badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
My 2 penny opinion on this debate is people should always refer to the UK government rather than the "NHS". The NHS is just a government department run by the health minister. Saying the NHS is in trouble means you're not pointing your finger at the people responsible. (Your opinion on this is very welcome)
badcppdev··on UK: Excess deaths in 2022 among worst in 50 years
You're just being silly. The healthcare crisis in the UK is related to government mismanagement.
badcppdev··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
That's a version of the Hawaiian Pizza that might not be a subject of debate.
badcppdev··on Ask HN: Contingency plans for a lead dev no longer avail?
You should never try and hide that fact that you care. My approach would be a text message saying something along the lines of:

Hi X. Hope things are going ok. Tell us if we can do anything.

Alter for cultural differences, closeness of relationship, situations where things are not going to be ok.

You can get whatever.omg.lol if you want ....
badcppdev··on Omg.lol – A lovable web page and email address
I don't love that 100% but the general theme has potential. I can imagine choosing to go with something that's not quite as twee as omg.lol, etc

Thank you for that:

badcppdev··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
Nope not open to piracy. I'm not going to pirate a movie just because I can't afford the streaming service.
badcppdev··on Kids and music lessons: why do many promising players quit early?
I've seen that quote before but this time I'm laughing at the assumption in, "we have good taste".

I think he means that you get into creative work because you have an awareness of what you like and a desire to make more of it. But the use of the word "good" amuses me.

badcppdev··on Japan’s business owners can’t find successors – one man is giving his away
I have a friend who does that with kitchen stuff. If it doesn't survive the dishwasher then it goes in the bin
badcppdev··on How the marijuana ‘green rush’ fell apart
Serious question. Did you watch the first link? Are you ok with that?

I'm from a different country but found the first video showed behaviour that I think should be illegal.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: What are you working on this year?
What would a remote assistant help with? I personally would choose a cleaner and a chef..
badcppdev··on Ask HN: Why are some YC startups not posting salary ranges when law requires it?
If a customer rang would you pick up the phone right away?

Why not treat your potential staff as more important than any of your customers?

Which is harder to acquire? Customers or Staff?

badcppdev··on How are you doing?
Well maybe picking a random colour means it's not imposter syndrome because you really don't know how to do this ....

Just joking! Sorry couldn't resist the silly response.

I actually found the whole exercise quite nice and picking colours felt basically random to me because I don't associate my emotions with colour. But I'm a guy so I was raised to only feel angry and nothing

badcppdev··on Astronomers just confirmed the most ancient galaxies ever observed
Replying to you and defrost here.

I think the solar system moves ~48 AU around the galactic centre every year. And the Milky Way is doing ~117 AU per year. (Using google for calculations)

So maybe that combined with space based telescopes helps to make the parallax method more useful over time. Depending on vectors, etc.

badcppdev··on The Deep Weirdness of Beavers
I know it's "lithub.com" and therefore I guess focused on writing but I find it frustrating that the article could not be bothered including a picture of a Beaver that showed what they were talking about.

Although after finding a clear picture on Wikipedia I don't think they look that weird. But then again I grew up thinking that Platypi (Platypuses? Platypodes?) were normal :-D

badcppdev··on The cyanide tooth is a cold war fairy-tale (2018)
I was about to ask what possible conspiracy theory could people come up with to doubt the story of: Guilty verdict, drink liquid from small bottle, die of poison...

But then I remembered that conspiracy theorists are often inspired by a muse that other people don't have access to. So best to just shake my head and find something else to read :-)

Gee it's lucky they have the Australien government cyber experts helping harden their critical infrastructure:

badcppdev··on What is a black start of the power grid?
You're missing the bit where you use the black start source to start the other sources.

badcppdev··on Will we finally see Neuromancer on the screen?
I think parts of Diamond Age could look absolutely brilliant in a Hollywood film.

But I cannot imagine how you would include the Hackworth/Alchemist/Drummer concepts.

Damn I have to read that book again.

badcppdev··on What things did you purchase that enhanced the quality of your life in 2022?
Rather than a bonus consider bumping her hourly rate if your wife and/or you get a pay rise? We did this with a child minder a few years ago and it felt really right to share our positive financial situation with the person who was playing such an important role in our family. Although I note you're in the UK so a pay rise might not be on the cards.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
Sorry for slightly off topic response but is there a site (twitter account?) you can recommend for (unsubstantiated) gossip about what's happening inside twitter?

While I'm obviously guilty of wanting to know details about the 'car crash' I'm also curious on a professional level about the challenges and changes that are happening to the engineering teams in this extreme situation.

badcppdev··on A Reader Asks How to Avoid Working for Evil
I have been opposed to working for defence as a general principle but the Pandemic has change my view.

My logic is that humans need to be safe to a certain degree (and I admit that the perception of safety is totally subjective)

I like safety from viral disease therefore I'm a fan of vaccines and masks.

I like personal safety in my day to day environment therefore I'm a fan of a well funded society with mental healthcare and appropriately funded social services and police.

I'm personally invested in the current system of sovereign countries/states and I believe that without controlling borders you can't really have a country. So I now believe that a well funded military is sadly still necessary. Talk about getting less left wing as you get older :-/

But I still 100% agree about not working for certain companies. Short term high interest consumer loans and any type of gambling are on my black list.

badcppdev··on Europe makes shipping vessels pay for carbon emissions
Thank you. You've expressed that really clearly. I feel your explanation is definitely missing from the article.

I wish I could say that Russia made a decision that contributed as well but that's like the frog blaming the scorpion.

badcppdev··on Europe makes shipping vessels pay for carbon emissions
The article says: "But the breakneck speed at which they’re trying to transition to renewable energy led directly to this year’s natural gas fiasco."

I'm pretty sure that Russian invading Ukraine made a big difference to the natural gas situation this year. Am I missing something or is the article talking about something I don't understand?
