VectorLock··on DXGI debugging: Microsoft put me on a list
Sounds pretty click-baity but if a company put the name of my software on an opaque list that ships with the OS that makes my software behave differently than I expect it to and didn't even TELL ME about it I'd be way WAY more pissed than this guy is.

Space Station 14 is the same though but it might use some 3d stuff for rendering based on the comments in the blog about issues with OpenGL (or might just use OpenGL's 2D stuff) I know it has some 3d-ish things for visibility shadows but those might just be done in 2D, and from what I've tried SS14 (and SS13) is a 2D game.

Man I gotta give this person props, that is a LOT of effort to get your game to run native ARM64 on Windows. How many people out there are trying to game on ARM64 Windows devices?
VectorLock··on Configuration files are user interfaces
I like where their head is at here, especially the "superset of JSON" part. Some of the things I'm not _in love_ with like the %% ending blocks or how maybe a bit of significant whitespace might make things a bit less misleading with indentation as others have said, but overall I think I like this better than YAML.
VectorLock··on U.S. investors, Trump close in on TikTok deal with China
US bought a big stake in Intel; the US is quickly attempting to replicate China's system of State Capitalism. If you can't beat em, join em, I guess.
VectorLock··on Stategraph: Terraform state as a distributed systems problem
Having done some work with building graph representation of compute resources (by importing tfstate & syncing from aws) and its a very useful representation for building things like visualizations and detecting dependencies. Moving tfstate to a real distributed graph system would help solve a LOT of the nasty hacks they mention in this article that I have run into HARD when working with very large numbers of resources and multiple teams/team sizes.
VectorLock··on We all dodged a bullet
The TLDs run the whole gamut from completely open to almost impossible to get.
VectorLock··on We all dodged a bullet
There's like 1500 TLDs, now some of them are restricted and country-code TLDs but now it makes me wonder how much it would actual cost per year to maintain registration of every non-restricted TLD. I'm sure theres some SaaS company that'll do it.

Oops you hit a pothole now your car won't go.

Terrible analogy.

What about the space you're using? Do they delete it? Remove all your configurations? Prevent you from doing anything with your account until you up your limit or wait until your month resets?

If you're worried about getting a big bill, and you don't care if it gets shut off when you're not using it, why don't you shut it down yourself?

AWS made the tradeoff to keep the lights on for customers and if there is a huge bill run up unintentionally and you contact them with it they refund it. I've never experienced them not doing this when I've run up five figure bills because of a misconfiguration I didn't understand. I don't think I've ever even heard of them not refunding someone who asked them for a refund in good faith.

VectorLock··on Serverless Horrors
Yes, a sign of resilient architecture is to shut down when it encounters some stress.
VectorLock··on Serverless Horrors
Its not expensive for them, its expensive for their customers. If you went over your spending limit and they deleted all your shit, people would be absolutely apoplectic. Instead they make you file a relatively painless ticket and explain why you accidentally went over what you wanted to spend. This is an engineering trade-off they made to make things less painful for their customers.
VectorLock··on Serverless Horrors
Amazon refunded you and you hate them for it?

I think one of the reasons I appreciate AWS so much is that any time there has been snafu that led to a huge bill like this they've made it pretty painless to get a refund- just like you experienced.

If you want to discount a tool that may save you an immense amount of time because you might have to help it along the fast few feet, thats up to you.

If you can share a tool that can analyze a function and create a test for all corner cases in a popular language, I'm sure some people would be interested in that.

VectorLock··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
Parameterized tests are good, but I think he might be talking about exercising all the corner cases in the logic of your function, which to my knowledge almost no languages can auto-generate for but LLMs can sorta-ish figure it out.
VectorLock··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
Interactive debuggers and printf() are both completely valid and have separate use-cases with some overlap. If you're trying to use, or trying to get people to use, exclusively one, you've got some things to think about.

No I was actually wondering how many have been used to send CW messages that people have been able to receive.

Power is solar and cooling is radiators. They did the math on it, its feasible and mostly an engineering problem now.

The original article even addresses this directly. Plus hardware returns over fast enough that you'll simply be replacing modules with a smattering of dead servers with entirely new generations anyways.
