badcppdev··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
This story/thread gets my upvote because it is by far the least click-bait headline I saw in a quick scan of /new.

I will disagree with you though and say that the rocket stage separation failed to work. And this occurred a few minutes after launching.

What would your headline be?

badcppdev··on Seagate hit with $300M penalty for selling sanctioned storage to Huawei
So the US Government is banning US companies from selling to Huawei for US national security reasons. Those reasons can relate to potential threats rather than proven actions. There is no court of law and presumption of innocence until proven guilty in this process.

The Chinese government could absolutely ban Chinese companies from selling to companies closely affiliated with the US Government if they wanted to and I imagine there are some Chinese companies/products that are subject to export restrictions.

Various governments around the world are enforcing different import/export/data rules to protect their citizens.

These things are all 'fine' or at least understandable and well within the expected behaviour of sovereign nations.

badcppdev··on Qantas is bringing back Airbus A380s from the California desert
Just guessing but the amount of space available for the engines is probably the key limiting factor.

The engines on the existing A380s will be replaced multiple times during their lifetimes and certainly those replacement engines will have some efficiency improvements. But I doubt it's possible to change the efficiency significantly without changing the diameter and or length of the engines. And that seems pretty unlikely given how many things you'd have to change and how much it would cost to re-certify, etc.

badcppdev··on Qantas is bringing back Airbus A380s from the California desert
You are absolutely correct. Demand exists but is it "higher than ever"? I don't know. I don't even know what units are used to describe demand. I don't even know enough economics to be able to tell you how you measure demand. For instance I would like to buy some long haul flights but will have to delay due to being outside my budget. Is that demand?

Regarding prices obviously you can adjust for inflation and affordability changes but all statements like that have to be accepted as only being valid/pertinent for certain time periods. I think in this context only a few people are interested in a comparison to the 1920s, 1960s, etc

badcppdev··on Qantas is bringing back Airbus A380s from the California desert
You can tell demand is high because ticket prices are very high.

Airlines have opted and are opting to fly fewer planes with higher ticket prices. It's a price over volume optimisation that seems to be in fashion in many industry segments. [0]

I will note that some airlines have been affected very badly by issues with rebuilding staffing in ancillary services like luggage and airport security. That uncertainty I think leads to them being less ambitious with growth.

badcppdev··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Well you've made an assertion that the there is more than enough money but not provided evidence. My understanding is that a lot of the homeless people in SF come from elsewhere so if that's true then a straight comparison of taxation might not be valid. But this is a very very big topic so I'll just point out that actually society is not taking care of the people who need it anywhere in the US or the western world. This is a choice that people make.
badcppdev··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
What would you use if you were referring to two male 15 year olds? Two boys? Two men? Two male adolescents? Two teenage boys?
badcppdev··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
I empathise with your thoughts on this. It occurs to me that the different words aren't consistent across cultures and sometimes the word man and woman don't feel equivalent. Sadly I didn't pay attention when being taught grammar so can't explain why I think that in detail.

What do you think of the word lady? Gentlemen doesn't seem to be the male equivalent anymore.

badcppdev··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
I've never been to SF. Never met Bob and have barely any personal experience with crime at all.

And I'm fairly high on the bleeding heart liberal scale but my opinion looking at the crime stats for the US (and other western countries) is that you get the society that you are willing to pay for.

When teachers, social workers, doctors, police, justice systems and prisons cannot teach, help, cure, protect, judge, punish, and rehabilitate people who are not following the laws because there aren't enough of them and they have insufficient resources then this is what you get.

There are people out there who are unintelligent, vulnerable, mentally ill, and occasionally just sociopathic. You need a comprehensive system to try and help those people and protect the rest of society from them.

We've (across the western world) have decided to not put our tax dollars into solving these problems.

Just my 2 cents worth. RIP Mr Lee.

badcppdev··on Garmi, a robot nurse and companion for Germany’s elderly population
I have very little experience with old people.

When I grow up I want a robot who can pick me up when I fall over because the lady in the flat above me had to bang on the floor for ages at 2am before I woke up and organised help for her.

And I'd like the robot to be able to take dinner off the stove if I get distracted while I'm cooking my dinner because the nice old man in the flat a few doors down burnt his dinner and there was tons of smoke. He was fine but his dinner wasn't.

I don't know what the robot will be able to do to help with social isolation but I've got some time to figure out ideas. I don't really want my kids to take care of me when they are in their 50s and 60s. They should be able to enjoy themselves.

badcppdev··on U.S. Postal Service starts nationwide electric vehicle fleet, buying 9,250 EVs
Netherlands and Australia have different requirements for postal delivery bikes.

You should really look at the differences in delivery areas, parcel sizes, the location of the post box on a property. They are all different for different countries.

But you're absolutely correct. It looks like it can carry less than a simple cargo bike. :+1:

badcppdev··on Can We Make Bicycles Sustainable Again?
It seems like people rebuilding or repairing cars can easily find spare parts either new or second hand. Why is the situation different for bicycles?

I suppose you need the ecosystem of wrecking yards for bicycles and then you need bicycle mechanics who are willing to use spare parts which might be an issue considering that all the places I would go to get my bike fixed would rather sell me a new bike.

badcppdev··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
I might be just stanning but crypto-currency is quite different to block-chains used for digital asset tracking. It's all about the fungibility of individual crypto objects.
badcppdev··on Neal Stephenson doesn't seem keen on crypto anymore
Anyone who has read Cryptonomicon should remember that the hero protagonists went to a lot of effort to secure a large mass of gold to 'back' the currency they wanted to create.

The Baroque Trilogy is less clear as Isaac Newton mints new currency.

Does that mean that perhaps Stephenson's opinions were always that currency needs to be backed by something whether it is gold or national borders.

badcppdev··on BASF to cut 2,600 jobs as energy crisis hits German industry
Slide 13 is super interesting to me. They have been paying dividends to shareholders that have been smoothly increasing from 3.5% in 2013 up to 7.3% in 2022.

This is one of their stated targets. To increase shareholder dividends and to grow the company. Is this not just having your cake and eating it too?

badcppdev··on Show HN: While painting this, I had nothing in mind
You're probably correct but I hate making assumptions.

It's a fascinating topic in general. I really like how you have incorporated the debate/concept into your art.
