Seems fair for you to call me out. You can choose to defend the OPs words as well if you think that's what you want to do.

Can you clarify whether or not Steve Buscemi actually took the photo?
badcppdev··on Stripe considering pricing changes in June for US businesses
The search functionality in Stripe's support section is terrible and I stumbled over this page which has no content.

But I think we can assume that it won't be a price reduction and start considering alternatives in advance.

Set aside the question of marking people as good or evil.

Would you recommend that article (the one about motivation) to someone you know? Would you include a warning about the other content on the blog? Would you send it to a young person? If you were putting it on your own blog what would you write about it?

badcppdev··on Screw motivation, what you need is discipline
I'm glad you asked.

I think that there are lots of really nice people in this world some of whom write really interesting things. I think that someone who writes racist things is capable of having good opinions on other things. But why would I bother with reading them when I can see that the author is happy to publish things that I think are abhorrent. So yeah I think that's equivalent to shunning them. I just don't want to waste my time reading an article sense checking every phrase and fact like it's a PR for a critical module in the code base.

When someone tells you who they are then believe them.

badcppdev··on Screw motivation, what you need is discipline
Well I think it's always legitimate to call out racist behaviour. Just not sure of the best way to do that.
badcppdev··on Screw motivation, what you need is discipline
Thank for that clear response. There probably is an argument that different approaches work for different people. And the things you write about might help someone else decide if your advice might work for them

Woops sorry.

Is it an ad hominem attack to point out that the author is a raving racist?

Do you feel this incident from 63 years ago is relevant now?

For context it's closer to the first powered flight in 1903 than it is to the present day.

Your misquote of "a hundred years or more" as "a few hundred years" is a very careless thing to do.

You are are aware of the difference between the 1820s and 1920s I hope.

badcppdev··on Physicists observe rare resonance in molecules for the first time
Yes but likely that it's only relevant when the temperature is in in the micro kelvins and the effect of the magnetic field is not absolutely overpowered by the thermal energy in the system.

badcppdev··on Physicists observe rare resonance in molecules for the first time
I hate the phys.org summaries. They don't really seem to understand what they are talking about.

Preprint or whatever: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2208.05557.pdf

Edit:

They are observing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feshbach_resonance in NaLi gas that has been cooled down to 1.8µK.

In a nutshell when the applied magnetic field is almost precisely 334.92 Gauss the NaLi molecules couple together a lot more than normal because the magnetic field affects the energy levels of the molecules (the electrons in the molecules). When the energy levels match then certain coupled states are far more likely to happen.

Previously this has been observed between atoms but not between molecules (NaLi)

Question. What will it mean for the 2nd amendment when the police and armed forces of the world consists of semi-autonomous bullet proof robots and drones?

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

If guns that fire bullets aren't relevant to the security of a free state does it change the legal arguments?

I think you guys should probably amend the 2nd amendment already

badcppdev··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
This comment thread is fascinating as there are so many people who are obviously in totally different bubbles even though they are all commenting on the same HN item.

Please supply some context! You (We) all live in bubbles and you have to be clear about where you are coming from before you spout off your observations and thoughts.

badcppdev··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
I'm going to query the phrase "common knowledge". To mutilate Gibson I think that common knowledge is not evenly distributed.
badcppdev··on I want to lose every debate
I always thought the socratic method was where somebody (Socrates) was teaching something to a student. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that doesn't seem right for describing the JRE

But I think Louis Theroux has a not dissimilar style.

(Unless you're asking me if I'm Louis... I'm not)

badcppdev··on Becoming the first DevRel at Tailscale
I believe the use of a Waifu, link to personal blog, inclusion of personal information, etc are indicators that this post is part of the trend where people of a diverse nature[0] contribute to a business in a manner that is different to traditional ways favoured by less diverse types.

It's good to be exposed to different people in the world.

[0] I think Xe has indicated that they are a non-binary identifying member of the LGBTQ+ community who has ADHD so I think that counts as diverse. Hoping someone can tell me if the fact that Xe uses animals as avatars indicates something as well.

badcppdev··on I want to lose every debate
To follow the spirit of the original linked article I will choose to accept that a debate can be defined as a conversation where one person presents their ideas and another person listens and asks clarifying questions in a generally non-argumentative manner.

With the JRE you seem to be saying that the guest is arguing that their ideas are correct and JR is arguing the negative but only through the use of questions and occasional direct counters to the guests argument.

Seems like a debate to me although also fits the definition of an interview.

badcppdev··on I want to lose every debate
You seem to be stating that Joe Rogan's 'best debates' aren't debates so much as interviews.

I'm bothered that you describe that as a debate.

badcppdev··on Light from an ionized state of helium in a distant galaxy
Small correction to your maths but not your sentiment.

10^100 years - 10^14 years = approx. 10^100 years

In the same way that:

10^6 - 10^3 = 1,000,000 - 1000 = 999,000 which is more or less approx. 10^6

Edit: Although this is one of those relatively uncommon situations where it doesn't really matter if you're off by 100 trillion years.

badcppdev··on When Will Fusion Energy Light Our Homes?
An account named after a Fission power plant criticising Fusion power. I find that highly suspicious....

(Just joking I'm sure your account has nothing to do with Hinkley Point )

(Or does it o_O ? )

badcppdev··on When Will Fusion Energy Light Our Homes?
Important to note that the Helion approach doesn't use a Tokamak although it absolutely does benefit from increasing the size of the system.
badcppdev··on When Will Fusion Energy Light Our Homes?
That's a pretty pathetic summary of the Helion technology. The youtuber seems to have watched the Real Engineering video but not actually done any research on the other information that Helion has published in the last 12 months. A lot of the criticisms are due to Real Engineering video missing details. The youtuber is unprofessionally rude as well.
badcppdev··on Cargo airships could be big
They have a very small section on wind and don't seem to have the word storm at all.

Ships could be massive as well and far more fuel efficient if they didn't have to be engineered to weather storms.
