ajcodez··on Just a few drinks can change how memories are formed
Another question - do you benefit more from social ties formed while drinking or preservation of memory and early mornings?
ajcodez··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
Work on what interests you. My grandpa lived and breathed medicine and researched the intestines for like 60 years. There’s thousands just like him.
ajcodez··on Warby Parker built a 1,400-employee company by focusing on team culture
> Cheap plastic.

Interesting. On the WP website it says they use acetate from Italy which is usually differentiated from "plastic" in eyewear categories. Expensive plastic if you will.

ajcodez··on SIPC Says It Has Serious Concerns About Robinhood's New Product
I bet the idea is to use the deposits to fund margin lending to offer 3% interest rate. I remember the rate was like $10/m for $2000 margin which is 6% per year. If it’s funding margin lending would it count as empty brokerage account to get insured?
ajcodez··on Designing cities to counter loneliness? Let's explore the possibilities
It’s a lovely idea to design spaces for interaction, but I think there could be something said for quiet and privacy too. We probably need a balance.

I believe loneliness is an epidemic. I felt lonely recently for the first time. I’m mid 20s and in a relationship, lots of friends in my city, many in walking distance, but even so a few months ago I felt intensely lonely. I can’t imagine what it must be like for someone who moved cities. What worked for me is writing down a list of people I want to see more and then reaching out and planning activities. I find if I have one date night and see one friend a week it’s enough to keep me going and feel good. More is better of course.

ajcodez··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
Puerto Rico is attractive to US traders because if you live there for six months out of the year you pay zero capital gains tax. On the other hand programmers still have to pay income tax so are more likely to seek inexpensive tourist destinations.
ajcodez··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
They do. All the time. Traders move to Puerto Rico and programmers move to Thailand. It’s even better because you get the first $100k tax free as employee, or approx 14% off if self employed.
ajcodez··on How a Tech Billionaire Created Two Fortunes and a Software Sweatshop
It sounds like ESW is buying companies where the creative work was finished years ago. The policy appears to be freezing innovation and cutting costs to profit from existing contracts. I suspect the goal is not longevity. It’s also uncertain the company under highly paid and creative stewardship would not also fizzle out after a decade or two.
ajcodez··on Facebook’s top execs ‘make tobacco executives look like Mr. Rogers’
I certainly don’t want hateful media in my news feed. In my proposed solution nothing stops you from posting hate speech but it’s one button to filter all hate speech on the receiving end. I would suspect that hate speech gets fantastic engagement and wider audience than required.
ajcodez··on Unicorns are setting up their own venture capital funds
Big tech companies will do anything to avoid paying out more dividends.
ajcodez··on Facebook’s top execs ‘make tobacco executives look like Mr. Rogers’
I see some parallels with “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Facebook doesn’t share awful hate speech, people share awful hate speech. Half of us will be like “not enough, take away Facebook” and the other half will be like “some people suck, but I should have Facebook”.

I think the answer is to tag content using ML and then allow users to apply filters. It could be a “protect me” button in settings. I’m assuming most hate speech is in image and video format with text in the image but Facebook can probably figure that out with less than $1B worth of dev hours. It’s easy to delay sharing into “protect me” enabled news feeds until after processing and tagging.

ajcodez··on Tulsa Remote
I think it's target audience. If you're in late 20's early 30's and single it hints at a vibrant social life that could lead to a relationship. It's probably easier to move your single self than transition to a long distance relationship or move your whole family. The cash incentive too of $10k goes a lot further in your 20's.
ajcodez··on Uber posts $1B loss
Not on day 1 ... but day 2 should be fine.
ajcodez··on Facebook Morale Takes a Tumble Along with Stock Price
I actually enjoy the Instagram ads in my feed. It's usually quirky Kickstarter products like iPhone camera swivels, or magnets that keep your shirt tucked in, or a new brand of chef knives. Pretty fun seeing all the gadgets and ideas.
ajcodez··on Facebook Morale Takes a Tumble Along with Stock Price
I'm 25, very few of my contemporaries share on Facebook anymore. It's a shadow of three years ago. My mom and her brother will post pretty often. Self promoters fill up my feed. I can infinite scroll for a while without seeing anything from friends I spend time with offline. Facebook Messenger, Facebook Events, Instagram are still ubiquitous.
ajcodez··on Snap Says DOJ and SEC Are Investigating IPO Disclosures
* sarcasm on Dialy Mail part. It was always the first item at the top of Discover for me and very noticeable.
ajcodez··on Blue Apron lays off more workers
Definitely. My aunt liked the service and put $100k into APRN around $5. It adds up.
ajcodez··on Snap Says DOJ and SEC Are Investigating IPO Disclosures
Spectacles was a flop. Snap Map was a flop. Discover as a separate section leaves much to be desired (Daily Mail thanks for the consistent cleavage /s). Instagram ate stories and interactive filters. It’s been over for a while now.
ajcodez··on Google's interview system: it's not about solving the problem
I like to give short term contracts to promising applicants. It filters both good and bad for different reasons but it works.
ajcodez··on HashiCorp has raised $100 million in Series D funding
I wrote a tool to auto migrate postres using HashiCorp Config Language. It has the issues you describe — hard to rename tables and adding indexes can take a long time on existing data. It’s pretty convenient if you work within the constraints however.

ajcodez··on Decline of Greyhound service mirrors rural Canada's plight
I think the GO train in Ontario and MegaBus between cities may have taken a lot of the better routes from Greyhound too.
ajcodez··on The backlash against overtourism
If you already have tickets booked to Amsterdam I would recommend spending some time in Utrecht too. All of the canals and dutch charm, none of the red light district pub crawls.
ajcodez··on Twitter to remove ‘like’ tool in a bid to improve the quality of debate
In the notification settings there are advanced filters to remove notifications from accounts that you don't follow, don't follow you, new accounts, accounts that have unconfirmed contact information. I don't know any other platform that offers so much control. I have been lucky to never experience this type of abuse but if I were under attack I would apply advanced filters until the storm passes. Twitter could certainly do better (and could take more of a stand against cut and dry abuse), but in the meantime there are tools in the hands of users today to take control of unwanted notifications.
ajcodez··on Twitter to remove ‘like’ tool in a bid to improve the quality of debate
I find Twitter delightful again but I needed the following settings:

Media Preview: Off

Reduced Motion: On

Video Autoplay: Never

Increased Contrast: On

I also mute lots of accounts. It took a few months of muting anyone who replies with animated GIF or says negative things like “thanks for lecture” etc and I’m back to a well tuned information machine.

ajcodez··on Introducing Hooks
Agreed it’s implicit. I think it works by keeping track of start and end of Component rendering and counting the function calls to useState in between. You can imagine the following sequence of events.

- Enter Component A

- Use State A0 (does not exist, set default value)

- Exit Component A

Where calling setA0 sets the value at index 0 for Component instance A and queues render again.

- Enter Component A

- Use State A0 (has existing value)

- Exit Component A

ajcodez··on Introducing Hooks
Very cool feature. It reminds me of MobX where changing the observable value auto queues a render. It’s super productive. With hooks calling the setter auto queues a render too.

I’ve had a few embarrassing bugs in the past where the page route changes but it’s the same component so it doesn’t call componentDidMount and doesn’t fetch the new data. It looks like hooks default to fetching data too often instead of not enough which feels correct. Instead of users wondering why the page is broken your team is wondering why the server is getting 1000x more requests.

ajcodez··on Oculus co-founder is leaving Facebook after cancellation of ‘Rift 2’ headset
I remember hearing the term on Bloomberg when FAANG stocks were experiencing fantastic gains. Especially Netflix.
ajcodez··on Proposition C
Support systems for economic relocation feels like the right answer in theory. Living in SF proper is like filet mignon. Yes everyone needs shelter but not in expensive zip code. In order to actually reduce homelessness you probably need relocation opportunities + friction to stay. I can’t imagine working on either front so here we are.
ajcodez··on Ask HN: What's your advice for someone who's raising capital for the first time?
Keep everything incredibly simple. Follow the standard 10 slide deck pattern. Focus on the value your service provides in concrete terms. It’s not the time for subtlety. Spell things out explicitly in big font.

Set the price of shares at $0.10 or a round number. Raise a normal amount of money like $150k or $250k at a normal valuation like $1M (depends on industry etc). Get someone close to you to put in any nominal amount like $10k and tell investors you already have committed funds. If possible use a SAFE contract to accept funds faster.

Hire a freelance designer to clean up the deck and website home page if that is an issue. Ask friends to review both deck and home page. If possible make a product video walkthrough.

In meetings keep things friendly. Stick to the plan. Pitch and then ask if they are interested. Answer questions truthfully but in line with expectations. Never complain or give excuses for anything. Follow up frequently because investors are often busy and literally might forget they agreed to invest in your co.

Source - closed $250k seed round this month. Woohoo. Back to work.

ajcodez··on Ask HN: What's your advice for someone who's raising capital for the first time?
You typically have to be in the industry already and experiencing the problem first hand. If you’re technical the best opportunity is usually to partner with someone in the industry 50/50 cofounders. In the later stages you will become an expert because if you’re technical usually fast at learning.

If you have ideas for products or services to improve technical workflow that could also be a space to innovate too.
