badcppdev··on Ask HN: Firing an employee under a month before vest?
Legal fees for early vesting might be a significant cost.
badcppdev··on For Best Results, Forget the Bonus
I agree. I wonder how many other people agree with the word "evenly"?

I think it should be proportionate though. If you work for 1 year full-time then you get 1 portion. After all that person is giving approx. 1/45th of their working life to the company. ( Pro-rata reductions for people who work part-time )

It's a pity that the people who choose the remuneration would never go for it. They might not be able to afford their new BMW if they are sharing the bonus pie with the staff who actually help customers.

badcppdev··on How to really know another person
"So often, we think we know what other people are thinking. ".

Do people really think that they know what other people are thinking?

badcppdev··on The deception of “buying” digital movies
This is a totally uninformed question. Are you sure the bad quality from the discs is the fault of the discs rather than your blu-ray reader? I'm assuming you've had good quality from the reader for other discs??
badcppdev··on UK pensions hit with margin calls as gilts and sterling slide
I just wanted to point out that your comment is quite useless as unless someone already knows what you're talking about (I don't) then it's basically devoid of any useful.
badcppdev··on 62 People own the same as half the world, reveals Oxfam Davos report (2016)
If the average person has a good life then hooray that's great. Also irrelevant.

Let's move on to the bottom of the heap. The people starving to death for numerous reasons. The 62 people at the top are probably not responsible for the hundreds of millions of humans in poverty but they sit on top of a system that has been tuned over many centuries to make rich people richer.

I have no objections to billionaires but I want the rules changed so that earning a 100 million dollars is as hard for a billionaire as it is for a millionaire or just a person starting from scratch. I'm not quite sure what the rules would be but it'd be interesting to engineer that level playing field.

badcppdev··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
I'm not sure why you're sure I have a similar reaction about scientific consensus perhaps you've just got .... faith in your feelings. Ba doom tish.

Scientific observations can be repeated. Religion teachings are, almost by definition, the exact opposite.

badcppdev··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
To me your phrase 'skin in the debate' sums up my feelings about the debate we're having here.

I feel that everyone who wrote historically had skin in the debate and as such I mentally categorise them the same way I treat almost every journalist today. Writers are motivated to choose every word carefully to convince people of their opinions. They mention or exclude people and events for various reasons.

The more polarising the subject the less I trust anyone's words, even twenty centuries later.

badcppdev··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
What do you mean you find it offensive?

Are you offended at the assertion that people doubt that Jesus existed at all? As one data point I can assure you that I personally doubt that Jesus existed at all.

Are you offended by people doubting that Jesus existed? If you are a Christian then you are a believer in one of the hundreds of religions from around the world. To be offended that someone doubts the existence of the figures in your holy book is an amazing egotistical statement. Should a follower of Zoroastrianism be offended by someone who doubts the existence of Ahura Mazda?

Are you offended by people doubting that Jesus existed because there are references to him from contemporary historical records? Well I feel that Christianity and other religions have a long record of shamelessly rewriting history and so I basically don't trust anything written down on this subject at all.

badcppdev··on A method to promote sleep in crying infants using the transport response [pdf]
More anecdotally there really seems to be a problem with many 'shoulds' involved in childhood care.

I have a good friend who was given contradictory instructions by health care professionals while they were still at the hospital with their child which developed into a situation where 'professionals' were chastising the parents for following instructions correctly.

This is a real bind for parents who don't have easy access to second opinions or are in a position where the health professionals misuse their position of authority to prevent discussion of situations.

badcppdev··on ‘Return to the office’ rhetoric needs to end
You can only code because there's an economy that has a demand for your coding.

If you cut out a load of unnecessary restaurants, subways, theatres, etc that are no longer required due to a mass exodus from the cities then I'm not convinced the economy is going to be in such great shape.

badcppdev··on ‘Return to the office’ rhetoric needs to end
Gee I miss just how much of the office day is “wasted” for me by people who walk up to your desk to say hey and how’s it going and start a conversation that lasts 45 minutes.
badcppdev··on Electricity Directly from Fusion
I wasn't really sure about some of the technical details myself including the X-rays. I think when you are talking about something with as much energy as an X-ray you would be looking at multiple effects with a cascade of electrons and photons being emitted and absorbed at different energy levels. But I think it would all be optimised for wrapping around the fusion core.

I also think comparison of efficiency is tremendously hard because if you managed to create a fusion device with direct energy conversion you might have something that is essentially solid-state with no moving parts (apart from fuel injection). That implies being smaller, having faster control of the output power levels, and less maintenance. Hard to compare but a nice dream I think.

badcppdev··on Tell HN: Sudden Chile daylight savings time rules change causes chaos
For context that's a bit over 1% of the total 447 million people who live in the EU
badcppdev··on Tell HN: Sudden Chile daylight savings time rules change causes chaos
Game time would just depend on the location (and timezone) for the stadium.
badcppdev··on Electricity Directly from Fusion
With all the news about German and Korean fusion reactors I thought people might be interested in various ideas people have had over the years about how to generate electricity from a fusion reactor without requiring steam and turbines.
badcppdev··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
I am sad for her passing. Was tuned into the news all afternoon waiting for the announcement even thought the writing was clearly on the wall and the announcement still made me tear up.

But for all the talk of duty, morals, and leadership I saw none of that in the Queen. I saw a figurehead. Shaking hands and listening but what did she contribute? Definitely not morals or direction.

People talk of her speech in 2020 during Covid in which she spoke about WW2 and how we need to stand together. And for me that just makes me feel that she could have made a huge difference in the global struggles that we are going to face coping with climate change. She could have made a real difference last year or 10 years ago. Or 40 years ago.

Her son has been more vocal about caring for the environment. Is it too much to hope that he will spend some of his influence swaying the new UK PM away from her reactionary pro-fossil fuel agenda. As the climate crisis starts to feel more and more like a existential threat is it foolish to hope for an ally.

The Queen is dead. Long live the King

badcppdev··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
The Commonwealth is not the list of countries that had QEII as their head of state. If you check the summary here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations you can read about it. That article has even been updated in the last 3 hours.
badcppdev··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
Why have you put joining inside asterisks? The simple answer is that yes countries have been joining [0]. Two new countries in 2022.

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Which startups have the most interesting pivot stories?
How well do you remember 4th July 1996? The internet was a very different place.
badcppdev··on Toyota patents plans for EV with manual transmission and clutch
Or imagine if you're blind. Trying to listen for tire noise.
badcppdev··on Ask HN: How much electricity does a WiFi router consume?
I think vaporising it totally would take multiple kilowatts.
badcppdev··on Poll: Contractors, what is your hourly rate
Ethical question? Do you think that's reasonable given tax rates of 12%, 22%, etc for salaried roles?

Is there something that makes your contract based employment significantly different to a salaried role?

badcppdev··on Ask HN: Contractors, what is your hourly rate?
Are you willing to share what your rates are?
badcppdev··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
Yes there are significant and multiple areas where private healthcare companies are being paid to 'provide' services to the NHS in a classic outsourcing process similar to what you would see in IT.

Private company charge a lot more, pay their staff a bit more to attract workers from the NHS, extend their contracts to provide more services where there are NHS staff shortages. Taxpayer money turns into company profits. I wouldn't object if it provided more efficient care but it doesn't seem to.

badcppdev··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
The British Medical Association quotes a shortage of 50,000 doctors: https://www.bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/nhs-short-of-50-000-...

There's an amazing chart here: https://www.bma.org.uk/advice-and-support/nhs-delivery-and-w... which shows the "Practising doctors per 1,000 inhabitants: England, UK and OECD EU nations". The UK is 16th out of 19.

badcppdev··on Collapse of emergency healthcare in England may be costing 500 lives every week
The UK has an ageing population. A higher percentage of older people and fewer younger people. Saying that those old people should have died earlier would be disgusting so I'm sure that's not what you meant.

So to be clear there's an increase in demand because British people are living longer. That's a good thing and should result in increased funding.

badcppdev··on The life and sketchy business practices of Crazy Eddie
I thought exactly the same thing before I remembered the article from a few month previous.

Mentions of that book still makes me laugh because my local library had purchased two copies of the sequel. "The Gripping Hand" was also released as "The Moat around Murcheson's Eye" in the UK. The library purchased one of each not realising they were the same book.

And I still wonder 30 years later about why there were two names and which one was the authors' first choice.

badcppdev··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
What would be a good response to those questions? Or would you phrase the questions slightly differently to how it's worded in the list?
badcppdev··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
Ooh a super useful function (in my experience) is the monthly mortgage repayment calculator.
