This is really interesting, thank you. I had never heard your highlighted point that a child won't understand despite multiple reminders. On a personal level that sounds incredibly difficult and heartbreaking to deal with.

As a HN commentator do you have ideas for how society should work with regards to this issue? Especially regarding preventing harmful situations where parents of autistic children aren't able to provide enough support.

badcppdev··on An autistic man was surfing the internet on his dad’s sofa, then the FBI arrived
Seems like someone could be on the autism scale and a psychopath.

I'm aware that the concept of a disabled person also being 'bad' in some way is not an intersection box that modern world has the tools to discuss at the moment. Outside the Overton window so to speak.

Where did the money go??

Seems like the delivery partners were:

* Digital Asset’s Daml smart contract development capability

* VMware’s DLT (blockchain) platform

Does anyone have any information about those?

Thanks for that :-) I think it's very cool that the human hearing range overlaps with the older data rates that were possible in the beginning of the electronic era.

There's an idea called 'Queer Erasure' which is all about pretending that homosexuality didn't exist in the past.

I'm not saying that's happening here because I really have no idea what was happening with this photographer but it's an interesting thing to keep in mind.

badcppdev··on An open source lawyer’s view on the copilot class action lawsuit
I like the scenario: Imagine I've hired an assistant with an eidetic memory who has read loads of books. I pay them to help me write a book and they reproduce a few paragraphs from a different book into my book.

Am I violating copyright? Yes

Imagine they change the character names in those paragraphs. Am I still violating copyright? Yes

At some point you can change enough of the text to not violate copyright. The grey area involves the courts.

It feels very simple to me so I might be missing something.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Is programming a “young person's game”?
Where are you getting those assumptions from?

The answer is no. Do a 10 minutes google and you'll find your question discussed dozens of times with hundreds or thousands of counterfactuals.

badcppdev··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
Do you feel that a vertical fridge with a 'normal' outer door and individual drawers or doors in both the fridge and freezer sections could compartmentalise the fridge and give better energy efficiency and require fewer engineering changes?

I'm inclined to think that engineering improvements to a vertical fridge is easier than the changes required for a chest fridge.

badcppdev··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
I agree 100% but I commented because I felt the article was talking and criticising the use of a vertical fridge/freezer for daily use.
badcppdev··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
So many pluses and minuses... getting themselves food versus the mess....
badcppdev··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
Do you have a chest fridge as the main or only fridge in your house? Tell us about your experience?

I feel my comment was just a response to the article text. Particularly the paragraph stating: "So - WHY mediocre food-spoiling fridges are being made? WHO makes decisions to manufacture them? Who awards them "stars" and other misleading awards? Why people continue to buy and use energy wasting and food-spoiling devices? Does anyone care about understanding anything?"

I would like all fridges to be as efficient as chest fridges but I think they are impractical for small and medium houses, elderly people, families, disabled people, short people and people who can never remember what they have in their fridge. I think they are a niche product that is only suitable for a tiny proportion of people.

PS. On a personal note my quick comment seems to have stressed you out so I'll endeavour to write clear non-gear grinding comments and you should probably get off the internet for a bit

badcppdev··on Ask HN: What Recession?
It's super complicated because part of the reason the other economies are having issues is because of the US dollar strength. Obviously the impact of a strong US dollar from inside the US is different because it makes importing cheaper and exporting harder but does affect domestic consumption.

There are hundreds(thousands) of physical supply chains that are each different and which will react differently. The financial supply chains are incomprehensibly convoluted.

In short the economies will influence each other but no one knows when or how the US will be affected.

badcppdev··on Low Energy Chest Fridge
There are major usability issues with chest fridges.

* People in wheelchairs.

* Children and shorter people.

* Cleaning is hard if there are messes or spills.

* You can't see what's in a chest fridge very easily which is a problem if there is more than one person in the household.

* Shelves are really useful when you have things that can't be stacked on top of one another

badcppdev··on 'No-one joined the dots' – grandad who exposed an NHS scandal
I'm very glad to hear that your son had a skilled positive story. Premature babies are so tiny and it's amazing that they can be born so early and then grow up absolutely healthy if they get the right care.

The use and training of specialists is only one part of the puzzle that needs to be optimised in so many different ways. And I will point out that one of the key results of this puzzle is infant mortality statistics and the US does not score very well on that metric. I don't understand 1% of the details of why but it's quite a problem. And this is in spite of the money spent on healthcare

I don't really want to be a cheerleader for the NHS or the US system in this comment because both have so many problems involving bureaucracy, money, politics, etc. And it's a pity because ultimately it's the most vulnerable in society who are affected the most.

badcppdev··on Intel and the $1.5T chip industry meltdown
They haven't actually dealt with Covid yet. Their immunisation rates are low and the vaccines they've used are not the best. It's an ongoing process where they are still flattening the curve. They aren't back to normal.

And this happened yesterday: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-delays-release-eco... . The market opinion is that the financial data is very bad so they don't want to release it. And this is quite coupled to their ongoing Covid policies.
