ampdepolymerase··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
If you are a decently talented software engineer and you can't match or exceed a non-specialist MD in earning power then you are doing something wrong. Especially in the current market.
ampdepolymerase··on Beginning Woodworking
My preferred stack is AutoCAD + a CNC router.
ampdepolymerase··on Machine learning won't solve natural language understanding
I look forward to when something like Siri or Google Assistant is hooked up to GPT-3. The current voice assistant ML systems are useless for anything but the most basic of tasks.
ampdepolymerase··on Why WebAssembly is innovative even outside the browser
Can you link to some of your applications?
ampdepolymerase··on Why WebAssembly is innovative even outside the browser
You still need a browser if you want to do anything GUI related.
ampdepolymerase··on The Great Master’s-Degree Swindle
Academia is not elastic, many universities have limited spots for the in-demand classes like CS. For medicine, residencies are the limiting factor. Academia in general refuses to scale and be responsive to market demands.
ampdepolymerase··on Fooling Neural Networks [pdf]
Teacher student!!
ampdepolymerase··on Growing open source from Torch to PyTorch
You are doing a good job balancing the two. For Julia's Flux, they did the opposite and it has severe performance problems compared to PyTorch despite being more usable and easier to install.

Installing PyTorch with Poetry is next to impossible. Flux got this right by bundling the GPU drivers. Their installation is also standardized and does not require the weird pip -f flag for CPU only installations.

ampdepolymerase··on The STEM Crisis Is a Myth (2013)
Create value, capture value. Hardware is hard.
ampdepolymerase··on Why don't tech companies pay their engineers to stay?
For finance, the primary goal is to prevent corruption, the intent is not quite the same as tech.

Modern ads focus on pathos and ethos. They want you to identify with a tribe/idea, they want you to feel something so you will be compelled to buy it. Look at some movie theatre car ads. They are all about "freedom" or "power" or "control".

For tech companies, Google product ads are always about a "smart and quirky" way of life, Apple is about privacy/connectivity/whatever the trend of day is. For Microsoft, it is productivity. For Facebook, bringing people together and empowerment.

Most of it is bull**** but it works much better than a raw summary of specifications.

ampdepolymerase··on Microsoft went from door to door to take malware-infected routers offline
I hope this doesn't get normalized. Otherwise we might start seeing more malware planted by fake door to door telecom maintenance people. With business models like those of MLM, many innocent people would be harmed/unknowingly recruited.
ampdepolymerase··on The FPGA Designer Who Didn't Get the Job
All these problems will solve themselves if the companies raise their compensation. You see this in the ML industry all the time. Many non-tech companies and even small to medium sized tech companies expect their data scientists to be fullstack engineers. And yet refuse to offer a similar level of compensation. Then they wonder why all the top talent flock to unicorn and FAANG type corporations.
ampdepolymerase··on The FPGA Designer Who Didn't Get the Job
> The problem is that EE/FPGA jobs have to compete with FAANGs.

Too bad. That is the free market. The market is not obligated to provide companies with labour, just like companies are not obligated to provide people with jobs.

ampdepolymerase··on The FPGA Designer Who Didn't Get the Job
This is a classic supply and demand problem. EE and FPGA jobs don't pay well. You can see the same thing happen in entry-level ML. Applicants want to design models, not spend their days cleaning data. If you pay well enough you will get good candidates who will be willing to put up with mindnumbing jobs. The Zip CPU author sounds like those software "artisans" who regularly get posted on HN. There is plenty of room for pontificating and navel gazing after you receive a nice FAANG-level pay check.

Maybe he should ask his client how much they are offering first before complaining about the South Asian labour supply. Post the total compensation offered at the start of the blog post. I am sure there are plenty of talent from IIT who will be more than qualified if his client is willing to pay well. Ask his clients to price match the hire's salary with his own Gisselquist Technology per-hour consulting fees.

Time for Manning's to release a Natural Selection in Action series.
ampdepolymerase··on Kubernetes is our generation's Multics
Yes and no, for a private pilot license you are taught through intuition and diagrams. No Navier Stokes, no Lattice Boltzmann, no CFD. The FAA does not require you to be able to solve boundary condition physics problems to fly an aircraft.
ampdepolymerase··on Julia's multiple dispatch explained with Pokemons
Pokémon, you left out the accent aigu.
ampdepolymerase··on We don’t use Kubernetes
They are not in a line of business where they might be deplatformed, shut down, or that AWS exists as a major liability. They also do not require any form of multi cloud redundancy that is not already being served by AWS.
ampdepolymerase··on Julia Computing raises $24M Series A
Those two niches don't pay. They are effectively useless outside of the occasional evangelism on HN.
ampdepolymerase··on Fat Dactyls
Try some of the DSLs for quantum computers. You basically want all of your operators to be commutative.
ampdepolymerase··on How to unlearn a disease
You should not jump to conclusions, the author literally won a prize for that specific research proposal.

You forgot the tablet, arguably the biggest change aside from mobile.
ampdepolymerase··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
They can keep it hot in memory similar to serverless. If everyone uses the same base copy of Windows, then they can easily fork from one parent copy. A copy on write network filesystem + some Windows Registry and Explorer tricks can take care of the remaining 20%.
ampdepolymerase··on Facebook's Engineers Spied on Women
This is table stakes for any mass surveillance and data collection system. The same thing happened with big government agencies if you see the Snowden leaks. I am not sure what is the reason for this delayed outrage aside from the article being a hit piece.

Ultimately, personal data willingly given is just not as valued and protected as financial data.

ampdepolymerase··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
And the Congress mandated monopoly on residency positions and building new hospitals. We would have a lot more advances in medical science if MD positions were not gate kept by the artificially limited residency positions.
ampdepolymerase··on Biden launches action on "Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag" – can it be real?
How about Big Telecom and Big Fintech and Banking? Or is it simply because the rest did not pay enough to the lobbyists?
