ajcodez··on Opposition to Sidewalk Labs in Toronto
> And probably by a developer making money by cutting every corner in the build.

Well at least Concord didn’t get it. You can remove surveillance but it’s hard to undo a bunch of ugly condo towers.

ajcodez··on Blow up: how half a tonne of cocaine transformed the life of an island
I had a friend from university who tried to smuggle cocaine from Las Vegas to Australia. He was coerced by a guy working at Vice and was introduced to the opportunity through a drug dealer / nightlife mutual connection. I remember he bet me $20 he could beat me at 1v1 basketball. He would participate in pyramid schemes and was a club promoter too. I heard he came from a wealthy or at least upper middle class family in the Middle East.

Initially he was supposed to escort someone else doing the smuggling and get paid, but then the job changed. He said no, so they threatened his safety and his younger sisters safety who was also studying in Canada. He got caught and sentenced to years in jail in Australia.

ajcodez··on Ask HN: How does your development team handle database migrations?
I wrote my own schema as code library and then switched back to normal migrations with no down method. It takes some care to not delete anything for a while until it’s definitely not needed ever again.

ajcodez··on Amazon S3 will no longer support path-style API requests
I switched to MinIO for anything new. Happy user - https://min.io/
ajcodez··on Show HN: EdgeDB – Next generation database
I like the name. It sounds like everything is one fast and painless join away.
ajcodez··on Who has the fastest website in F1?
In my experience with non tech clients, the website is built using Wordpress, hosted by the agency, and presented in a board room. The presenter will connect a newish MacBook into the projector after lots of fuss about the right dongle type and proceed to click around. The decision maker at the company will verify items against their memory and usually things that users do not care about, like they will ask who agreed to have a photo of the red car instead of the blue car because if they recall everyone had agreed to the blue car. Oh it was the red car after all. Really, because the blue car looked better. Oh it was a placeholder image of a different racing team. Oh well in that case it’s fine.
ajcodez··on Forget Bribery – The Real Scam Is Pretending That Degrees Have Value
It's not on the university to stop, it's on the rest of the world to wake up.
ajcodez··on Flaws in Bitcoin make a lasting revival unlikely
Flaws in USD make a lasting outcome unlikely.
ajcodez··on Was MongoDB Ever the Right Choice?
I don’t think we’re on the same page here. It’s all good.
ajcodez··on Was MongoDB Ever the Right Choice?
> And then what happens when they add a field to the form and the table already had a million rows?

Maybe I don’t follow. You would insert a row into the fields table. Millions of rows should be fine.

> I asked “what would have bought us”.

I don’t know. None of this matters really, as long as the service works.

ajcodez··on Was MongoDB Ever the Right Choice?
There’s nothing stopping you from creating tables and indexes on the fly using SQL but it requires explicit commands.

> What would an RDBMS have brought us?

It would probably work using a forms table, fields table, submissions table, and values table.

ajcodez··on If I Sleep for an Hour, 30 People Will Die (2016)
I would imagine it saves the government money and saves lawful visitors time. Many borders have a manual processing line when the automated system fails or there are further questions.
ajcodez··on Why Mailchimp is no longer in the Shopify App Store
I don’t know. In my case for screening investors there is mandatory reporting.
ajcodez··on Why Mailchimp is no longer in the Shopify App Store
Know Your Customer is performed at different levels for different requirements. You can KYC individuals or businesses. For individuals, there is a Level 2 check which verifies a government issued document and a selfie holding the document. There is also a Level 3 check that includes verifying a proof of residence document like a bank statement or utility bill. The end result is reasonable confidence the individual is a legal resident of a specific jurisdiction. There is also eKYC which is a credit history and other data sources check but you don’t actually process any documents.

Anti Money Laundering is a ongoing process where you subscribe to a service that searches and monitors different lists for the name and birth year of all your customers. It raises a flag for a fuzzy match. The lists range from sanctions and terrorism which should immediately freeze the customer account, to adverse media such as financial crimes which is a judgement call depending on your service, to politically exposed persons or PEP which means to be cautious about transactions that could be improper use of public funds.

ajcodez··on Sketch raises $20M in Series A funding
> In your tool an anti pattern that I found was that it seems to use inline styles and css class names of sort 'font-normal' 'text-gray1', etc. That's unmaintainable for large code base.

Actually lots of companies use micro classes. I first learned about it using Tachyons and built a full compliance platform. It’s good because you don’t need to worry about unintended visual changes and bad because you can’t make large style changes without lots of effort.

ajcodez··on Why is no one signing their emails?
Isn’t that service Keybase?
ajcodez··on U.S. users are leaving Facebook by the millions, Edison Research says
I’m sure readers on HN are excited about the day of privacy reckoning but I stopped using Facebook because the news feed sucks. I’ll stare at a photo of someone I don’t remember trying to recall how I know them and then for the next month it’s photos and videos and requests for travel recommendations from them until I block them. It’s clear despite all the data Facebook has collected the company has no clue who I care about or what I’m interested in.
ajcodez··on Red Hat Satellite to standardize on PostgreSQL backend
I think it also has to do with the source of data. If you receive data from a third party it’s easy to insert the whole document and figure out what parts you need later. If your data comes from your own client interface it makes more sense to build up the data model over time.
ajcodez··on Facebook Referred to Kids as Young as Five as “Whales” for Its Monetized Games
Yeah my money, my decision. I had around $6k of bar mitzvah money and savings from working as a teaching assistant and summer jobs. I spent just over half on video games during high school and related costs. I made it all back the summer after high school as a tech intern and then spent it all going out drinking first year in university.
ajcodez··on Facebook Referred to Kids as Young as Five as “Whales” for Its Monetized Games
When I was 15 I spent $3,500 on a video game console, controllers, Xbox live, halo, halo map packs, etc. When I was 5 I spent $1 on gum.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: Highest paying remote companies?
I find the opposite is true. Low pay indicates poor leadership or lack of market opportunity leading to a very frustrating job.
ajcodez··on Netflix Flexes
Netflix should create less content, not more. I find it low quality and will discount titles with Netflix logo that otherwise look interesting. I’m also a Mubi and Amazon Prime subscriber. It’s surprising to hear the original content is working for the company.
ajcodez··on Humaaans: Mix-and-match illustrations of people with a design library
It either (1) looks like people you know, or (2) doesn’t look like people you know, in which case you notice everyone is young and healthy and happy (desirable traits). If you’re in the first group you definitely don’t want to see imagery of pot belly welders.
ajcodez··on Canadian meat giant Maple Leaf debuts new plant-based burger
Meat substitutes are the best for infrequent cooking. Chick’n by Tofurkey for example tastes pretty similar to chicken except it pan fries in minutes and lasts in the fridge for months. I think burgers miss the mark because hamburger buns don’t keep but definitely excited by more innovation.
ajcodez··on Oracle allegedly underpaid $400M in wages to underrepresented employees
I was in a similar position. It’s not really enforceable because if you threaten to take legal action you get fired, and if you stop getting paid you can’t afford lawyer fees, and if you stop working you’re in violation and have to leave the country, and even if you win it’s unclear what you will gain. If you have a family or partner you’re especially in a bind.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: What are must-know concepts for back end development?
It starts with a hard problem like “we need to predict the price of plane tickets”. If you don’t have a hard problem or serious scale, just use whatever works and forget about the backend.
ajcodez··on When hiring senior engineers, you’re not buying, you’re selling
In the article the author says there is more demand than supply for senior developers. I’m saying if you hire remote and pay a decent wage there is more supply than demand.
ajcodez··on Tesla laid off my disabled veteran husband then cancelled his sign on bonus
It’s true we don’t have context. It’s also possible she’s lying. But, it has to be read in the context of spending billions to bail out SolarCity which Elon owned with family. It is no wonder his generosity towards himself and unfeeling layoffs for employees will cause some people to question his moral character. Which again, in the context of a tobacco company is not interesting, but for save the world Tesla it is a real story.
ajcodez··on When hiring senior engineers, you’re not buying, you’re selling
If you pay low to mid six figures remote then you’re back to buying talent instead of selling opportunities.
