Do you require US citizenship?
baltcode··on China Has Released True Color HD Photos of the Moon
The impact ejecta rock (pyramid rock) looks like there are lines. Are those lines from erosion or sedimentation layers? I thought neither of these would happen without an atmosphere or water.
baltcode··on Crude Falls Below $30 a Barrel for the First Time in 12 Years
Shouldn't intelligent speculators drive down the price swings? If there are going to be price swings, shouldn't speculators make money by issuing futures and options, thereby decreasing the eventual swings?

baltcode··on Introducing Sense – A Next-Generation Platform for Data Science
Nice. I like it. I just replied to you too. I couldn't see any error messages when I ran a modified example with errors.
baltcode··on Search On Math
Why does this lead to math error?

\frac{\partial y}{\partial t} - \frac{{\partial}^2 y}{\partial x^2}

baltcode··on U.S. To Build Two Flagship Supercomputers for National Labs
I think in most cases supercomputers are in fact "flexible arrays of less powerful nodes". It's just that you need to change the architecture as you scale up the number nodes and type of nodes. Basically, you need fast data transfer and memory sharing between these nodes if you want to do anything but the most embarrassingly parallel problems.

How do you put in diacritics (tashkil)? Can you use a regular English keyboard and do phonetic transliteration?
baltcode··on Web-Era Trade Schools, Feeding a Need for Code
Not all engineers live in SF and make more money than they know what to do with. What are the kind of services that most engineers and coders are paying through the nose? Attorneys, financial services, therapists, etc.

Why not have more schools training these professions?

baltcode··on 40,000 suicides annually, yet America simply shrugs
I think the OP's point stands. Society and the law isn't trying to understand and reduce the deaths of so many guys.
baltcode··on Gravit – Open-source design tool
I couldn't click on the Save item in the File menu.
baltcode··on Firefox Developer Tools: Break on DOM Events, Edit as HTML, Codemirror
Sometimes I want to use XQuery in the web console for pages that don't use XQuery. Does anybody know how to dynamically include XQuery on loaded pages to use with the web console?
baltcode··on Debt ceiling: Why the Great American Ponzi scheme might just keep running
One problem with inflation is that wealthy people and corporations own a lot more assets like real estate, factories, patents, brand names, mining rights etc. while common people put their savings in fiat-denominated bank accounts and sometimes questionable debt instruments through their pension funds. So inflation is going to take a toll on a lot of middle class savings and old age survival funds for regular people.
baltcode··on French Gendarmerie: "Open source desktop lowers TCO by 40%"
The less frills and peripherals the better, I guess. Although I've usually seen most cheap desktops come with some entry level video card, so I doubt they have none at all.
baltcode··on French Gendarmerie: "Open source desktop lowers TCO by 40%"
You're right, the Wifi chipsets have proprietary driver issues. My graphics card is one of those low end ATI models that come in cheap desktops. I've heard that graphics cards can be an issue. I wonder if I could just disable the graphics card in some Ubuntu setting. I just want to run things like vi, ssh, gcc and a browser most of the time anyway.
baltcode··on HireArt (YC W12), A Job Applicant Screening Service, Gets More Affordable
I just checked out the website. So it doesn't have any jobs in programming/development/engineering?
baltcode··on French Gendarmerie: "Open source desktop lowers TCO by 40%"
What I want to know is the PC that they are using. I love to use Linux on my computers but always have a hard time making sure that the hardware is completely compatible. I hope such adoptions lead to better hardware compatibility with cheaper commodity hardware. I've had a few weird experiences:

1. Previous laptop: wifi under Linux didn't connect to certain networks, wile the same machine connected to all networks under windows.

2. Current desktop: Under Linux, it will sometimes freeze with no errors reported (usually under heavy and sustained CPU and graphics usage) but nothing of the sort happens under windows.

And these issues are really hard to figure out for non systems programmers like me.

baltcode··on Chilling legal memo from Obama DOJ justifies assassination of US citizens
Thank you for the perfect excuse for any crime. We kill out of love, while they do it out of hate.
baltcode··on Chilling legal memo from Obama DOJ justifies assassination of US citizens
And this justifies assassinations and executions without open and fair trials?

What's going on in Burma is that the military dictatorship continues after half-assed elections and they are using narrow ethnic nationalism and Islamophobia to commit ethnic cleansing and burning whole villages and towns: http://www.hrw.org/news/2013/04/22/burma-end-ethnic-cleansin...

Narrow and blind hatred from other people lets them continue doing it. The number of people killed under the guard of the "new" Burma far exceeds the toll in Nairobi and Nigeria.

baltcode··on Putin: A Plea for Caution From Russia
He is wrong in the sense that something has to be done to stop the Assad regime that has lost the confidence of a majority of Syrians from continuing to murder and torture more civilians.

baltcode··on Big Data Analysis Adds to Guest Worker Debate
It says they found a shortage of "Computer Systems Analysts". Is that another name for sysadmins and in-house support engineers? Is that the experience for people here? And do companies hire H1-B's for these positions?
baltcode··on The Forbidden Island
Not disagreeing with you at all, but they are not completely isolated. They come and go off the island and have compulsory education like the rest of the United States. So it's not like they don't know about pollution or helicopters or the like.
baltcode··on The NSA slide you haven’t seen

baltcode··on Trends that will create demand for an Unconditional Basic Income
This will be another nail in the coffin for the rights of those who are already neglected[1] in the current system : stateless people, and unpopular minorities who can be made stateless.

1. The neglected non-citizen: statelessness and liberal political theory. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17449626.2011.558...

baltcode··on Telephone companies to abandon land lines
Doesn't DSL use the same lines? There's got to be a market for that. Or is the tech not competitive with cable and wireless?

baltcode··on Data Brokers Are Now Selling Your Car's Location For $10 Online
