badcppdev··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
Sending it to 7726 prompts your service provider to identify the matching incoming message (which it has in its logs) as spam and investigate, etc.
badcppdev··on High-Earning Men Are Cutting Back on Their Working Hours
Agree 100% ... "You absolutely cannot get to the top 1% by just grinding away"

And if you are grinding away then you might not have the energy and time to create the real opportunity to help yourself.

badcppdev··on Apple’s Mac security is so good, it’s sending used M1 MacBooks to the scrap heap
Are you sure? Seems like the market for spare parts would be saturated pretty quickly and the incentive to thieves would be reduced.

Are there districts that are low on people, industry, and agriculture that get representation based purely on their size?
badcppdev··on $90k to $900k: Pay transparency laws usher in baffling pay ranges
So if a senior engineer applies successfully and gets offered a role at 150k then they will be motivated to tell people through whatever review site that the company is acting disreputably.

It would count as a red flag for the senior and negatively impact hiring.

badcppdev··on Internet Archive takes down upload of BBC’s Modi documentary
It's not compulsory. It's quite legal to not pay TV Tax and not watch TV. You can use streaming services but not the on-demand services for the TV channels.

I certainly do not miss the BBC news. I found it very bad for my stress levels.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Self-hosting in 2023: Nextcloud on Linode, or...?
I agree with it being very confusing. If you select Monthly it seems to just remove the products with pricing per ms or per hour.
badcppdev··on Show HN: Shite – little hot-reloadin' static site maker from shell
It's sad because it's not hard to pick a name for a project that isn't a swear word.
badcppdev··on Companies hiring remote software engineers anywhere in the world
Can you tell me about this product? Does it cover 1 year of employment?
badcppdev··on Companies hiring remote software engineers anywhere in the world
Can you tell me about how a hedging solution works when a nobody knows if the person will be working for the company for 2 months or 5 years? Is the salary to be renegotiated if the rate moves too much?

The FX risk cannot be magicked away.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: How do ADHD people cope on here?
My current strategy:

- Don't read all the comments - Write a quick reply if I feel I must - If I find myself googling to fact check my comments then just close all the windows.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
Just want to check. Were parties illegal at that point in your local jurisdiction?

It's a great story but as anecdata on the question of parties in general it's quite a specific scenario

badcppdev··on How restaurant workers help pay for lobbying to keep their wages low
I'm going to try and interpret what you mean.

I think what you mean is that in some US states servers in restaurants are paid a very low hourly rate from their employer but are charged tax based on an expectation that they are being paid a significant amount in tips.

So if they are receiving no tips then the tax can reduce their tax-home amount to zero.

badcppdev··on I've procrastinated working on my thesis for more than a year
Mental Note. Do not spend time writing a comment.

(Good luck OP)

badcppdev··on Mutiny erupts among WEF staff over role of ‘Mr Davos’
The World Economic Forum is just a company with a specific tax efficient corporate structure that has built a great deal of wealth for the bloke who owns it.

Pretending it's something amazingly different to Cannes Film Festival or the Golden Globes would be a mistake. It's just networks + publicity rolled up as a VIP access event.

(N.B. Didn't check if Cannes, GG, etc are privately held. Doesn't change my point)

badcppdev··on Academics and the grid. Are they studying the right things?
So perhaps the investors who lost everything in the .com boom and bust absorbed the cost of upgrading the data links even though they did it unintentionally? I've never looked at a breakdown of the .com market around that time with any sort of estimate about how much investor "wealth" was lost during the bust phase.
badcppdev··on One man’s two-decade quest to let the ‘Irish Giant’ rest in peace
Yes we are going to use our current values to guide our actions.

We will use our current values to define taste, justice, and cultural behaviour. We will try to look at the actions of the past with understanding and we will try to think what people in the future might think as a lens to consider our own current situation.

And we'll laugh at anyone who tries to argue philosophically about definitions of right and wrong.

badcppdev··on One man’s two-decade quest to let the ‘Irish Giant’ rest in peace
I would like to read a story in a few months how some security guards at the museum were bribed to allow the bones to be 'unstolen' and buried at sea. It would be the best ending to the story.
badcppdev··on German defence minister Christine Lambrecht quits after series of blunders
For me this is a perfect example of one of the drawbacks of the ministerial approach to governance.

Electing your representatives is great but then expecting those representatives to actually run the government leads to bad situations like this. Imagine if all of the C level positions in a company had to be filled from the board.

badcppdev··on ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving
I have observed subtitles with mistakes that change the meaning to the exact opposite! On a video about the supply lines of components for a particular approach to fusion. Single word change which meant the CEO was saying his company wouldn't work. Are you sure you don't want to throw the navy out with the bathwater?
badcppdev··on ChatGPT Can't Kill Anything Worth Preserving
That's an interesting set of transition that I hadn't really comprehended. People used to be entertained by live performers in their local area.

Printing, photography, radio, film, television, etc have all increased the availability and 'quality' of entertainment available at the same time as reducing the number of creators involved. (Obviously there is some debate possible around quality)

badcppdev··on Why are there so many tech layoffs, and why should we be worried?
If "Layoffs literally kill people, he said." then why are they just talking about the Tech Layoffs.

badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
Do you think we should have more doctors in the UK? You are aware of the bottlenecks preventing that from happening? Do you think that it's just a question of money?
badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
Are you talking about how NHS Scotland is run by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing based out of Holyrood? Please tell me you're not. It's not really very relevant to the discussion.

My point was that it's the government running the health service. Name and shame the person responsible.

badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
Yes you're correct. I'm not sure I can fix my definition. Would probably have to rip it up and start again.

Something involving killing patients if you don't build some leeway into the system.

badcppdev··on Fewer than 40% of New Yorkers earn a living wage
If their salaries went up 10% then they would save some of that money. Prices would rise 3%. And then when their salaries went up 3% the prices would go up 1%. And then their salaries would go up 1$ forcing the prices to go up 0.3% and then you'd reach a limit....

Well that's what I think. Do you have any proof backing up your statement that I'm wrong and "the cycle would repeat" or are you just repeating talking points from someone else?

badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
And to be clear if you have an overfunded health system then you are providing good medical treatment to your population in a timely manner. You're just spending more money doing it than you might otherwise do so.

So someone with ethics might argue that if you are in an uncertain area between over and underfunding then it will kill fewer people to err on overfunding.

badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
The NHS is just a government department run by the UK Health Minister. Always point the finger at the person holding the purse strings and the person controlling the laws and policies.

The best time to start training more doctors and nurses is ten years ago. The second best time is today.
