VectorLock··on Enabling Bluetooth connections on Stadia Controllers
Someone posted an article on HN recently that said the best way to detect a knock-off controller is that it'll cause the Linux driver to kernel panic.
VectorLock··on Enabling Bluetooth connections on Stadia Controllers
Also seems like a benefit for being able to use "any" screen to game on. The screen doesn't need to know how Stadia works or interface with the game controller, it just needs to receive video and display it.
VectorLock··on Launch HN: IcePanel (YC W23) – Onboard engineers with explorable system designs
Cool! Does PixiJS draw the arrows and boxes and stuff for you or did you have to implement that yourself?
VectorLock··on Tomu – A family of devices which fit inside your USB port
"Laptop snatched at Starbucks" is a security incident scenario people frequently plan for.

And it worked out REALLY bad for Ross.

VectorLock··on Launch HN: IcePanel (YC W23) – Onboard engineers with explorable system designs
That'd be pretty cool!

I'm curious what JavaScript/React libraries do you use to generate your lines and boxes visuals?

VectorLock··on Launch HN: IcePanel (YC W23) – Onboard engineers with explorable system designs
In my case, PlantUML.

Can you import existing C4 models/diagrams into this?
VectorLock··on NetworkX 3.0 - create, manipulate, and study complex networks in Python
Nice I like the concept of turning around Graphviz dot files and turning them from an intermediate representation of visualization into the actual source of truth for the system. Cool idea.
VectorLock··on Tomu – A family of devices which fit inside your USB port
For devices like the Somu I could see it be useful for locking the device if a certain shock occurred. For example, someone snatched my laptop at the coffee shop. Something Ross Ulbricht probably wishes he would have had.
VectorLock··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
Impressive enough to fool the rubes is all the matters.
VectorLock··on Mastodon Web Space Search Tool
A lot of people in the Fediverse community will probably shit a brick over this. Pretty much just like tbray says.
VectorLock··on Why are antennas popping up over the Salt Lake City foothills?
I've been interested in cryptocurrencies back when they were still called "hashcash" so this whole corruption of the original ethos really hits me in the feels.
VectorLock··on Dedicated biomass is not a good idea
Trying to use biofuel to replace ALL sources of energy sounds pretty silly. Is anybody actually suggesting that?

What about how much land would be required to replace the _gasoline_ usage with ethanol?

"Each year, one acre of corn produces 551 gallons of ethanol, which is the equivalent of 386 gallons of gas."

"According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), Americans consumed 140.43 billion gallons of gasoline in 2015"

363.8 million acres to make enough corn to replace gasoline - not factoring in all the other negative externalities. A little more than 4x land area what the US uses now.

VectorLock··on Why are antennas popping up over the Salt Lake City foothills?
>but that demand has been minimal so far.

I am mostly anti-crypto but I always thought the concept of Helium was cool. If the "price" was competitive with LTE-M and NB-IoT (I'm not sure if it was, maybe it is now?) what stopped people from using it?

VectorLock··on Show HN: I built Haystack – your own google for scattered workplace knowledge
Seems quite skinny on info about indexing. It nabs your login and stores tokens to the sites you want to index then... does it just spend CPU days running in your browser downloading and indexing all that data? How much storage do you need locally to index what can potentially be massive amounts of data in most corporate information sources?
VectorLock··on Why I'm still using Python
I know thats a big part of the reason I wish it was accessible natively and frictionless in Python. I'd like to not learn a whole new inferior language to make a decent UI.
VectorLock··on For U.S. companies, the race for the new EV battery is on
The linked article does a nice job of citing their sources, despite trying to skew them. The top handful of recalls are from electrical fires, 1 ABS (electrical) issue, a handful of battery issues, then at the bottom 1 issue with fuel leaks.

Go ask a firefighter which they think is more dangerous.

VectorLock··on Why I'm still using Python
I think its gross to try to inline a multiline anonymous function usually inside of what should just be a function call.
VectorLock··on For U.S. companies, the race for the new EV battery is on
A vehicle fire with an EV is much more dangerous than an ICE. They burn hotter, re-ignite, and take a massive amount of water to put out (like, a pools worth of water)
VectorLock··on Why I'm still using Python
Functions are first-class objects. If you want a multi-line lambda thats just a function.
VectorLock··on Why I'm still using Python
Python is weak on front-end web and mobile, but I suppose its impossible to expect Python to be great at everything. For the number of niches it can fill, I think Python is still ahead.
VectorLock··on Why I'm still using Python
datatypes are a great way for making static types. Python's power is you can use as little or as much typing is right for you.
VectorLock··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
The thought of a business as big as Southwest having to do a hard reboot is wild to me.
VectorLock··on Using eBPF and predefined inspections to minimize “observability tax”
>An update to the node graph is currently in the works

Some more info there would be fantastic.

VectorLock··on Tesla stock falls again, toward longest losing streak in more than 4 years
Real actual full self-driving would transform the auto industry and society. There is no "call" for it in the same way there was no call for air travel before the Wright brothers.
VectorLock··on Using eBPF and predefined inspections to minimize “observability tax”
Its too bad they had to build a whole separate tool because Grafana wasn't capable. The Node graph panel for Grafana really needs some love.

Edit: Also they need a SaaS to sell, so of course.

VectorLock··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
As an aside, they really did some Olympic level gymnastics to backronym SHAKEN: Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs.
VectorLock··on Caroline Ellison, CEO of Alameda Research, pleads guilty to seven offences
She hasn't been sentenced yet. Lets hold off and see if its what she earned.
VectorLock··on Apple TV+ to adapt William Gibson’s cyberpunk novel Neuromancer
A few months ago they came out with a black and white recut of Johnny Mnemonic. Around that time I was rewatching it and what hit me like a brick was this is what the movie's depiction (released in 1995) of what Beijing in 2021 would look like: https://i.imgur.com/WZY6hjf.png
VectorLock··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
When he is crowing with #TwitterFiles faux leaks about how an internal cabal were making policy decisions about banning people, then making an extra-policy decision banning something he didn't like (posting public information) and then trying to backport policy for it.. The whole thing rings a bit hollow.
