VectorLock··on Tape Storage Trundles On, Increases Yearly Volume to 128 Exabytes
Bit rot, tapes are extremely prone to actual physical rot too.
VectorLock··on Beans are protein-rich and sustainable. Why doesn’t the US eat more of them?
This looks tasty thanks for sharing the recipe.

What about the pressure cooker makes them more practical? Reduced cooking time? Can you skip the rehydration process for dried beans? For me at least I think a lot of what limits me looking to beans is to go from "no prep" to "finished dish" for beans involves hours of soaking, then a long cooking process.
VectorLock··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
Tweets of a screenshot of the text rather than the actual text is far and away the worst part about this.
VectorLock··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
Whos hallucinating more, people that think these prompts will prevent these things, the LLMs, or people who think they're real?

If anybody worried about AI-driven disinformation just has to take a glance at the fact that _nobody has any idea_ already.

VectorLock··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
When we have chats executing code/calling apis/doing things on the Internet more widely its going to make SQL injection and XSS seem like a pleasant dream by comparison.
VectorLock··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
The motor was great, everything attached to it though not so much.

My 89 Cherokee was like this but since 2010 they're just all complete junk.
VectorLock··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
Depending on the corporate culture: feature, not a bug.

>Except Chrysler, it's best to avoid all era of Chrysler and I say this as former K-Car and Ram owner.

Jeeps are hilariously bad. Like "far and away statistically the worst" reliability wise.

VectorLock··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
Funny, I always considered about 2008-2012 to be about the sweet spot for vehicles. Enough electronics but not too much.
VectorLock··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
Worked with him at Twitter. Doing software at GM seems like the right place for him.
VectorLock··on Check if your IKEA chair is compatible with your screen
Old school sensitive CMOS chips pretty much made the market for "wrist strap" ESD.
VectorLock··on Scaling Databases at Activision [pdf]
Its web scale!
VectorLock··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
We have a grandfathered in "dev" support that doesn't require a monthly percentage. Every plan otherwise has a 3-10% marginal premium.
VectorLock··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
I have a mid seven figure/year AWS spend and still have grandfathered "dev" level of support. Haven't gotten the (ridiculously expensive) "enterprise" level support because I'm just so happy with what we get with "dev" plan.
VectorLock··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
Every year, managing 4000-5000 instances at least a handful of instances will fail to transition states for me. Support ticket usually clears it up.
VectorLock··on Future Blues – Emily's Cowboy Bebop Page (1999)
Consistent updates for 24 years. Makes me feel bad I never stuck with anything that long in my life.
VectorLock··on Sorting waste and recyclables with a fleet of robots
I mean that "mobile arm" robot looks like it could be made to do practically anything. Probably not even that well optimized just for sorting trash.
VectorLock··on Amazon Titan
Not only this but tons of places have "excess" to spend on AWS and so buy stuff through the AWS Marketplace. All kinds of SaaS sell things through the marketplace because its just easier at many companies to get purchases through them.
VectorLock··on We need to tell people ChatGPT will lie to them, not debate linguistics
Anthropomorphization in "prompt engineering" is what really gets me.
VectorLock··on We need to tell people ChatGPT will lie to them, not debate linguistics
Better than getting extincted, I suppose.
VectorLock··on If AI scaling is to be shut down, let it be for a coherent reason
You're not financially incentivized, in most instances, to make chemical bombs with undersink materials.
VectorLock··on If AI scaling is to be shut down, let it be for a coherent reason
This whole discussion about slowing down AI for safety wonders why this mindset didn't appear during the advent of microchips or the Internet, both of which have had arguably clear downsides.

Which voice is loudest now for the brake-pedal-wishers? "AGI will enslave us" or "everything can be faked now?"

VectorLock··on Playing video games can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and improve mood
>Your brain likely does too.

How does your brain "scar" from this? I wouldn't say that the experiences are at all traumatic.

VectorLock··on Retrieval in LangChain
GPT-4 is just regurgitating what its "learned" from previously scraped content on the Internet. If somebody didn't answer it on StackOverflow before 2021, it doesn't know it. It can't reason able anything, it doesn't "understand" stacks or pointers.

That said its really good at regurgitating stuff from StackOverflow. But once you step beyond anything that someone has previously done and posted to the Internet, it quickly gets out of its depth.

>General anaesthesia and the idea you are actually awake but forget.

This freaked me out as well. Wouldn't I know in the moment? Do we actually experience something if we don't encode memories for it?

VectorLock··on ChatGPT Plugins
Difference in philosophy is not "the world can't end fast enough and nothing matters."
VectorLock··on ChatGPT Plugins
Wait until someone utters in court "It wasn't me that downloaded the CSEI, it was ChatGPT."
VectorLock··on ChatGPT Plugins
Conceivably ChatGPT could help, with more suggestions for fuzzing that independently operating malicious actors may not have been able to synthesize.

Most of the really bad actors have skills approximately at or below those displayed by GPT-4.
