array_key_first··on Everything in C is undefined behavior
Yes but casting pointers is virtually required in any non-trivial C program, and frankly even a lot of the trivial ones, because there's no other way to do type erasure or generics. Well, there kind of are now, and there's always been macros, but void * has historically been the predominant way this is done at runtime.

Gutting doesn't magically solve incompetence. It's a anti-solultion that people peddle because it requires literally zero thought or nuance.

If an organization has systemic incompetence and you gut them, then they're still incompetent but now they're also pressured and therefore more likely to make mistakes. So, you're just in a worse position.

array_key_first··on New York to tax luxury second homes in NYC
Taxes = theft is one of the most tired, low-brow, and intellectually lazy viewpoints ever.

We all understand the concept of commons. We all understand the concept of money pooling. Don't pretend it doesn't make sense or it's evil when most people pay for private insurance anyway or even fucking Claude Code subscription plans which follow the same concept.

Markdown can contain arbitrary HTML. It only makes sense to use an HTML viewer for what is essentially a dialect of HTML, aka a browser engine.

Yes and that's bad. Saying it's bad doesn't make it not-bad, it just makes it still bad but now we know it's bad.

You require both team players and "rockstar" individuals. It's not one or the other or a competition, because they do different things.

Yes if you put a someone who can't work on a team on a team and expect team work then that will not work. But that's obvious, so then don't do that. Expecting a homogeneous workforce isn't realistic or optimal.

Yes, being a cop is like being black, you got it exactly right. You should write a book, or something, so the whole world can hear how unbelievably fucking stupid you sound.

Im not going to even try to argue further once we've reached the "I don't see color" part of the argument. I don't think there's anything I, or anyone, could say to you to make you believe that willing participants in corrupt systems might be accountable.

But, I leave you with a thought exercise: why are these statements different?

- all mobsters are bastards - all gangsters are bastards - all Nazis are bastards - all cops are bastards

Surely you must agree with 1, or all three, of the preceding statements? Or, do you think that calling all skinheads bastards is prejudice akin to racism?

You basically didn't address anything I wrote - this is one of the most worthless comments I've written in a while.

I will reiterate. If you, or others, want to hit children then that's something you need to justify with cold hard studies. Not me. The default is not hitting people.

Acknowledge the reality: if I do these punishments to another adult man, I will:

1. Probably get my ass handed to me.

2. Go to jail and be prosecuted for assault and battery.

Given that, why then does it magically become okay to do it to kids?

The answer is it doesn't, fucking obviously. So, if you want to do that, justify it. And it better be a good justification backed by science, not some pussy-footing "reasoning" I'm sure you're going to bust out.

I think it's important to note that our understanding of whiteness has changed over time. And, during that time, there was division amongst even what we consider today as white people. Polish and Italian immigrants often faced discrimination, for example.

If you get rid of race it doesn't fix anything because the underlying cause was never race - it was, and remains, humanities perverse desire for hierarchy and prejudice.

The white people will just then find some other irrelevant bullshit to be mad at each other about and will then segment themselves more. They will literally invent new races and ethnic groups, if they have to, to distinguish themselves from others.

array_key_first··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
Having a difference of opinion can absolutely be a delusion. For example, I think you're probably not God. If you thought you were God, then we'd disagree, and you'd also be delusional.

I use that example because I have literally seen people fall into delusions of thinking they're God after talking to AI enough. That's shit is scary, for real.

array_key_first··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
This feels wrong. 8 joins is almost certainly reporting stuff, not transactional. Contrary to what some SQL-averse devs think, 300 lines of SQL is actually more maintainable than the equivalent ~1000 lines of application code. It's also much faster. And I do think that's the real conversion, because SQL is a much higher level language than currently available application languages. It's also declarative in nature, which helps maintainance.

A highly normalized DB can easily end up with 8 joins required for some function. That's really not out of the question. "Sorting out" the schema then would be... denormalization, which is a thing, but you need to know why you're doing it. And I think 8 joins isn't enough of a reason.

We often see this bizarre workflow where notes, like engineering notes, are converted to large prose using AI. And then, the large prose is converted back to short bullet points on the other end for summarization!
array_key_first··on "Not Medically Necessary": Helping America's Health Insurers Deny Coverage
Ah yes, more fragmentation. Surely that will lower the complexity and administrative burden, thereby leading to reduced costs!

The reason healthcare in the US is expensive is very simple: too many cooks in the kitchen. Private insurance simply should not exist. The undeniable reality is that the only way to achieve maximum efficiency is top-down administration.

I understand that that makes libertarians uncomfortable. But what we all have to acknowledge is what we have is not working. Other countries have worked it out. There's no reason to reinvent the wheel here.

array_key_first··on "Not Medically Necessary": Helping America's Health Insurers Deny Coverage
The reason it's going to providers is because US healthcare is extraordinarily inefficient. Providers spend too much time doing, well, everything. From admin, to medical records, to documentation. Very little of their time goes to actual, direct care and decisions around care. You can talk to a doctor about this if you want, they'll all tell you the same thing.

Even surgeons. Ask a surgeon how much time they spend in the OR. It's less than you think.

It is most definitely disputable that it destroy social cohesion. The US was cohesive after WWII, by that point we already had a LOT of non-white people. Also black Americans have been here since the start.
array_key_first··on Parents say ChatGPT got their son killed with bad advice on party drugs
Kratom is basically an opoid for those who don't know, that's why this is dangerous. It's been well known in the housewife OD scene that painkillers + benzos is a no-no, and painkillers + alcohol is also a no-no, and alcohol + benzos... well you get it.

But all three? Jesus Christ.

array_key_first··on Parents say ChatGPT got their son killed with bad advice on party drugs
Yes but if you're wondering about drug interactions you shouldn't ask AI, because there's always a risk of hallucination. You should ask your pharmacist. You can just call them, I promise they won't reject a consult.

In general, customization is a net negative. There was a time when apps just used native OS controls for everything, and it was way better. Sure branding was lost, but that's not my problem. Most apps are generic, they should act like it.
array_key_first··on Googlebook
It's also very rare on Linux. On Linux, 99% of software comes from trusted repositories. The odds of randomware existing in the Ubuntu repos is low.

It's not the wild wild West like Windows. There are structural reasons why Linux desktops are less susceptible to malware, as well as the obvious marketshare issue.

array_key_first··on Googlebook
Yes, this is true, and I myself am degoogled. Mostly, except YouTube, but I am off Gmail and stuff these days.

But, we need to pick our battles. For most people the reality is they have a Google account anyway, and they will log into and sync on any device. So, it makes no difference.

array_key_first··on Googlebook
The synchronization is opaque - more than once I checked for photos and they weren't uploaded yet. Also downloading stuff is very, very slow compared to wired transfers, and logging into Apple anything on your web browser is a huge pain in the ass.
array_key_first··on Toxicity on Social Media
Realistically this is something you need to do to some degree. I mean, you probably want to silence the "kill yourself" part of twitter and want to amplify the "please don't kill yourself" part.

Regardless, I think it's fairly clear that twitter is as manufactured as it ever was.

Getting files on and off of a phone is shockingly hard. Shockingly. It's even worse on an iPhone, if you don't have a mac. To get my photos from my iPhone to my PC, I had to first upload them to iCloud and then download them again. My phone and computer are, like, a foot away from each other but I had to send the photos across the country to some server and back just to look at them.
array_key_first··on Googlebook
ChromeOS is a very competent, fast, and easy-to-use operating system. For my family, it's basically perfect. It's virtually unbreakable and anyone can pick it up quickly.

Windows is a hot mess and frankly I wouldn't recommend it to anyone outside of gamers. For the technically competent, there's nothing to gain on Windows, and it will just get in the way. For the those less technically inclined, Windows means complexity and viruses. Also most Windows laptops suck major ass.

MacOS is better, especially if you have an iPhone. But even MacOS is a bit too complex for the less technically inclined. If you have an android phone, then a chromebook is 100% the way to go for those people. Also, chromebooks get crazy software support these days, on par with macbooks.

array_key_first··on 590k buyers paid $59M for Trump's gold phone, but not one has shipped
Getting scammed is objectively bad. If you're surrounded with people who are routinely getting scammed by Donald Trump of all people, that's bad. That doesn't mean they're bad people but... something is going on there for sure.
array_key_first··on 590k buyers paid $59M for Trump's gold phone, but not one has shipped
Yes a lot of scams basically are elaborate ways to get interest-free loans. The only way to discourage these types of scams is to require the claw-back to include high interest. Which probably feels very punitive, so we don't do it. Generally we award the damages and then that's it. But like... damages 2 years ago don't equal damages now, that's not how money works. I guess our courts don't know that.
array_key_first··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
Acknowledging reality = TDS.

While you're correct that this is a trend that has been going on for a while, the keyword is trend. Do you understand what a trend is? It's a direction. Meaning, under Trump, it has gotten worse, and that is directly related to the piss-poor policy choices of this administration.

I won't mince words here. People who think policy is completely detached from outcomes are dim, and should spend less time talking because it wastes everyone's brain space.

But it's a bit of a nasty trick because food, in particular, has inflated in price a lot the past 3 years. Some items, like sugar, are legitimately double the price they were.
