, are as damaging as their drought based cousins.

VBprogrammer··on A brief history of barbed wire fence telephone networks (2024)
This might be a bit of a tangent but I couldn't help but wonder if the appearance of 20ma here is related to the old fashioned, but I understand commonly used, 4-20ma current loop signalling in industrial applications.
VBprogrammer··on Irish man detained by ICE for 5 months
Before we even get into the complete lack of morality in forcefully separating a married couple, removing him from his home and his business; you might want to check what happens to people who do agree to be deported. Plenty of examples where this has not at all been as painless as you are implying.

> defendents have rights and due process.

As they say: you can beat the rap but not the ride. If a state wants to make your life incredibly difficult for months or even years they can, the competent ones can even do it while staying (mostly) on the right side of the law.

VBprogrammer··on How ICE knows who Minneapolis protesters are
A common technique used by racists is to pretend they are only care about illegal immigration.
VBprogrammer··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
And yet without the video evidence provided by other protestors you'd still be spouting the line that Alex Pretti was brandishing his gun.
VBprogrammer··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
I've seen pictures of someone with a damaged finger. Given the wild differences between video evidence and what the top levels of the administration claim happen, I think a healthy degree of scepticism is warrented.

Could easily have been hurt by their own flashbang devices or caught it in a car door.

> If you are not resisting arrest, you don't need three officers to pin you to the ground.

If three officers decide to push you to the ground and jump on top of you, you have three officers on top of you. This says nothing about whether you were resisting arrest or not.

Resisting arrest at least implies that you have some understanding that you are actually being arrested and by someone who at least notionally has some legal basis for doing so. It's why police officers will typically identify themselves and tell you under what you are suspected of during an arrest. If after that someone attempts to flee or fightback then sure.

I'm relatively sure spraying chemical irritants at point blank range is not following any reasonable use of force guidelines. They are just retaliating with force because it suits them.

VBprogrammer··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
The obvious retort is "obstruction". Of course it doesn't hold up to scrutiny because courts have consistently held that obstruction has to be a physical act. Simply being nearby, filming or calling them names doesn't count.
VBprogrammer··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
Law enforcement only works when the people have trust in those doing the enforcement.

ICE have lost the trust of a significant portion of the people in Minnesota because they are using unreasonable force, eroding constitutionally protected rights and behaving with impunity.

They are, in reality, just conducting a politically motivated campaign of harassment. If they truly wanted to deport as many people as possible they'd start with border states like Florida and Texas, places with 20x more undocumented immigrants.

VBprogrammer··on I stopped following the news
I've recently been trying to avoid news. Particularly US political news. Sadly for some reason blocking sites on my Eero router doesn't seem to work. Thankfully Facebook recently put up a modal dialog asking me to subscribe or accept personalised ads (pretty sure the GDPR explicitly forbids that but whatever, everyone is doing it), it's doing a good job of preventing me seeing the usual feed of news there. At some point I'll put PiHole on my NAS and take care of Reddit etc.
VBprogrammer··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
New York is the worst security I've ever come through for just being needlessly horrible. Like screaming at people because they didn't literally put their feet on the "footprints" on the floor.

Toronto was fine. Just a slightly incredulous conversation about how we could take 3 weeks off to travel Canada.

VBprogrammer··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Trains are a much easier target in most countries. Generally only the high-speed / cross border ones have any security at all. Until maybe 10 years ago you didn't even really need a ticket to get access to one (now ticket barriers are common).
