array_key_first··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
Everybody and their mom loves to believe they're the hot young stuff on the block.

Even with a company like, say, Meta, they have more freedom to make mistakes than 100% of enterprise companies. Nobody cares too much if Facebook goes down or is slow or something.

But if you're selling to another business, they're gonna have your ass for breakfast for even the tiniest mistakes. As they should, they're paying you a lot of money!

array_key_first··on Making Firefox's right-click not suck with about:config
Modern software UX is gaslight central. I think people are scared that if users read something they'll get confused or frustrated, so they just default to... nothing? Even error messages are dying. Half the time shit doesn't work and there's no indication. Maybe a loading spinner just disappears and that's supposed to be your clue to try again.
array_key_first··on An interactive map of Flock Cams
That's literally exactly what civil disobedience is.
array_key_first··on An interactive map of Flock Cams
These cameras aren't even enforcement, just surveillance.

I think we all know even with the best technology in the world the police aren't gonna get off their lazy asses if your car gets stolen. This is just a way to burn money.

array_key_first··on An interactive map of Flock Cams
A more generous term is civil disobedience. I think the argument is the original theft was using tax payers dollars on fancy tracking devices in the first place.
array_key_first··on Better JIT for Postgres
DB queries do get pre compiled and cached if you use prepared statements. This is why you should always use prepared statements if you can.
array_key_first··on Claude is an Electron App because we've lost native
Qt is straight up much faster than Tauri, and Qt at least looks native-ish, whereas React is the wild wild West.
array_key_first··on Don't become an engineering manager
There's a lot of cogs at big companies, but the impact of the entire company is huge. Startups usually have small impact. Usually at these big companies there's quite a few atlases holding the entire world up.
array_key_first··on AI-generated art can’t be copyrighted after Supreme Court declines review
Sure, but at at least it's created by humans.

I have an allegiance to humans. I have no allegiance to a computer program. That would be pathetic.

array_key_first··on AI-generated art can’t be copyrighted after Supreme Court declines review
> a prompt can be a masterpiece.

Then copywrite the prompt, that's always been allowed. Should be just as good if that's the true masterpiece.

Or, as I think we all know, it's not. It's merely a commission, the product is the output. Not the prompt.

array_key_first··on iPhone 17e
Sure, but new computers are 100,000x more capable and 1/10th the cost. If we look back far enough, it's 1/100th the cost. We could do better.
array_key_first··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
I'll check out ydotool. I did a bunch of bullshit with shortcuts, too. I had one that would change my screen from grayscale to color when I opened the photos app. Of course it only worked, like, 80% of the time so that was great.

I have a pixel 9a with Graphene right now and I'm very happy with it. Great hardware, great price, great software. The one blindspot is messaging, which is a big problem in the US. RCS doesn't work on Graphene, and SMS is basically the worst thing ever, so I use Signal as much as I can. I'm hoping one of these days RCS becomes an actual open standard with competing implementations but... I won't hold my breath.

array_key_first··on iPhone 17e
It's not feigned ignorance, it's disbelief that people are comfortable working in such an inefficient and frankly unpleasant way.

Can I file my taxes on my phone? Probably. But I could also set myself on fire, and I think that might be more fun. Why would I not want to use a tool that is 100x faster and 1000x easier to use for any task more complex than writing a sentence?

I'm a developer. I've heard of developers SSH'ing from their phone and developing that way. It's impressive, in the same way removing all your fingernails is impressive.

array_key_first··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
You're right, it's much worse and we should be doing everything we can to turn it around.

I propose we just assume people with meta glasses are recording others in public and we call them creeps. Shaming works, we should use it more.

array_key_first··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
Not to mention the input methods just suck major ass. They're extremely slow, error prone, and annoying. Hands are better.

And that's why I don't talk to Siri to drive my car.

array_key_first··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
Is it that they're privacy obsessed, or rather that most people have a passion for self destruction and exhibition?

If you think about it, the "dork" position was the one that was most normal, it's the status-quo. The people wanting to record in lockerooms and what not is not the status-quo. They win because most people are short-sighted, or even secretly love hurting themselves.

array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
I didn't say this company is good and the ones before were idiots - they're all idiots.

I also never said anything about only understanding code. I explicitly mentioned politics. But understanding your particular companies politics isn't necessarily helpful, probably because the politics are shit. So, if you go from one toxic company to another company, you might make it more toxic.

array_key_first··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
I switched from iPhone to Android and I was fully expecting a world of pain but I was (am?) pleasantly surprised.

The back button thing is real. When I have to use someone else's iPhone I immediately feel the lack of consistency.

And KDE Connect is fantastic to use. So many things on iPhones are just annoying for no reason. I don't want to buy a 1000 dollar computer to look at my photos, come on now.

array_key_first··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
There are actually wrong answers. We, intuitively, like to think in tradeoffs. No free lunch and all. So more open phones must be harder to use, they must be X Y and Z. But theyre not necessarily.
array_key_first··on Motorola announces a partnership with GrapheneOS
Android phones do phone things. They work perfectly fine - in many ways better than iPhones, and in others not as well.
array_key_first··on Child-free 'Disney adults' are transforming the company's theme parks (2023)
In my opinion, just by virtue of living in the developed world you're not going to be producing more than you consume. That's how the core works, it siphons from the periphery.
array_key_first··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
That's not the situation and you know it. Why are you playing stupid? The negotiation isn't work with us or don't - you know what supply chain risk means.
array_key_first··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
Saying something is hysteria is also not an argument. Again, it's just intellectually lazy. Just because you refuse to take problems seriously doesn't mean they cease to exist, it just means you lack critical thinking.

And, as for eating and killing children, it's easy: starvation. If you're hungry enough you'll eat children. All it takes is a supply chain disruption, much more likely than nuclear war even.

So why not eat the children now? It's gonna happen anyway.

It's true that I am jumping the gun here. We don't need an apocalypse for AI to suck ass. It sucks ass right now and is causing massive problems. We should probably focus on that.

array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
It's a different degree sure, but it's a big enough leap I consider it a different thing. It's similar to paying someone to do your homework or write your essays. Your critical thinking approaches zero, which is really bad for education.
array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
A junior, they have no baggage. Most software is unbelievably bad - almost all those seniors are come from products and companies that are horribly mismanaged, just in different ways. Or, maybe, the same way.
array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
We have no frame of reference if it's working because basically everyone is doing it. And business only measure on extremely short timelines. Meaning, it could be good right now, and catastrophic on the 10+ year timeline.

I definitely think this is the case. Almost all software is unbelievably bad. Almost all software gets worse the longer it exists. And almost all software does not meet its business purpose - it's merely contorted by the customers to just barely meet their needs.

array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
The main problem with having only seniors is that seniors have many many blindspots. Just by the nature of being there a while, they've built up hundreds of automatic processes that allow them to ignore or work around bad things at the company. In terms of code, tech, relationships, product vision, etc. It's the same reason why telling engineers to QA their own shit is a recipe for disaster. You need fresh perspective.
array_key_first··on AI is making junior devs useless
All these tools only replace mechanical aspects, not thinking ones. AI is truly unique and unprecedented in that way.

A spellchecker is purely mechanical, it just helps you spell your essay right. But it won't make your essay good, or help you write the right essay.

array_key_first··on Why XML tags are so fundamental to Claude
XML is perfectly fine. What are these alternatives?

YAML is just bad. JSON is harder to read for deeply nested structures. TOML and the like don't have enough features.

array_key_first··on I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a supply-chain risk
> No, it's not. Skynet was a recursively self improving ASI. You are conflating an autokill bot and, apparently, an ASI that can embody and replicate itself.

It never said it was any of that. The point of terminator is that decisioning around war was taken out of the hands of humans, and then nobody could control it.

You people really don't get it do you? Skynet doesn't need to be evil, or conscious, or self improving. It can be good, very good. But when WE don't control it, we don't know the consequences of what we created. Nobody saw AI psychosis coming but we created it, by making the models good. By making the models listen to you and agree with you.

For fucks sake, you could make an automated system that just signs postcards and, if you give it enough access, it could wipe out the human race. Not because it's evil, it might not even have an understanding of evil, but because we don't control it, and it will meet it's own goals without concerns for us because it's not human.

> autokill bots are coming. Whether any of us like it or not.

Inevitability is not an argument, and I won't humor it. It's cognitively lazy and dishonest. With this reasoning you can justify ANYTHING. Rape, murder, nuclear warfare, killing and eating children. This reasoning is bad and stupid and nobody should do it anymore.
