Surprised NSO Group hasn't already rolled over like Cambridge Analytica
barcoder··on Ask HN: How do you get yourself to sleep when you want?
Read up on how the army trains soldiers to fall asleep quickly in war zones.
barcoder··on Blue Origin legal tactics partly to blame for NASA moon landing delay
“ "We've lost nearly seven months in litigation and that likely has pushed the first human landing likely to no earlier than 2025," Nelson said, pinning the delay in NASA's return to the Moon firmly on Blue Origin and its lawyers. During the legal process, NASA was forbidden from working or even talking with SpaceX … “

Boggles the mind that Blue Origin would rather put their money into legal battles than making their space flight tech better.

barcoder··on Jony Ive’s first major design since leaving Apple
A nice and welcome surprise with a logo that looks organic. I've been designing a logo and although I eventually settled on something more plain and 2D, I experimented and thought about how logos will adapt to work well 3D in the coming years.
barcoder··on Skimpflation: A reason inflation is worse than the government says it is
The mention of the deteriorating services at Disneyland reminded me of Banky's Dismaland[1]

barcoder··on A drone company is working to airlift dogs stranded by the volcano in La Palma
"The council told Reuters helicopters cannot fly in the area due to the hot air coming from the lava and volcanic ash that can damage the rotors, so the dogs cannot be airlifted for the moment."
barcoder··on Apple Joins Blender Development Fund
A tablet makes a big difference. Doesn't need to be a Wacom though. There's plenty of very good much cheaper alternatives.

A small size is often better as less hand movement is required.

barcoder··on Apple Joins Blender Development Fund
While I totally agree with you that Blender is a joy to use I often think how would Larry "No Modes" Tesler program Blender?[1]

barcoder··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
Recently I started learning how to speed read with the help of an app that quickly flashes a few words at a time.

This type of reading has forced me to re-think how I memorize or even check that I've understood something.

My current process is to stop at the end of a chapter and re-cap what I've learnt and id necessary check by reading in normal mode.

barcoder··on Pandora Papers: is the world’s biggest leak the world’s biggest cover-up?
According to the article the ICIJ is just releasing parts of the leaked papers that do not mention the big four or people that avoid tax within US boundaries. Therefore, the big four have some kind of immunity and are the only safe place for the mega wealthy to avoid tax.
barcoder··on Moths in slow motion [video]
Super slow motion videos of tiny creatures are absolute gold for animators.

Seeing the giant flappy wings lift the moths body gave me helpful insights and really inspired me.

barcoder··on After a decade as Apple’s assistant, Siri still hasn’t figured out the job
If you have two contacts with the same name and you ask siri to call or add them to a calendar event she'll ask you which one. And won't be smart enough to understand when you say first or second.
barcoder··on [dead]
Totally agree with taking care of the body. It's damn hard, but pays dividends as you age.
barcoder··on Google destroyed our startup by terminating our Play Developer Account
"Competitors using our ad ids and publisher codes inside their policy incompliant apps and violates policy knowingly to trigger associate accounts!"

Scary. So it sounds like they were attacked by a competitor and Google is not willing to support.

barcoder··on Twitter enables tipping with Bitcoin, plans to let users authenticate NFTs
BitClout already does this although there's a lot of speculation that BitClout will fail where as Twitter has lasted for a decent amount of time.
barcoder··on Paradise lost: The rise and ruin of Couchsurfing.com
The first app I'd fire up when arriving in a new city was the CS app.

I'd announce myself in the activities section - ie. I want walk around the city. A few mins later I'd have a group of people wanting to meet up and explore.

Instant friends. It was wonderful!

barcoder··on Ask HN: Any successful transitions from a tech/IT career to working in the arts?
A good book to get you going is The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron
barcoder··on Comparing SARS-CoV-2 natural immunity to vaccine-induced immunity [pdf]
Or better still give the vaccines to countries and people that actually want them. Or is that much harder?
barcoder··on The only skin care that works? science video response (2020)
Good diet and keeping hydrated are probably more important
barcoder··on Full-body tracking in VR using AprilTag markers
It kind of looks like in the video that the person has a marker on the side as well as front, so it could potentially work. Maybe the side marker could be set to rotate the character
barcoder··on The reason processed pet foods are so addictive
Funny how I never thought about chemical additives being added to cat food. Explains perfectly why when I fed a cat home made chicken gravy it turned its nose up at it and waited for the gravy to be poured from the cat food packet
barcoder··on Aspartame and cancer – new evidence for causation
Best too drink water atleast 30 minutes before or after the meal because it dilutes the stomach digestive acids
barcoder··on Todo apps are meant for robots
This comment has put Red Dwarf to the top of my reading list. I was an avid fan of the tv show and never thought to read the books.

I think we all see a bit of Rimmer in ourselves when it comes to preparing for for an exam.

barcoder··on Italian Pronunciation: A Primer for Singers (2016)
It would be nice to hear an Italian teacher read this article
barcoder··on NSA Mobile Device Best Practices
Having recently switched to iPhone I have been very surprised at finding my wifi and Bluetooth automatically turning on. There could be a better way, but I had to create a shortcut to disable connectivity until I manually turn it back on
barcoder··on Mixed Reality with Passthrough
All my friends with the quest upgraded the strap. Oculus doing a crappy upsale, just a cost you need to swallow
barcoder··on Spanish police seize large drone used to carry drugs from Morocco
This is a really good example of technology being used by criminals to circumvent law enforcement while putting the public at risk. While I personally think drug laws need to be updated, the more interesting discussion here is about creating technologies that can cause serious harm to the public and making them cheap and easy enough to be used by anyone with a small amount of financial backing and a strong insentive.
barcoder··on Adobe Joins Blender Development Fund
This is really good news. I love how well Blender and Substance play together. I'm sure we'll see tighter integrations.

I am relieved that Adobe is supporting Blender rather than making a move for their own 3D engine. Maybe that'll come down the line though.

barcoder··on Show HN: Generating Audio-Visuals from Astrophotos
Reminds me of Ryoji Ikeda's audio visual shows/installations. A show of his I saw used position data from stars in our galaxy to create a highly immersive experience that took over the body's senses. It's the closest I've come to really understanding the scale of our galaxy.

Ryoji Ikeda currently has an installation in London at 180 The Strand. I highly recommend going to a live performance when he next goes on tour.

barcoder··on Show HN: Face Maker AI. Sketch to create photorealistic faces
It looks to be similar to Nvidia Canvas - there's a good demo of that online.

Basically the user paints where they want a feature to be using a colour. The AI replaces the colour with a feature and makes sure that any features touching eachother blend together beautifully to create a believable human face.
