ampdepolymerase··on A Blight on Soviet Science
- Giraffes use their neck to attack other giraffes.

- Epigenetics is a thing, but it is completely different from what Lamarck/Lysenko believed.

ampdepolymerase··on Photovoltaic retinal prosthesis restores high-resolution responses
You already can (if you are willing to be a clinical trial guinea pig). There are nanoparticle eye drops that enables that.
ampdepolymerase··on Wikipedia has Cancer (Wikipedia costs growth over time)
The growth looks perfectly normal if you take into account the growth of the internet.
ampdepolymerase··on Show HN: PBJ Live – Add live streaming to any app or website in ~6 LOC
Try Agora. They power Clubhouse.
ampdepolymerase··on Hassle-Free Database Migrations with Prisma Migrate
Prisma needs to make the Hasura-style automatic API generation easier. Currently it requires too much setup and moving parts.
ampdepolymerase··on Justice at Spotify
Almost every major internet content industry is winner takes all. That is just the nature of power law distributions. Ask your average social media influencer how much they make. Also your average YouTuber/Twitch streamer. It is not unique to the music industry, just that the music industry is older and has more inefficiencies in the form of middle man that don't contribute much in value production but still takes a large cut.
ampdepolymerase··on A hacker got all my texts for $16
Until you get deplatformed. Tech-first MVNOs don't always have the same consumer rights and anti trust requirements as those regulated by the FCC.
ampdepolymerase··on Germany pauses AstraZeneca vaccinations as a 'precaution'
Exhibit A, the FDA when it comes to new drug approvals.
ampdepolymerase··on CPLDs, and the importance of knowing when to quit. (2012)
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Even now many programming language ranking boards are still fooled into believing that "Arduino" is a separate language and not just C/C++ with header and Make files hidden behind a pretty IDE.
ampdepolymerase··on Why we’re removing comments on most of Inquirer.com
To give the illusion of healthy discourse. GPT2 is excellent for this. See subreddit simulator.
ampdepolymerase··on CPLDs, and the importance of knowing when to quit. (2012)
Most people don't realize how revolutionary Arduino and Raspberry Pi were in bridging the gap from BASIC PICs to modern day microcontrollers and low cost single board computers. Their efforts forced manufacturers across the world to design for both layman and professionals, without which we would all still be using IDEs costing several hundred dollars. Even FPGAs now are slowly embracing open source and user friendly UIs.
ampdepolymerase··on Stripe valuation soars to $95B after latest fundraising
Shopify already has a first party processor, but they are not available to non-shopify customers.
ampdepolymerase··on What Ended Indie
Tiny Seed seems to be doing quite well. What's the difference?
ampdepolymerase··on Memory transferred between snails, challenging standard theory (2018)
If depends if there is a physiological pathway between the mRNA and whatever neural structure is used for memory. This does not necessarily mean that the same effect can be replicated in mammals, a snail is several magnitudes simpler than your typical mammallia animal. It would nonetheless be quite interesting to study.

Hypothetically, if memory and experiences can be, to use a programmer term, serialized into mRNA, then that would be quite an advancement for brain computer interface technology as the mRNA can then be amplified and sequenced to extract out the information.

ampdepolymerase··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
But the semantic HTML part is absolutely not related to Tailwind. Aside from the component library, Tailwind is a CSS framework that operates (mostly) on the class property of each HTML tag. The semanticness of HTML is defined by the tag itself and additional properties like ARIA, data-*, and various other identifiers like those from the RDF schema standards. It is an issue completely orthogonal to atomic CSS.
ampdepolymerase··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
> But I can’t imagine that it’s possible to create a tool that does the reverse: converting Tailwind to semantic HTML and CSS. The only thing you could realistically convert Tailwind to is some other utility framework (e.g., Bootstrap) that locks you in with its own syntax and class names.

I don't understand what is impossible about this. A standard tree walker and a GUI tool to define the individual components will suffice. Or to make things simpler, have a command line tool that takes in the CSS selector/XPath of the desired tag/component and generate the relevant CSS. There are already browser extensions that can do this. Also, nothing is stopping you from writing semantic HTML. Vanilla Tailwind is an (almost) one-to-one bijective mapping to CSS. It does not define your HTML unless you are using prebuilt components.

ampdepolymerase··on How to Overcome the Fear of Math and Learn Math for Data Science
It all depends on what you plan to do. If you are learning data science for simple use cases then the guide in the blog post is fine. The suggested literature however is limited to undergraduate freshman level in terms of difficulty. To go beyond you will need an understanding of mathematical proofs and multivariable calculus.
ampdepolymerase··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Nothing in physics says it is impossible. The current theory in thermodynamics is that the general arrow of entropy applied to biology is decreasing internal entropy (of the cell or lifeform) at the expense of higher external entropy.

Are you prepared to bet on this?

ampdepolymerase··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
As usual, immortality is the solution.
ampdepolymerase··on Git: Malicious repositories can execute remote code while cloning
The Post-it was but a cache.
ampdepolymerase··on EU seeks to supercharge computer chip production
ARM was also for a while an Apple subsidiary. They are not a pure European story.
ampdepolymerase··on Simple and privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytic
I think the solution is to integrate it at the build tool level. A Webpack plugin. They are much harder to block without having to actively rewrite the JavaScript codepaths. The requests should also be proxied back through your own middleware to side step DNS level blocks. I can see a model where a third party analytics platform can offer support for the most popular web frameworks.
ampdepolymerase··on Please support Web Monetization if you want less ads on the web
Because you still need to depend on the monetisation providers and they are subject to the same KYC laws. If it gains traction then PayPal will magically come up with their own monetisation provider and eat the rest. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
ampdepolymerase··on Ubuntu Makes Flutter ‘Default Choice’ for Future Desktop Apps
There was literally nothing wrong with Canonical technology. They just kept cancelling projects to satisfy a vocal minority of Ubuntu users.
ampdepolymerase··on Please support Web Monetization if you want less ads on the web
Let's ask the more important questions, will this allow centralized control of information access and make deplatforming easier? Will creators and consumers in every part of the world have equal access to the monetization system?
ampdepolymerase··on Tesla has closed its forums to launch a social platform and fans are not happy
They are under AGPL. Self hosting is next to impossible.
ampdepolymerase··on Ask HN: What tangible benefits did you get from spending time on HN?
Beware using non-pharmaceutical grade ingredients. Lab grade is not the same as pharmaceutical grade. If things go wrong then the liability is on you. It may also have implications for your health insurance.

I have commented on this before, caveat emptor:

ampdepolymerase··on Tesla has closed its forums to launch a social platform and fans are not happy
Are there any Reddit clones aside from HN? Tree style threaded forum software are awfully rare.
ampdepolymerase··on Chaos Strikes Global Shipping
Where's Flexport when you need them? Weren't they supposed to disrupt this space?
ampdepolymerase··on Why is electricity so hard to understand? (1989)
To truly understand electricity you have to understand the Maxwell equations. No amount of analogies using water can change that.

(Why the downvotes? Is math truly that scary for a forum of software engineers?)
