VectorLock··on Review of the Kinesis Advantage360 Professional
I still have a PS/2 Advantage.
VectorLock··on Review of the Kinesis Advantage360 Professional
Having carried a Kinesis Advantage many times in luggage, I personally appreciate this is easier to pack and won't miss the function keys much / at all.
VectorLock··on I am endlessly fascinated with content tagging systems
How much content they've actually put in their tagging system is just as interesting as how the tagging system works.
VectorLock··on Gain of Function? Not So Fast
They will then vehemently defend how important it was for them to make airborne hyper-HIV because it will then help us understand how to protect us from airborne hyper-HIV.
VectorLock··on I am endlessly fascinated with content tagging systems
I'm not scared away by things that might offend the puritanically inclined and I'm interested in ontologies and this is a fascinating one.

There was some drama about someone training a Stable-Diffusion-alike by ripping their dataset that brought it to my attention.

VectorLock··on I am endlessly fascinated with content tagging systems
One example of an unexpectedly rich and deep tagging ontology is the Danbooru "Anime" image board [NSFW] https://danbooru.donmai.us/
VectorLock··on Nvidia’s Implicit Warping is a potentially powerful deepfake technique
"can't trust anything" makes any kind of reasonable society impossible.

If you meant "trust some things if they fit some kind of criteria" you mean something different than "can't trust anything."

VectorLock··on Nvidia’s Implicit Warping is a potentially powerful deepfake technique
"can't trust anything anymore" is arguably a worse place to end up.
VectorLock··on We're moving away from swap partitions on our Linux servers
Fail fast is in most situations better than swap hell.
VectorLock··on Equifax used records it collects from companies to fire employees with 2nd jobs
This could be a profitable service to Equifax to sell, help companies root out the "overemployed" that have proliferated since WFH became mainstream.
VectorLock··on Meta executives ‘inadvertently’ identified in OnlyFans bribery suit
Not if he pocketed ALL the money himself.

Hopefully he had the foresight to kick some down to the guys upstairs.

VectorLock··on Tcl Ported to Go
TCL for many people begins and ends at Eggdrop.

Thanks Robey.

VectorLock··on Take a break
And take actual breaks. I'm on the verge of burn out and wondering "whats happening? I'm taking regular time off work" and realize I'm taking time off to do other kinds of work (parents estate, medical issues, just other life work) rather than actually taking the time to recharge.
VectorLock··on What can we learn from leaked Insyde's BIOS for Intel Alder Lake
Quite a "Frist" commit!
VectorLock··on HHS purchases $290M worth of drugs for nuclear emergencies
If you're in the blast wave, yes. If you're in the fallout zone, you can do things to mitigate your exposure. Then again, you may think the ones gone with the blast wave were the lucky ones.
VectorLock··on HHS purchases $290M worth of drugs for nuclear emergencies
Do you have a little prepper cache in the office of your paying clients?

If I had an office and my contractor had a little stash like that I'd think it was kind of weird.

VectorLock··on Show HN: SigNoz – open-source alternative to DataDog, NewRelic
Wonder how much it would be if you just used all the native AWS tools for things you get from Datadog.
VectorLock··on 230K Chinese “persuaded to return” from abroad to establish Extraterritoriality
>threats against family members in the PRC, directly approaching and intimidating the fugitive overseas, or outright kidnapping

Wow. Actual gangster tactics.

VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
And poof there goes my interest. No prices.
VectorLock··on The 'Egg' Laptop
The most impressive thing to me is creating the case using Python for a CAD.
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
If you haven't seen document oriented data work you haven't been looking very hard.
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
Me neither. Immediately makes me disinterested in something that would otherwise be pretty cool.
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
Sounds pretty cool. How much?
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
You do database migrations or you handle data with a variable shape. Where do you want to put your effort? The latter makes rollbacks easier at least.
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
Rigid structures and schemas are nice, but having document oriented data also has its advantages.
VectorLock··on Reducing logging cost by two orders of magnitude using CLP
It seems very cool to get logmine style log line templating built right in. I've found its very helpful to run logs through it, and having a log system that can do this at ingest time for quicker querying seems like it'd have amazing log digging workflow benefits.
VectorLock··on Select * from cloud
Are people usually setting up centralized shared instances of Steampipe or is it more of a "run on everyone's laptop" deployment preferred?
VectorLock··on The Endless Doomscroller
I realized today that being a contrarian is good in times when people are doom saying. I've felt relatively optimistic with all the talk about long term recession etc. I unfortunately had to talk to someone today who was talking about how the market might not recover for half a decade and my immediate though was "if this smoothbrain thinks the market has further to go, maybe its time for me to move more into the market."
VectorLock··on Literate DevOps (2014)
Gitlab has a way built in to make Jupyter notebooks into "Runbooks."

VectorLock··on Heavier cars are safer for their drivers, but far deadlier for everyone else
They spent a lot of time marketing how safe the SMART car was for a small vehicle. I believe they even showed putting a semi tractor on top of the SMART car to show how rigid its safety shell was.
