baltcode··on NSA-proof encryption exists. Why doesn’t anyone use it?
It's stored client-side, and as a back up on the central server, with a passphrase that is the users responsibility.
baltcode··on I Tried Hacking Bitcoin and I Failed
I have a noob question if someone can answer it. It seems to me that mining is a computationally wasteful exercise. Why don't crypto-currencies just reward the computations needed to keep and confirm transactions, which is actually an economically beneficial service?
baltcode··on Adria Richards: ‘I’m staying safe’
The right thing for Sendgrid to do was to try to appear conciliatory to the person who just lost a job. If Adria was not ready to do that, then Sendgrid had to fire her. Similarly, the Playhaven dev, had he been given a chance needed to apologize and Playhaven had to fire him if he didn't.
baltcode··on Adria Richards: ‘I’m staying safe’
This needs to stop. Going back to the origin: yes, inappropriate comments, language etc. does not belong in professional life it makes someone uncomfortable. The only way this will be changed is with understanding and civility. It was an over-reaction to fire the developer. Adria Richard's continual insistence on only addressing what she felt were inappropriate and sexist jokes and no attention that his firing had made it into something else was not helpful. I think Sendgrid and Adria should have been seen trying to mend bridges at that point. Instead, it seems everyone is continuing to behave extremely arrogantly as if they are perfect. That seems to be how PlayHaven, Sendgrid, Adria, and the trolls are behaving.
baltcode··on Write Better with Draft
Please add import and export to/from docx and latex. Also, please add export to pdf. This could be a great product.
baltcode··on Another awesome US immigration experience
I think there are problems other than inconvenience. You might have a job or property or family within the US. Being denied entry without the protection of due process where you are innocent till proven guilty can be a BIG deal.
baltcode··on Another awesome US immigration experience
I think the problem is that some (most?) people are born with a disadvantage, not that the he has some advantages. I don't see how giving anything up is going to do any good.
baltcode··on The Gift
Perhaps Paul's philosophy is perceived with some of the same adjectives by some other people. I don't want to start a religious or philosophical flame-war on HN so I will just leave it at that. I come here to get information on things that are objective and can be measured, and personally I like it that way.
baltcode··on Massive New Surveillance Program Uncovered by Wall Street Journal
This. I think this form of non-judicial "punishment" and its effects in terms of people being afraid and hence modifying their behavior can be a form of censorship and political repression that is rarely discussed.

This also has a bearing on discussions whenever someone talks about freedom of expression.

baltcode··on Exynos based quad-core developer boards, starting at $69
I see it starting at $89.
baltcode··on Jeff Hawkins Develops a Brainy Big Data Company
So he is saying that you don't need to store all the data, just its most common learnt representations. Isn't that a fancy way of saying online learning or summary statistics?
baltcode··on Amazon Announces new Data Warehousing Product
So is this the Amazon clone of Google's Spanner?
baltcode··on Skills Don’t Pay the Bills
How did you see the hellbanned post?
baltcode··on Yang Jisheng: The man who discovered 36 million dead
If you read Amartya Sen's work on the Bengali famine, it is clear that imperialist democratic countries can cause famines in their colonies.
baltcode··on HackerRank launches with 10 bot-vs-bot challenges

Your github account doesn't share enough information, please use legacy account.
What does that mean?
baltcode··on Priceline.com acquires Kayak for $1.8B
And where does ITA get it's data. I assume there must be a few competing standards, and the airlines use one of them to give their data to ITA. Why can't other companies get the data directly from the airlines?
baltcode··on Google Earnings Come Early; Shares Drop
Why do they do this? Isn't the whole point of the free market that the prices stabilize quickly without interventions?
baltcode··on Why doesn't speculation decrease volatility like HFT reduces spreads?
There are a few folks here who understand HFT and how it decreased the buy-sell spread. Why doesn't increased trading reduce volatility across time?
baltcode··on TypeScript: a language for application-scale JavaScript development
It's actually even shorter:

      names = people.map((p) -> p.name)
baltcode··on Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century
I agree. I wonder if it is possible to get hired as a data scientist as easily if you haven't worked on big data before.

Or, I guess programmers and engineers could start using the big data tools even though they are not needed. Has anyone ran Hadoop on a single (multi-core) machine for this purpose?

baltcode··on Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century
> You probably just need better buzzwords (and ideally the background to back it up) -- NoSQL, big data, MongoDB, Hadoop, etc.

Are there as many data scientists who don't work on Big Data?

baltcode··on Where Will the Jobs be in 2020? (hint: not tech)
What are these Satellite Telocom jobs, and how do you get them? Are these like VLSI design, Spread Spectrum coding, and antenna design, or is there some other layer that is supposed to be where the jobs growth is? If I search "Satellite Telecommunications" on any jobs site, it doesn't show that many jobs, and most of them seem to be defense related that require clearance.
baltcode··on "Life Expectancy" Doesn't Measure How Long You're Expected To Live
I thought OPEC was the oil producers club, and that the US isn't a member. Did I miss something?
baltcode··on "Life Expectancy" Doesn't Measure How Long You're Expected To Live
Other than the cohort and period life expectancy, what is imp. to most people should be something else:

* How many more years do you expect to live if you are already X years old in 2012?

This is obviously different than just calculating from the cohort life expectancy of 2012-X since you you've already passed the vulnerable infancy stage. Also, say you are 90 today, so your cohort exp, for 1922 births must be something like, say 80. Your expectation of living more is certainly not -10 years!

baltcode··on BitTorrent study finds most file-sharers are monitored
It says a lot of the trackers were not on the blocklists.
baltcode··on Yes, India is a police state - Christopher Soghoian
But these things are problems and need to be fixed. If you are the right kind of Indian, NRI, or foreigner you'd be fleeced of money, time, and happiness, and you'd get the hell out of the situation as soon as you can. If you are, say Muslim or some "wrong" caste/community in the wrong place, say good bye to any sense of dignity or sense of justice/faith in the system as random bureaucrats/cops or even powerful individuals harass you. These are real, important problems that need to be fixed. They won't be fixed by ignoring them.

Yesterday or so, a passenger was actually beheaded in a crowded train in W Bengal. Nobody was apprehended. In every town/village/city you will find people being harassed by babus, and victims of extortion or violence by police and/or criminals.

baltcode··on UK anti-encryption law
Yes, but the chances of proving such nebulous ideas change greatly if you can be demonized in the public eye.
baltcode··on How FBI Entrapment Is Inventing 'Terrorists'
The only problem is, the state attornies/feds don't press criminal charges on the person if they don't want to.
baltcode··on How FBI Entrapment Is Inventing 'Terrorists'
If every conversation among people of all political persuasions was exploited, you'd see a very different picture. You really think conversations among Tea Partiers, Democratic party drones, and other mainstream-type groups never bring up fantasies of violence on their supposed enemies? Or do you think there are no unstable and insecure people who could be turned among these political blocs?
baltcode··on Canada ditches the penny
This is simply patching over the underlying problem - dilution in the money supply. There is no reason why countries like the US and Canada who have only become a lot wealthier in the last 200 years should have such inflation. Stop printing money, and the penny will remain valuable!
