aninteger··on Tell HN: I can't buy a PS4 because of my email
Retail stores should still be an option.
aninteger··on Twenty years of C# with Anders Hejlsberg [audio]
Yes, of course this is true but the tooling ecosystem still hasn't made great strides over to Linux. Rider does exist but is not open source. As far as I know the debugger is not open source as well.
aninteger··on Rustenstein 3D: Game programming like it's 1992
Bonus points for using the same tooling and languages from then too. 6502 assembly, then a bit of 16 bit x86 assembly, and finally some C with Borland's 1992 tooling.
aninteger··on Ask HN: What do you do with your older hardware?
1. The same thing we do with Raspberry Pi's

2. Retro gaming / retro development, which given the age of something often means C or C++.

3. If things are really broken, e-waste is probably the only option.

aninteger··on The SQLite Amalgamation
An alternative view of this amalgamation: https://sabotage-linux.github.io/blog/1/
aninteger··on Space-shooter.c: cross-platform, top-down 2D space shooter written in C
Does Mac not ship with X11 anymore?
aninteger··on Update on Omicron
Yes, but media outlets that go "hysterical" are the ones that get the most views and get talked about most. Nothing we can do about that in a free society, it's just human nature.
aninteger··on VMware mouse driver for Windows 3.x
Non-support does not necessarily imply non-working. Anyway, QEMU still work just fine.
aninteger··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
But ".NET core" is "dead". The latest is .NET 5 or even .NET 6 (bleeding edge).
aninteger··on Scrape like the big boys
Wait, why wouldn't you have rate limiting on your API? Providers like Cloudflare offer this although I guess you could roll your own too since our industry loves to reinvent the wheel.
aninteger··on An unexpected victory: container stacking at the port of Los Angeles
Wow. There's just no straight talk anymore... Why does everyone have to dance around the issue. Just say the facts and this article could have been quite a bit shorter.
aninteger··on How big tech runs tech projects and the curious absence of Scrum
Well, hopefully that is not the norm, but it's not like you are limited to a single branch (fork) at a time.
aninteger··on Maintain It with Zig
Aren't C projects relatively easy to build? C++ is a little more complicated, so there is more of a push for header only libraries there. I see the problem is probably with external libraries, but that is largely not a huge problem on Linux/Unix. Windows was more of a pain but msys/mingw alleviated most of it.
aninteger··on It's not a labor shortage – it's a wage and workers rights shortage
Federal will end on Monday, Sept 6th, but certain states may have longer term benefits.
aninteger··on Working towards a source-based bootstrapping path to a GNU+Linux system
Super interesting, but I wonder if there is a historical accurate account of bootstrapping that is well documented. This jumps into ELF pretty quickly but there were older formats like a.out and OMAGIC? before ELF. Is there good documentation on the bootstrapping of x86 BSD or Minix since they are even older than Linux.
aninteger··on Operating Systems: Timeline and Family Tree
True, but the same statement could be made about most software (including perhaps 95% of apps on Android and iOS app stores). Perhaps mobile apps provide some form of return on investment through mobile advertising, although it's probably not much.

Anyway, there are people that are perfectly willing to toil away on their labor of love because it's a hobby for them and they get some form of satisfaction from it all.

aninteger··on Apple is now an antifragile company
Take public transportation sometime. Notice all the devices with cracked screens. Totally "anti-fragile" :). Android devices are no better, but the article is talking about Apple.
aninteger··on Apple is now an antifragile company
Their devices are still fragile though.
aninteger··on Why does NBC make it so difficult to watch the Olympics?
It's especially difficult to watch without paying. Over the air (or locast) is about the only option but that only provides highlights or coverage of shorter events. No broadcasting of football.

There was supposed to be a free tier on Peacock but everything I've seen, outside of 2-4 minute clips, requires Peacock Premium.

aninteger··on C++ Dev Ecosystem 2021

aninteger··on Looking Glass: Run a Windows VM on Linux in a window with native performance
Even more amazing on the old interface:

aninteger··on .NET 6 Preview 5
The only problem with .NET is that the best tooling is quite expensive. Visual Studio with ReSharper or JetBrains Rider are both up there in price and MonoDevelop didn't work with .net core last I tried (2 years ago). That kind of leaves you with VSCode or a plain old editor (vim/emacs), but you really don't want to write C# code in a basic editor.
aninteger··on Doom Running on an IKEA Lamp [video]
"Of course it runs Doom"

Nice work!

aninteger··on Ftxui: C++ Functional Terminal User Interface
What scenario are you talking about, or what does VS Code have to do with anything?

Did you mean running VS Code on a remote server and forwarding it to the local machine? X11 based forwarding?

aninteger··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
Clickbait yes, but it's more than that. It's a momentum/filler piece. NPR's Marketplace ran a short segment on this last week (although I can't find the link), now Bloomberg, coming up MSNBC and CNN(?).
aninteger··on I still like C and strongly dislike C++
They didn't fix all the warts, D's compile times are just as bad or maybe even worse [0][1].

aninteger··on Most and Least Affordable Places to Buy a Home
Flint's water was contaminated and only just recently cleaned up: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flint_water_crisis
aninteger··on Scala projects are difficult to maintain
In reality it's not really like that. Yes different shops are going to be using different C++ features in different ways but they usually share some common "core" of the language.
aninteger··on Total Cookie Protection
Cisco Webex is a repeat offender. The experience is much better in Chromium. If I am using Firefox I have to dial in to a meeting using my phone instead of being able to use my USB headset.
aninteger··on WhatsApp loses millions of users after terms update
They have 2 billion users though, so I doubt they care if they lose a couple percentage.
