VectorLock··on I jumped from a plane, my parachute failed, I hurtled towards earth feeling calm
Does medical insurance cover injuries sustained thrillseeking? I assume they would.

Underassessment of risk probably helps contribute to the desire to do things like skydive and climb Everest.
VectorLock··on Understanding AWS End of Service Life Is a Key FinOps Responsibility
Deprecating a service is one thing.

Charging an arm and a leg for a deprecated service is another.

VectorLock··on Understanding AWS End of Service Life Is a Key FinOps Responsibility
Yup this one hit me hard. USE2-ExtendedSupport:Yr1-Yr2:MySQL5.7 sent my bill up 70%.
VectorLock··on Understanding AWS End of Service Life Is a Key FinOps Responsibility
Had this bite me for my small-scale personal AWS setup. Have an AWS account I run some personal sites on, a Mastodon instance, etc. Got some Billing Alarms I setup that my bill went from normally $100 to $180. Got a $75 charge for USE2-ExtendedSupport:Yr1-Yr2:MySQL5.7 I mean I'm very used to Amazon's ridiculous fee structure but even this one caught me for a loop.

VectorLock··on Supreme Court Sets Rules for Blocking Citizens from Officials' Accounts
Self-described "free speech arm of the free speech movement" found out that defending _all speech_ really isn't the best idea.

There seemed to be a lot of confusion between "govt brought something to companies attention" and "Jack Booted Thugs neck squeezed social media company to censor for them."
VectorLock··on How to embrace asynchronous communication for remote work
Now would you describe that as synchronous or asynchronous?
VectorLock··on How to embrace asynchronous communication for remote work
Its hilarious how much people still cling to synchronous meetings, even in an increasingly "Remote", globally distributed company.

Far too often "this could have been an email" meetings end up forcing some people in some other time zone (usually the people in APAC people) to stay up late. I just can't figure out what the fixation is. Maybe they just like talking better than typing. Perhaps getting people to embrace dictation software (call it AI and they'll jump all over) could get them to break this habit.

VectorLock··on Improbable Island, one of the largest and longest-running online text adventures
(Un)Just In Time Code of Conducting to be even more hilariously capricious: your "ban user" button has a "reason" field that then appends that "reason" to your Code of Conduct.
VectorLock··on Lightweight JavaScript Framework Review (For Django Developers)
Or you get hung up on how bad JavaScript is compared to Python.
VectorLock··on Ask HN: How do you know it's time for you to quit your FAANG job?
I think its less about size but more about paying ridiculous salary bands. Netflix does that, but to my knowledge Microsoft is still at "body shop" pay levels.
VectorLock··on Ask HN: How do you know it's time for you to quit your FAANG job?
"Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen."
VectorLock··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Is it visible to the driver, while driving?
VectorLock··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
Its not just one script that you're curling and execing. That scripts curls and execs some other scripts. And those others. You're pretty much auditing a whole codebase at that point, for better or worse.
VectorLock··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
Wow that is a whole bunch of curling/execing bash scripts that curl/exec other bash scripts.
VectorLock··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
12v is such a common top-rail voltage for electronics of all kinds, I think its a bit more that than "car makers are too greedy to manufacture 400v headlights."
VectorLock··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Thats interesting; do they put the light somewhere that it isn't a nuisance to look at when you're inside the car?

I thought floor mats were put up as the most likely cause of the Toyota "spontaneous acceleration" incident?

Anecdotally my late model Camry has very thorough floor mat retention mechanisms.

Having posted open job reqs online in the past couple years and seen the absolute deluge of fraudulent resumes you get, I'd welcome this culture.
VectorLock··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
Timing belt change isn't _that_ bad on 90s Hondas, and pretty affordable to pay someone to do.

Can a Prius keep going if one of its ICE or EV motors dies? Then its not complexity, its redundancy!

You're slipping your wheels, that 'going crazy' is the ESC trying to regain traction.
VectorLock··on Who makes the most reliable new cars?
I feel like these numbers are fudged if Mini is coming in over Honda & Acura.
VectorLock··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
I'd say the 650 out of the 700 people who signed it were those who joined later for the money, and not early for the non-profit's mission.
VectorLock··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
"Ethical grounds" read: has them.
VectorLock··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
No surprise that Musk co-founded OpenAI then.

Seems to be pretty much his MO across the board.

VectorLock··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
Excellent but not FANAANG astronomical.
VectorLock··on OpenAI's employees were given two explanations for why Sam Altman was fired
It feels like Altman started the whole non-profit thing so he could attract top researchers with altruistic sentiment for sub-FANAAG wages. So the whole "Altman wasn't candid" thing seems to track.
