ampdepolymerase··on Scientists grow bigger monkey brains using human genes, replicating evolution
Maybe it is time for continental and east asian arms and self defence legislation to add an exception for putting down runaway lab experiments. Standing your ground and castle doctrines are privileges unique to America.
ampdepolymerase··on The Best and Worst Microcontroller SDKs
I do wish Arduino would increase the scope of their supported features. As a platform abstraction layer, using the arduino.h C++ header provides an excellent embedded development experience and there is a large number of compatible libraries online. But the scope is very, very small and limited. For features like parallel IO however you often have to drop down to inline assembly/invoke platform sdk.
ampdepolymerase··on Why Matthew Yglesias Left Vox
The free market. Cancel culture will.
ampdepolymerase··on A GAN to generate dithers minimising frame difference for a slow movie player
If it catches on, u can imagine future CPUs having GAN optimized hardware (not just neural cores, but GANs only for video processing) just like the hardware accelerated codec decoding.
ampdepolymerase··on A GAN to generate dithers minimising frame difference for a slow movie player
Amazing work, is the network small enough to run on the player itself?
ampdepolymerase··on GFXBench: Apple M1
Grandparent doesn't understand information theory. True superresolution is impossible. ML hallucination is a guess, not actual information recovery. Recovering the information from nowhere breaks the First Law of Thermodynamics. If grandparent can do it, he/she will be immediately awarded the Shannon Award, the Turing Award, and the Nobel Prize for Physics.
ampdepolymerase··on Guido van Rossum joins Microsoft
Considering that half of all prominent functional PL researchers are hired by Microsoft Research I won't be too confident about that.
ampdepolymerase··on Carmakers want to ditch battery packs, use auto bodies for energy storage
You are right. However, they do have the car's entire superstructure to work with.
ampdepolymerase··on Carmakers want to ditch battery packs, use auto bodies for energy storage
Depends on the circuit. Most batteries' voltage are <5 volts in default configurations. You can move the voltage boost/serial circuitry segment to the engine area. It will waste a lot of material and create redundant wiring but the overall structural voltage will be low. Low voltage does not mean it would not catch fire however.
ampdepolymerase··on Bootstrap 5 Alpha 3
Bootstrap needs a design update. It looks quite dated compared to Tailwind.
ampdepolymerase··on Cell Signaling Technologies – Detailed 3D model of human cells
That is correct, the magnitudes seem to be squashed so they all are within the same magnitude. In reality the size differences are huge.
ampdepolymerase··on What Makes Sand Soft?
But you did receive a literal crash course on non-Newtonian fluids :)
ampdepolymerase··on Why Concurrency Is Hard
Managed concurrency like Node.js and Go are fundamentally different from Rust and C/C++'s minimal runtime concurrency.
ampdepolymerase··on No More Free Work from Marak: Pay Me or Fork This
For all those people in this thread praising his work, now's the time to put your money where the mouth is. If you have used his work, push your companies to sponsor/donate. Asking irrelevant questions like whether he has a job does not help the situation. The community's response to events like this is what determines the future of open source. People like to complain about copyleft vs libre licenses. But if you have benefitted much from open source software and are hesitant about contributing back financially, you are part of the problem. This is not just about Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook, Google and Fortune 500s. If you are a tech startup with revenue or funding and uses his software in your products, consider a 5 to 6 figures contract, or at the very least a significant one time donation.
ampdepolymerase··on How Much VCs Make
The thread is talking about VCs though.
ampdepolymerase··on How Much VCs Make
A hardware startup ran by people with minimal experience in shipping hardware.
ampdepolymerase··on About iSH’s pending removal from the App Store
This is the side effect when people espouse "scaling software" and "software is eating the world". Whoever scales first eats the world.
ampdepolymerase··on Show HN: GUI for Configuring Pins on a Microcontroller
Do you plan to extend the number of supported chips?
ampdepolymerase··on Go in Production – Lessons Learned
After Django, writing database code manually in Go is not fun at all.
ampdepolymerase··on Mars is not a legal vacuum
They don't need to. They just need rockets, lots and lots of them. All colonists need is to deny the incoming party the ability to make a successful landing or orbit.. Unless you want to nuke or slam an asteroid into Mars, conventional warfare simply do not work well on the timescales of space travel. Another alternative for the red team is stealth, but our current understanding of metamaterials is nowhere advanced enough for an invisibility coating in the optical spectrum that can hide a spacecraft capable of interplanetary travel. Perhaps they are sufficient for a missile that only needs to make a minimal adjustments to direction.
ampdepolymerase··on Mars is not a legal vacuum
Brush up on Factorio and arm the rockets. Our current spacecrafts are not designed to survive sustained damage (and unlike on earth, the attack vehicles have no easy way of refuel in space, so they are limited when it comes to evasive maneuvers). Attacking a planet is limited by the (current) laws of physics. Defenders are at a great advantage as long as they have a proper production line for orbital rockets.
ampdepolymerase··on Mars is not a legal vacuum
Everything will go out of the window the moment the new space race truly begins. Whoever colonises Mars first at a large enough scale (that is self sustaining) has a tremendous first mover advantage. Anything earth can send will not be able to arrive in a timely manner such that it would not be detected. Short of faster than light travel, it is close to impossible to take down a planetary adversary with current technologies (one possibility would be a gravity tractor and slamming a massive asteroid into Mars, but the second and third order effects of doing so is very very dangerous).

Agreements like the Outer Space Treaty primarily bind weak nations. If US, China, (and eventually, India) truly believe that space dominance is critical to national security, then the treaty will become similar to the nuclear weapons agreements, an exclusive club for those who has the power to do so and everybody else will be kept out under threat of war and sanctions.

Lawyers too sleep well at night because of rough men willing to do violence on their behalf, it is just sometimes they forget that the armed enforcers of international law are sovereign powers who can rewrite the very laws should they win.

ampdepolymerase··on Polyphemus silk spinning – from cocoon to yarn
I believe silkworms can be eaten too like mealworms.
ampdepolymerase··on A pure WebAssembly / JavaScript port of FFmpeg
You underestimate the amount of time needed to do video conversion client side. It is a very compute intensive process and is not feasible for videos of any significant length unless you are willing to let you computer's fan spin up to maximum for an extended period of time. There has been a dozen WebAssembly ffmpeg ports. The issue is absolutely not with the technology.
ampdepolymerase··on GitHub Source Code Leak
Don't forget the original from which gitea forked: Gogs https://gogs.io
ampdepolymerase··on DahliaOS operating system, combining the best of GNU/Linux and Fuchsia OS
Forgetting to run the formatter before git committing is not that big of a deal.
ampdepolymerase··on Scaleway launches cloud instances that cost $2.10 per month
Vultr and DigitalOcean will have more competition now. The race to the bottom is not great for their long term survival.
ampdepolymerase··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
The key is to follow up. It is not about which present you get them. No amount of Raspberry Pis or Lego MindStorms are useful if you are not willing to spend time to guide her through it. Interest and passion is only helpful if there is nothing else. Children now have iPads and countless sources of entertainment/distraction. A Raspberry Pi to a Gen Z kid is not the same as an Apple II from your childhood to you.
ampdepolymerase··on Lobe.ai – A simple tool for training machine learning models
Quote a few of the Azure products resemble Lobe :)
ampdepolymerase··on YC Startup School for future founders who aren't quite ready to start yet
Half the value is in funding, the other half the network. You have an exponential decrease in opportunities elsewhere versus San Fran (and Seattle and NYC). Forcing, or at least strongly encouraging founders to seek out incubators as the One True Way will restrict, not increase opportunities for founders. What YC is doing is dressing up VC ideology as something that is universally founder-friendly. What's good for the capital owner isn't good for the founder when the founders do not have many options to choose from in the first place. In those situations it is better for the founder to keep more of their pie to themselves versus selling out to the only player in their very local, very small pond.
